Chapter 27 Cocktail Party

"Son, Dad has a cocktail party to attend tonight. Want to come with me?" Xu Jianguo called to ask Xu Chen's opinion. Xu Chen had turned 18 and it was time to let him experience different occasions and broaden his horizons. Xu Chen didn't mind. "Dad, I'll go with whatever you say." Xu Jianguo quickly told Xu Chen, "Okay, I'll send you the time and place after school this afternoon. I'll send my secretary to pick you up at the door when you come over." Xu Chen agreed, hung up the phone, and went to the classroom before the school bell rang.

A day passed, and Xu Chen arrived at the school gate. After checking the time and location on WeChat, he left directly and soon arrived at the hotel entrance. A young man in a suit was looking around, comparing people coming and going with photos on his phone. Upon seeing Xu Chen, he quickly walked up to him. "Xu Chen, I'm the person your father sent to pick you up." Xu Chen nodded and followed him into the elevator. In the conference hall, Xu Chen saw all sorts of people: some ostentatious individuals in expensive suits, others constantly refilling the room with desserts and drinks, and some scantily clad ladies who thought they were attracting everyone's attention. Xu Chen, however, remained calm and composed. After his father's secretary left, he picked up a glass of wine, sat down on a corner sofa, and slowly sipped it. A short while later, it seemed several important figures arrived, causing a stir in the room. Seeing Xu Jianguo, Xu Chen guessed that the focus of everyone's attention was the Party Secretary. At this moment, the host walked onto the stage. "Respected leaders and guests, good evening. Today, with joyful hearts, we solemnly celebrate the progress of the old city renovation project." "Next, please welcome Secretary Wei to speak." A moment later, the focus shifted to the stage. His speech was nothing more than gratitude to colleagues, entrepreneurs, and the city's residents for their support. Xu Chen listened, finished his drink, and was about to have another when his left hand was grabbed. Turning around, he saw Wang Li, "Lili, what are you doing here? So we really are at the same party." Wang Li pulled Xu Chen's hand. "Yes, come on, have some pastries. The pastries here are delicious. Open your mouth." Xu Chen opened his mouth wide as instructed. Then it was Xu Jianguo's turn to speak. Xu Chen looked at Xu Jianguo on the stage; he was spirited and spoke eloquently, no less impressive than the previous speaker.

After listening to their conversation, Xu Chen wanted to take Wang Li, who was full from eating pastries, for a walk to digest. Suddenly, a voice rang in his ears, "Xu Chen, you're here too?" Xu Chen looked in the direction of the voice and saw Mu Wan and her mother nearby. Xu Chen greeted them softly, but Li Li's words caused him a small problem. A man walking nearby overheard the conversation and realized that this was the boy Mu Wan's mother, Li Li, had mentioned—the boy Mu Wan liked. Seeing Xu Chen with Wang Li, he felt relieved. Mu Wan, meanwhile, was very nervous and felt quite disappointed. For some time now… Xu Chen's excellence was evident to the entire school, especially since he was always inseparable from Wang Li. This aroused the jealousy of many senior girls, but with the college entrance examination approaching, they only talked about it. It was the first time someone had actually watched the live broadcast. Mu Wan pulled Li Li's hand, wanting to leave. Li Li looked at her distressed daughter and was about to leave when Mu Wan's potential boyfriend saw her distressed appearance. He wasn't stupid; he realized that Mu Wan still had a deep affection for Xu Chen. He became a little irritated. "How come you like this playboy so much?" Even if he's changed for the better now, he still has a girlfriend. What are you so upset about? Li Rentai watched Li Li and Mu Wan leave, not noticing him at all. Frustrated, he said to Xu Chen, "Are you Xu Chen? The boy Mu Wan likes?" Xu Chen asked doubtfully, "You are? Mu Wan likes me? No way?" Xu Chen didn't want to cause trouble. Regardless of whether Mu Wan liked him or not, he had to pretend to be confused and get away with it. Having read novels frequently lately, he knew that women were the root of men's jealousy and fighting. In novels, almost half of the male protagonists' struggles were related to women.

Seeing Xu Chen's puzzled expression, Li Rentai realized he was unaware of the matter. He secretly berated himself for being nosy. He owned a small company, and his family and Mu Wan's family had been friends for decades. Especially with Mu Wan growing more and more beautiful, Li Rentai could no longer suppress his desire and paid a visit to the Mu family. He hadn't been invited to today's party, but he had shamelessly come along anyway. The Mu family's lukewarm attitude made him want to give up, but Mu Wan was just too beautiful, so he persisted, even refusing to keep any young models as mistresses. At this moment, Xu Chen glanced at Li Rentai, then noticed Wang Li clinging tightly to his arm. He patted her hand to reassure her, and led her around the venue. Mu Wan, watching from the side, kept glancing over, her heart growing sadder with each glance, yet she couldn't control her gaze. Just then, Xu Chen spotted an old acquaintance. "You are... Uncle?" Wang Yuanchao looked over, noticing his daughter being held by someone. He was about to get angry, but then looked at the young man holding his daughter's hand. "Xu Chen? Haha." He then gave Xu Chen a hug. "Come on, let's go talk. Our business here is almost finished." Xu Chen complied and followed Wang Yuanchao. Wang Li wanted to follow too, but Wang Yuanchao stopped her with a look. "You're not even married yet, and you're already afraid I'll do something to your husband. Lili, you're no longer Daddy's little darling." Wang Li blushed at his words, knowing that there was more to their conversation than what men would say. So, Xu Chen left to find his mother. He followed Wang Yuanchao to a sofa, where Wang Yuanchao handed him a glass of wine. Xu Chen took a sip, and then Wang Yuanchao slowly said, "Xu Chen, as a father, no matter how outstanding my daughter's boyfriend is, I'll still have some dissatisfaction. You understand, right?" Xu Chen nodded and said, "Uncle, I understand." Wang Yuanchao said somewhat embarrassedly, "So, I hope you won't take what happened last time to heart. You're a good boy. I also heard from Lili's mother that Lili's significant improvement in grades is related to you. This glass is for you." Xu Chen raised his glass and finished the entire glass with Wang Yuanchao. Wang Yuanchao nodded approvingly, "You have to be good to my Lili for the rest of your life, or your uncle won't forgive you." Xu Chen looked at Wang Li's figure not far away, "Don't worry. Uncle, I'm not a person who loves everyone. I'll only be good to Lili in this life."
