Chapter 4
That thing shouldn’t appear now, I thought to myself.
I didn't sleep for a night and I was very sleepy. As soon as I relaxed, I felt sleepy and fell asleep as soon as I lay down on the bed.
But it's easy to wake up during the day. I was woken up by the glaring sunlight. I looked at the clock and it was only eleven o'clock.
Mao Jianming called just then. He said he was ready and asked me how things were going. I said I was ready too, and he hung up. About five minutes later, a text message came on my phone: Meet at People's Square at 8:00 AM tomorrow.
I had nothing to do this afternoon, so I went to help out at the bakery. As soon as I entered, the baker came out from the backstage. His name was Zhou Xiang, he was in his forties and had been in the business for over a decade. He said he wanted to take a few days off and go back to his hometown.
I approved his leave and told Xiaorong that since Master Zhou was going home, she should also take two days off until he returned to open the shop. This afternoon, I asked them to take back some of the unsold bread, otherwise it would go bad if left in the shop. Before closing, I gave Xiaorong the keys to the shop and told Master Zhou and the others to keep in touch.
There were more than ten left, so I had to put them in a big plastic bag and eat them on the way to Yunnan tomorrow.
After a busy day, I am ready to go home.
When I passed by that alley, I took a special look at the electric pole. Seeing that it was pitch black and there was nothing there, my nervous heart relaxed. It seemed that I was scaring myself.
As I entered the elevator, I kept thinking back to the moment the female ghost suddenly appeared as the door closed yesterday. As the elevator door closed, I kept repeating to myself, "Don't show up, don't show up!" Even after the elevator completely closed, I still didn't see the female ghost.
I think I'm a little neurotic now.
When I got home, I put on my slippers and went to the bathroom to wash up. I took off the evil-repelling beads on my wrist and prepared to brush my teeth and wash my face.
Everything had returned to normal. I brushed my teeth, looking at myself in the mirror. Afterward, I began to wash my face. As I bent down and closed my eyes, I felt something behind me. My heartbeat quickened. I pretended nothing was happening, but secretly continued washing my face while peeking through my fingers at the mirror.
I didn't see anything in the mirror out of the corner of my eye.
But that feeling kept coming from behind me, so I had to wash my face quickly, then plucked up the courage to open my eyes and look in the mirror, but there was still nothing in it.
I hurriedly wiped my face and hands, put on the evil-repelling beads in a panic, and hid in the bedroom.
My heart is still pounding now.
I don't understand why this happened. I've lived here for four or five years and have never encountered anything like this. The more I think about it, the more scared I get. I feel like the whole house is unsafe.
If this continues, I'm going to go crazy. When I get back from Yunnan, I'm going to find a new house. I really can't live here alone.
Another sleepless night. The next day I called Mao Jianming to come over. I was in no condition to drive.
When he arrived downstairs, he honked twice. I saw he was driving a jeep. I went downstairs and went with him to the underground parking lot. Having someone to accompany me wasn't a big deal, and besides, it was broad daylight, so even ghosts wouldn't dare come out.
But that was just my idea. In the underground parking lot, Mao Jianming saw that my trunk was full of amateur tools and said, "You've prepared quite a lot, but most of them won't be used."
"I saw online that I need to bring these," I said embarrassedly.
"Our team has prepared the supplies, let's go directly."
"Wait a minute." I opened the car door and took out a big bag of bread from the back seat.
Mao Jianming saw the bread and said with a smile, "This could be useful."
I locked the car and followed Mao Jianming out of the underground garage. But out of the corner of my eye, I saw the shadow of the female ghost in red. I jumped and shuddered. Mao Jianming saw me like this and asked me, "What's wrong?"
I looked towards the corner, but there was nothing there.
"It's okay, maybe I didn't sleep well last night." I rubbed my temples. In fact, I knew it wasn't my eyes that were blurring my vision. Seeing it one after another meant that she was here.
I'm being followed by a ghost. When I come back from Yunnan, I'm going to go back to the Tianshi Mansion. I'm so scared every day, I'm going to be scared to death.
"You don't look good today. Is there something on your mind?"
I forced a smile and shook my head.
When we arrived at People's Square, his team and Zhang Song were waiting there. As soon as we got out of the car, Mao Jianming introduced us to each other. His team, excluding him, consisted of three people, all classmates: Zhang Yu, Li Bin, and Zheng Yunyun.
There were six of us, two jeeps, and we drove directly to Yunnan.
Driving from Jiangxi to Yunnan isn't a short journey, and the roads aren't easy. But the drive was a uniquely enjoyable experience. We chatted and laughed along the way, stopping to take photos of scenery we'd never seen before. Zheng Yunyun, with her quiet demeanor and photogenic nature, exuded a scholarly air.
We were very tired after driving for a whole day, so we found a place to rest nearby.
It's not bad here; it's a residential area with lots of hotels. Zheng Yunyun and I shared a room, Wang Song and Mao Jianming shared a room, and Zhang Yu and Li Bin shared a room.
As soon as she entered the room, Zheng Yunyun threw herself on the bed and wailed, "I'm so tired."
I put the things on the table and said, "It's really tiring. At this rate, it will take another four or five days to arrive."
I also stretched my waist. Riding in a car is really tiring.
After a quick wash, we lay on the bed and chatted casually. Later, the conversation turned to Mao Jianming, and Zheng Yunyun asked me, "How did you two meet?"
I was stunned by her question. Mao Jianming said we had known each other since childhood, but my earliest memory of him was that afternoon five years ago.
At that time, I had just arrived in YT City and he happened to pass by and walked into my bakery.
We were both stunned when we saw each other for the first time.
He gave me a feeling I hadn't felt in a long time. I felt very familiar with him, yet I didn't know him. It was like something buried deep in my heart suddenly breaking out of the ground.
"Little sister!" he said in surprise.
When I heard this name, I knew I definitely knew him.
"I'm sorry, I can't remember what happened in the past. Did we know each other?" My tears flowed involuntarily.
He thought I was joking and said, "Don't tease me. Have you been here all these years? Why didn't you come home? There's no news at all. I thought something happened to you!"
I looked at him blankly, having no idea what he was talking about.
He also noticed my abnormality and asked, "What's wrong with you?"
After a conversation, he finally became convinced that I had lost my memory.
I still remember how anxious he was, insisting on taking me to the hospital. But I had already visited countless hospitals, and none of them could help.
