Chapter 30

Chapter 30

Rabbits are timid creatures.

They tend to hide themselves away year-round, dislike crowds, and speak very softly.

Therefore, we usually use heartbeats to communicate.

Wu Qi looked a little confused, but soon, around my heart rate of about 100 beats per minute, he seemed to have sorted things out.

He patted my hand and stretched his neck. "Stop fooling around."

"..."

What a load of nonsense.

I suggest chopping off his head.

However, after calming down, I also felt that what I did just now was a bit too irrational.

We first argued, then went into a cold war that lasted until winter. We finally managed to ease things up a bit, but today this farce interrupted us again.

It's somewhat abrupt no matter what.

But I'm still in a hurry.

I didn't dare to be too obvious in my eagerness, so I had to be anxious in a secretive way.

I slowly lowered my hand, my heart was still pounding, and beads of sweat began to appear on my forehead.

We sat on opposite sides, neither of us uttering a word. If we could show what was going on in our minds right now, it would be comparable to an American blockbuster competing for an Oscar.

A few wisps of thin clouds, tinged transparent by the moonlight, hung on the bare treetops through the glass window.

The clock ticked in the room, and my face was flushed. Wu Qi sat quietly to the side, seemingly trying to cross his legs, but he couldn't manage it for a long time, as if he had forgotten where his legs were.

Silence speaks louder than words.

I feel that Wu Qi and I have completely reconciled.

Okay, I'm being a bit whimsical.

But it will be soon.

Yes, I'm a little confused right now.

A dog will jump over a wall when cornered, and a rabbit will really eat meat when cornered, especially a socially awkward and introverted rabbit like me.

I stared at the ceiling and made what was perhaps the first time in my life that I had proactively invited someone out.

"Want to go see the fireworks?" I said.

After I finished speaking, my mind went blank, and I almost stopped breathing.

Fortunately, Wu Qi had just snapped out of his daze and probably thought I had called him about this. So he got up from the sofa, scratched his head, and readily agreed, "Let's go, the fireworks show... what time does it start?"

I thought for a moment: "...I forgot."

Wu Qi said speechlessly, "There are sparklers for sale at the alley ahead. Let's go buy two."

I turned to look at him. "Fairies don't use this. It's for coaxing children."

"Hmm." Wu Qi didn't refute me, his eyes almost softening. "Buy two to appease me."

"...Alright."

Wu Qi and I got dressed and went outside. Every time we breathed out, our breath mingled with the cold wind, creating an indistinct, intertwined effect.

Wu Qi asked me where the best place to watch fireworks was nearby. I didn't know, so I casually said the back mountain.

I don't actually know if the back mountain is any good or not. I only know that there are few people there, making it easy to lure clueless teenagers there.

As we emerged from the alley, I wondered if it was just my imagination, but Wu Qi seemed to be deliberately keeping some distance from me.

Although we usually walk side by side like this, occasionally brushing against each other, no one would pay any attention. But now it's different. After brushing against each other once when we first left, Wu Qi restrained himself and stiffly kept his distance from me.

I'm not in a hurry, I'm not flustered, I'll play the big shot.

The stall owner at the alley entrance was wrapped in a military overcoat, with a steaming cigarette dangling from his lips.

Having seen so many awful couples celebrating New Year's Eve, they naturally lumped us together with them. They immediately saw what we were up to and said, "We only have this many fireworks left. If you like them, take them all. I'll sell them to you cheap."

I asked, "Isn't there a fireworks show later? Wouldn't buying fireworks steal their thunder?"

The boss lit a cigarette: "You're actually thinking about other people's interests? When they're all over the place, you won't even be able to find which one is yours."

I nodded.

Do you have any recommendations?

"Look, this one has more flowers, but the flowers are a bit small," the shopkeeper flicked his cigarette ash and pointed to the one next to him, "This one has bigger flowers, but it's a bit more expensive. Which one do you want? I'll give you a discount."

I nodded again.

"Okay, get me a bundle of sparklers."

boss:"……"

Wu Qi: "..."

The boss was so angry he stood up immediately: "Are you kidding me?!"

Wu Qi quickly tugged at me from behind, "Get another one with a big flower, and the sparkler will be a free gift, how about that?"

The boss was speechless for a moment, then laughed in exasperation, "Fine, take it away, I don't want to lower myself to your level."

Well.

At our age, we might have been sworn brothers with your great-grandfather.

I'm not kidding.

Wu Qi picked up the bucket of flowers, grabbed a bunch of sparklers, and turned to the shopkeeper, saying, "Wishing you a prosperous New Year!"

Wow. The God of Wealth is saving all living beings.

I couldn't remain silent, so I said, "Then I can only wish you and your wife a long and happy life together, weathering all the storms of life together!"

