Chapter 31

Chapter 31

I'm about to explode.

One of the happiest things when you were a child was probably when you took a liking to something but were too embarrassed to tell your family, only to find out that your family had given it to you as a gift without your knowledge.

Even I, the most divine being, cannot escape this mundane world. It feels like...

I'm invincible.

Wu Qi is the carrot I chose. He has been growing silently for 107 years, and now I have finally left my mark on him.

I'm absolutely invincible.

At that moment, I'm afraid I could kill a thousand enemies, and I wouldn't be afraid at all even if the end of the world came.

But let the end of the world come later; I want to end my kiss before that happens.

Inexperienced, trembling, stiff.

After the fireworks burned out, they exploded into a mass again.

In the midst of the struggle, I sensed something was amiss. I suddenly opened my eyes a crack and looked at Wu Qi through my wet eye sockets.

My body feels lighter.

Before I could even realize what was happening, Wu Qi pinched my rabbit ears from behind, his lips parted slightly, and his voice, almost transmitted from the surface of my skin to my brain, was tender: "Don't get distracted."

...

Neither of us is quite normal.

That's true, no deity who has been demoted is normal.

The last night of the year was so exhausting that when I opened my eyes again the next morning, for a moment I couldn't even tell if I had fallen asleep or if last night had actually happened.

It wasn't until I took out my phone, turned off the alarm that was 30 minutes away from going off, went to the bathroom, and saw the cut on my lip that I started to recall the fragments of last night, frame by frame.

Did I say anything?

I think I've said everything.

What did Wu Qi say?

He didn't seem to say a word.

I tried to recall carefully, but all I could remember was the sensation of Wu Qi biting my upper lip. His breathing was heavy and restrained, and after breaking through my lips, he even pretended to touch the corner of my lips.

I am dead.

I held my toothbrush motionless, as if observing, until the entire tube of toothpaste fell into the sink. Only then did I feel as if I had pressed the continue button and quickly moved on to the next step.

After tidying everything up, I looked at my watch and realized I was ten minutes early. So I stared at the watch face for a while, which was engraved with the image of Wu Qi kissing me under the fireworks yesterday.

The 12 o'clock position was where the fireworks exploded. I was bent over by the minute hand, and after the second hand completed a full circle, the mist we exhaled merged together.

I eventually succumbed to my obsession.

I remember thinking before that it was impossible to be unable to do anything if you liked someone, but I ended up falling for it myself. I wish I could close my eyes and spend half a day thinking about what happened in the last hour yesterday.

You can even add a bit of imagination.

...

Stop overthinking.

I'm late.

I shook my head, slipped on my shoes, and ran downstairs, as if afraid that those shameful thoughts would catch up with me.

The iron gate downstairs is very heavy. Normally, I have to push it open with both hands and one foot, or I have to smash it open.

However, just as I gathered my strength today, the door opened lightly. I had nowhere to unleash my power, so I accelerated and rushed out.

The incident happened so suddenly that before I even realized I was going to be thrown out and die, I was pulled hard and slammed into a wall of people.

I instinctively stepped back: "Excuse me..."

But instead of a proper answer, the person seemed a bit shameless and simply hummed in response.

"Repay me with your body."

I looked up abruptly and met Wu Qiping's calm gaze.

Why is he here?

My body is still stuck in our Cold War, and for a moment I feel a sense of disorientation, as if I don't know what year it is now.

Wu Qi: "What are you looking at?"

I instinctively turned around to see if anyone was in the hallway, to verify if the words were directed at me.

Wu Qi couldn't stand it anymore and turned my head back. "If you're not fully awake, go back to sleep."

"..."

It may seem like things have changed, but in reality, they don't change at all when you're with the person you're with.

I tidied my bag, and Wu Qi turned around and closed the iron gate, complaining as he spoke, "I don't know what this head is made of, it must hurt quite a bit when it bumps into someone. Look, see if you fell into the pit."

I wasn't fooled. I rolled my eyes at him. "This can leave a mark? Are you clay?"

Wu Qi: "..."

I walked ahead, following a wisp of breath, and without turning around, Wu Qi would be right there beside me.

It's easier to talk when it's dark. Now that it's bright outside, I don't know what to say, and the familiar silence returns. But this is different from the Cold War era. Back then, there were things I couldn't say, but now...

I'm afraid that if I say it out loud, it will really become something else.

As I walked to the roadside, there were more and more people and cars.

Wu Qi glanced at his phone, then put it in his pocket and looked at me again before finally looking straight ahead and asking, "Did you sleep well last night?"

I answered directly, "It smells delicious, I'm dreaming."

"That's so unfair." Wu Qi smirked. The light turned green, and we stepped onto the zebra crossing together. "I can't even close my eyes."

I said from the middle of the road, "So you waited downstairs at my house all night?"

“That was what I originally thought,” Wu Qi said, “but I still went home and took another shower, preparing to welcome…”

He paused for a moment, then said, "Preparing to welcome the new year."

We need not explain why we couldn't sleep or what we were preparing for.

We were like we were playing a game of cat and mouse, neither of us saying anything outright. It was like we were sparring, and whoever blushed first would raise the white flag.

The bright daylight was like a fig leaf.

We passed by a steamed bun shop and each ordered two steamed buns and a cup of soy milk.

