Chapter 45: Unexpected Entrustment from the Temple

Chapter 45: Unexpected Entrustment from the Temple

"Oh my god, there are humans!"

"Help! It's a wild human! Run! Otherwise you'll be turned into lizard sauce!"

"Are you stupid? Hit him with a fireball!"

As soon as Darien stepped forward, a fireball battle broke out.

The fire lizard couple temporarily put aside their grudges and joined other lizards in attacking him crazily with fireballs.

Darien had no choice but to reciprocate and, together with Sewell Hawkins behind him, threw frost potion bottles at them frantically.

The battle came and ended quickly. Within a few minutes, a large group of lizards were frozen by frost near their nests.

"Now we can talk quietly." Darien said with a smile.

Of course. Except for them, all the salamanders present were unable to move.

What fire lizards fear most is frost. Once their body temperature drops, they will not be able to create fireballs from their throats and can only be frozen in place.

"Can you...can you not eat us?"

A timid salamander said cautiously.

"Of course, I didn't come here to eat you. Just now one of you was fighting, and your child is in his hand." Darien said.

He had no idea that he sounded like a bully when he spoke like that, and the salamander couple didn't dare to respond for a moment.

"That's right, it's in my hand... Wait, that's not what he meant, and that's not what I meant either." Hawkins realized something was wrong halfway through his words.

"The thing is, Mr. Hawkins went to the Venetian Crater to hatch a dragon egg, but because of carelessness he accidentally left the dragon egg behind and took away a salamander egg. So now he comes to correct this mistake." In the end, it was Seville who explained the whole thing clearly.

"Yes, yes, that's right." Hawkins held the little lizard and went over to return it to the couple.

"I told you! It's definitely not my fault!" The fire lizard's wife bit her husband hard with her long, still movable neck.

"I was wrong about you..." The husband grinned but had no way to avoid it.

"What about the little dragon? We're here to take him away," said Darien.

"It's in its nest. It eats so much that it has eaten up all our food." said the fire lizard's wife.

Hawkins ran over quickly, carefully put the little fire lizard down, and rushed into the nest to dig out the dragon.

"Hopefully it's not a fire-breathing dragon, and hopefully it won't cause any damage," Darien said.

"I hope your wish will come true." Sewell said behind him.

The crow's mouth's wish doesn't sound very reliable.

Darien sighed and went to remove the magic from the frozen salamanders.

Hawkins successfully took out a little dragon from the lizard's nest. The dragon's skin looked green. No wonder the fire lizards with poor eyesight could tell that it was not their child.

There is still a big difference between red and green.

Salamanders are not color blind.

"It looks like a wind-attribute dragon." Darien said as he looked at the little dragon in Hawkins' hand.

"This little guy is still too young to feel it." Hawkins stroked the head of the little dragon in his hand.

This little dragon looked much more docile than the baby salamander. It lay on Hawkins's hand and turned over its belly lazily, looking harmless.

Darien went forward and poked it a few times, causing the dragonfly, which was lying on its belly, to open its eyes slightly.

The young dragon did not have the bad temper of other dragons. Instead, he was more lazy. He looked as if no one wanted to pay attention to him, so he turned over and continued to sleep.

"If it's this dragon, it's not impossible to bring it to the tower. I can reconsider taking you in," said Darien.

"Really? That's great!" Hawkins was delighted. "Zeffy and I now have a place to live!"

"Who is Zephy?" asked Sewell.

"That's the name I just gave it," Hawkins said.

"What a quick decision. But I think you might need a guide to dragon breeding. I have this book in my library. It costs 10 gold coins to borrow it once." Darien said.

"That's great, I need it." Hawkins nodded happily.

The ice on the surrounding fire lizards has melted, so it's time to leave and they can go back to the tower.

Hawkins led them back the way they came, walked to the foot of the mountain, and returned to the dilapidated temple.

When they got there, some local villagers were hammering away inside the temple with tools.

Darien saw that the door of the temple had been removed, and it seemed that the villagers were here to demolish the temple.

This is quite a problem. The door has been removed. How are they supposed to get back?

Drawing a door on the wall or just one door won't work; the gorse door must be connected to the door contained within the same space, which is why they can occasionally come out of the carriage.

"This temple has been abandoned for a long time, right?" Darien thought for a moment and went forward to talk to him.

The villagers looked at him who suddenly came forward with a nervous expression.

"Yes, that's right. We are going to tear it down and build a new temple. We are going to worship a new god." The oldest villager came forward to answer.

"Do you live nearby? Are there any empty rooms in the village? We may need to stay nearby tonight." Darien said.

Actually, there was no need to do that. He just wanted to know which way to go to reach the village.

"Hmm..." The older villager fell silent.

"What's wrong? Are outsiders not very welcome?" Darien asked. "Then can we go to the village to buy some food? We are running low on food."