The boss paused for a moment, and before he could react, I grabbed Wu Qi and ran. After we'd run some distance, I heard him shouting after us, "Hey! Say it again! Why are you being so reluctant, you little brat?!"

whee.

-

Wu Qi and I finally reached the back of the mountain.

There was indeed no one here. I climbed up the path, holding onto the stone handrail that had been worn smooth by countless hands, panting heavily.

Reaching the stone platform halfway up the mountain, I looked up and saw—

It's all about the everyday life and its vibrant colors.

We were unlucky with our timing. I couldn't help but glance at Wu Qi, and a golden firework exploded in his eyes.

Bang bang bang—

We dare to speak, but my heart is racing, wanting to know what I'm going to do, so fast...it's ridiculous.

I was afraid I wouldn't be able to breathe, so I took several deep breaths while the fireworks filled the sky.

It wasn't until the first round of fireworks faded that I felt my breathing return to normal. I kept licking my lower lip with the tip of my tongue, then pursed it up, my eyes lowered.

"Have you set off the fireworks yet?" Wu Qi asked.

"Okay." I said hesitantly, "If you put it out now, it will look so real that people will think it's high-end too."

"Just hope they see it."

Wu Qi smiled, placed the flowers on the outside to make sure they wouldn't burn any trees, picked up a fire talisman, and a wisp of flame rose from his fingertip.

Bang!

The fireworks suddenly came to life, exploding in a cacophony across the city, bright as day for a moment, before quickly turning to dust and falling away.

Wu Qi pulled me behind a large rock, seemingly afraid I'd get hit. But how could a mere mortal firework possibly hurt me? This man always goes to unnecessary trouble.

I looked down the mountain and suddenly became lost in thought.

"Wu Qi".

I suddenly exclaimed, "Let's talk."

What should we talk about?

"us."

"..."

I sensed Wu Qi's breath hitch; what was bound to happen would happen, and there was nothing he could do about it.

There's nothing I can do.

“That day, I summoned the mirror and saw you reflected in it. I saw ‘107 years’ written on it.” My voice was low, and I was actually a little unsure of myself. “You’ve loved someone for 107 years, and I didn’t even know.”

Perhaps I sounded too aggrieved, because Wu Qi subconsciously tried to explain: "I—"

“I threw a tantrum at you again that day. Then… Empress Taixi found me, took me to see the God of Medicine, and asked me why I was so depressed. I said…”

I looked up and gazed into his eyes. "I told him I was tormented by love."

I'm not angry because I was unaware of the situation.

I was angry because I learned that the person I like has someone else who likes them.

"Brother Shi prescribed me a potion, telling me it was called 'Infatuation Powder.' You know what that is, right? It's okay if you don't, I think. It's something that makes you like me like crazy."

I felt a little ashamed as I said this, and lowered my head. "...I know I'm not normal, please don't scold me."

The last firework exploded in front of us.

So all the sounds that followed were shut out down the mountain, and only bright colors adorned the sky, eventually falling on our faces.

The light flickered.

“The cold medicine I brought you that day, you took the wrong one. Actually, it was a packet of love potion. You took it and then talked nonsense.” I licked my lips. “I thought you started to hate me. I thought, I thought we could never go back to the way things were. I thought that after you found out, you would… you would stop playing with me.”

Suddenly, my first meeting with Wu Qi flashed through my mind.

He looked down at me, head held high, proud and unrestrained, "Hey, play with me."

I was much calmer than I thought.

But I was still a little shaken. I said, "But I just found out that it was a packet of truth serum... Do you think... do you think Brother Shi might have a serious illness..."

"..."

"I don't know what to say anymore. I don't think I've ever said so much before."

"But there's something I feel I have to tell you: I like you, I really like you."

"I'm not responding to you, I'm confessing my feelings to you, don't misunderstand."

I was so confused I didn't recognize myself anymore. I even felt like my true self was showing, and my shadow had grown two rabbit ears.

“I said we should make up last time, but you didn’t respond. So, can we not make up now?”

"I think."

"I'll be your lucky rabbit."

"OK?"

I...I...I...I...damn...

What the hell did I say...?

I'll slap myself twice!

Damn it! ...

Wu Qi stared at me for a long time, and I felt like I was about to ascend again.

The surrounding air was thick with a chill, tinged with ambiguity, more unreal than a dream. Then Wu Qi's eyes darkened, and he suddenly spoke, "The God of Wealth Rabbit?"

I didn't react in time, let out a soft "Ah," and didn't dare to look up.

Then Wu Qi's voice fell.

“Look at me.”

I stiffly raised my head, only to be greeted by a warm and soft touch.

Wu Qi bit my lip.