After a full meal, one thinks of other things.

Before I was even full, I noticed Wu Qi biting his lip on the straw. I wasn't clean anymore.

As a person, it's one thing to deceive others, but you can't deceive yourself.

So, what are he and I now?

I'm really curious.

Last night I confessed my feelings to him, but did he understand what I meant? What did his kiss mean? Did he say yes?

Or is biting your lip and rubbing your ears some kind of trend? I don't know about it.

So what are we now?

They've made up? Are they still in an ambiguous relationship? Or... something else entirely?

I couldn't hold back at all. I had just taken a bite of the bun and hadn't even swallowed it when I blurted out the question.

"Wu Qi," I called to him.

Wu Qi nodded and responded, "Hmm?"

The steamed bun shop was unusually quiet this morning, with very few people coming and going. The proprietress wasn't out and about either. The entire street scene was covered by a layer of white snow, and the firecracker debris left on the ground looked like plum blossoms lit in the snow.

I swallowed what was in my mouth, thinking that I should at least give myself an answer. What kind of relationship is this?

I opened my mouth in a panic, "We—"

"Sister Yue?!"

...

The steamed bun in my hand almost flew out of my hand because of that sentence.

Hold.

Which blind idiot?

The clueless idiot saw the guy across from him again and said something equally tactless: "Brother Qi? Are you two having a date here on the first day of the Lunar New Year?"

I:"……"

I quit.

Jump off a building.

Go die now.

Wu Qi paused for a moment to react: "Is today New Year's Day?"

"How old are you?" asked the clueless Li Guangheng, a complete idiot who was wandering around aimlessly early in the morning. "First time celebrating New Year's Day?"

Wu Qi cursed under his breath: "This might be the first time we've ever been human..."

Li Guangheng: "What is it?"

Wu Qi: "I'm praising your handsomeness."

Li Guangheng almost bowed deeply after hearing this, "No, no, I'm so unworthy of this... Why are you two still wearing school uniforms? Aren't you so tacky?"

earth?

I glanced down at it.

well enough.

Blue and white stripes, wide-leg pants—aren't these the trends of the moment?

Where can you find this in the heavenly realm?

Everywhere you look is red; the only thing missing from the Moon God's Palace is Wu Qi, who is entirely red.

Just as I was about to retort, Li Guangheng said, "Hey, that's fine too. You two can come with me to the market to buy some cooked food or something. Maybe they can give me a discount since you're both students."

"Aren't you a student yourself?" I asked.

"I look old, and I always haggle with them, so people who know me avoid me now. Today I'm wearing a mask, and with you two by my side protecting me, I'm completely different now. Call me the Market Killer."

"..."

This must be recorded in my diary.

I've been in the human world for half a year, and I'm serving as a protector for some lousy idiot.

Anyway, Wu Qi didn't say anything, wiped his mouth and got up... Okay.

Since even the God of Wealth didn't say anything, we could only follow suit and wish them good fortune.

-

As it turns out, taking us there did have some effect.

Although they were no match for Li Guangheng's persistent persuasion, the elderly men and women buying groceries still blushed as they handed the vegetables to Wu Qi. Someone even muttered under their breath, "The young man is really handsome."

Li Guangheng returned home laden with snacks. Besides what he bought for his family, he also bought himself a large bag of snacks. He even offered to share two bags with me and Wu Qi on the way, but we both refused because it was too cold and our hands would get cold.

On the way, we listened to Li Guangheng gossip about the class. As the class monitor, he seemed to know everything, and once he started talking, he wouldn't stop. Plus, he was very outgoing and had a bit of an accent, so I couldn't help but laugh a few times.

In the blink of an eye, I realized I had forgotten something.

I looked at Wu Qi through Li Guangheng.

His smile remained composed. The wind tousled the stray hairs on his forehead, and his fair skin was reddened by the cold winter. When he smiled, his row of perfectly white teeth shone brightly.

He didn't seem to take it to heart.

I stopped looking at him, feeling a tightness in my chest, and turned my head away, exhaling a puff of white smoke.

Walking to the front street, you'll find that there are many rented shops here.

As we were chatting, we suddenly heard a "Ouch!" There was an auntie standing on a wobbly wooden stool hanging a curtain.

Looking back, the stool wasn't exactly missing a limb, but it was certainly nearing the end of its life.

"Auntie—let us help you!" Li Guangheng called out upon seeing this.

It's nothing unusual; our class's truly kind-hearted person has really made a fool of himself.

The curtains were just a short distance away from them on tiptoe, and the auntie, worried I'd get cold, specially invited me inside.

I sat by the radiator, watching two tall people standing on tiptoe outside. When I'm alone, I seize the time to let my mind wander, staring blankly at the auntie standing in the distance giving directions.

"Move a little to the left! And a little lower!"

"Okay! That's about enough!"

"Young man! Your wrist is blocking the way, turn to the side!"

Just a second ago I was thinking, if Wu Qi doesn't care, then he doesn't care. Even if we're still friends, maybe he does care but he's just keeping it to himself...

The next second, Wu Qi shouted—

"What? You were startled by the red string on my wrist?"

I:"………………"

I was then surprised to realize that he had a red thread on his hand.

Wait a minute...

Where's the red string on my wrist?!