"You... you are a magician, right? I saw you coming down from the mountain... the mountain was full of fire lizards. You, one of you can definitely help, right?" A younger boy spoke rashly.

The expression on his face was extremely anxious, as if he had encountered something terrible and urgently needed help from Darien and the others.

"Jack!" the older villager stopped him. "You shouldn't talk so much!"

"It's okay, we are indeed magicians. Are you encountering any difficulties? I can provide some help if I pay enough." Darien said with a smile.

The villagers looked at each other in confusion. Finally, the oldest villager politely invited them outside and said, "We need to discuss this further. Please wait outside for a moment."

"It's okay, we can wait a while," Darien said.

They walked out the door together.

"What's going on? I don't understand." Hawkins said to Darien in a low voice while looking into the temple.

"I don't know, I'm just looking for a door," said Darien.

"Maybe it's because I've been too relaxed recently, so the tough business has come to me on its own," said Sewell.

The smile on Darien's face faded.

The villagers in the temple discussed for a long time, and a small dispute broke out in the middle. Finally, the oldest villager came out and told them the result of the discussion.

"Something happened in our village recently," said an older villager, his expression grave. "Our livestock have all died, the village wells have been contaminated, and babies are being born with deformities... These are all ominous omens. It seems our village is cursed."

"It's also possible that it's just a lot of coincidences," Darien said. "Besides that, is there anything else going on?"

"Yes. Two young children in the village disappeared. We found their bodies on the road outside the village. The flesh was scraped off, and the remaining bones were arranged in a shape we couldn't understand. It seemed like a circle with a pattern on it." The older villager continued.

Darien frowned. Considering what he had just said, it seemed like some kind of evil formation that absorbed power. He had to go and see it to find out.

"How did you come up with the idea of rebuilding the temple?"

The villagers' appearance in the abandoned temple should have a lot to do with a series of events that happened in the village.

"There was a... a missionary. His appearance brought the village into temporary peace." The elderly villager swallowed, and when he mentioned this missionary, his body couldn't help but tremble slightly.

Darien noticed something was wrong with him.

"And then, what did the missionary do?" he continued.

“Although he brought a brief peace to the village, he was very scary… Nina saw him shed his skin at night… But fortunately, with the protection of the god Ferros, the missionaries couldn’t enter the house, so we came to the temple to worship our god, hoping that he would become stronger, powerful enough to drive away all the terrible things.” The older villager lowered his voice.

"I have a question. If this missionary is so scary, why can you go out during the day?" Darien asked.

"Because missionaries can be killed during the day..." The older villager hesitated and said it.

"So you killed him during the day? And then he came back at night," said Sewell.

"That's right." The older villager rubbed his face. "It's getting late. Let's go back quickly. We need to get inside before the sun sets, otherwise it will be too late. Let me introduce myself. My name is Hanton, and I'm the mayor of Felin Village."

"Hello, Hamilton." Darien made no attempt to introduce himself. "I'm a kind wizard passing by. These are my assistants and my friends."

Seeing that he had no intention of introducing himself, Sewell and Hawkins just smiled and nodded.

"Let's go. We'll discuss it as we go. This time, if the whole village pools their money together, we can always come up with a satisfactory reward for you," said Hamilton.

The villagers in the temple also packed up their tools and prepared to leave.

Felin Village was some distance away from here. Darien followed these villagers and walked along the way. He felt that the road ahead was extremely long, as if he would never reach the end.

Along the way, the village chief Hamilton kept talking to him. After agreeing on a reward of 10 gold coins, the village chief was very concerned about his abilities and hoped that they could completely resolve the troubles in the village.

The villagers who had relatives to rely on have already moved out, and most of the remaining people are struggling to get by.

They did not dare to leave the land where their ancestors had lived for a long time easily. The outside world was confusing. Things had not yet reached the worst point. Leaving would mean losing everything, so they were unwilling to leave easily.

When they arrived at the village, there were several young villagers standing at the entrance holding shovels and hoes. They all looked very nervous. Only when they saw Hamilton bringing people back did they relax a little.

But when he turned around and saw Darien and others following at the back, his expression, which had just relaxed, suddenly became tense again.

"Don't be nervous. They are magicians. I thought they might be able to help us, so I brought them back," said Hamilton.

"But what if it's the same person as that missionary? We really can't bear any more shock," said one of the villagers.

"Let's try it first. There is no other way. They don't live with us. No one lives in Sarah's house now, so let them move in temporarily. As long as they don't stay with us, nothing should happen." Hamilton said.

The villagers were agitated for a while, but finally agreed.

It was getting late, so Hamilton took them to Sarah's house, and then other villagers brought them food, and there was nothing more.

"Take this stone and hang it behind the door. With its protection, missionaries cannot enter the house. Do not open the door on your own initiative. No matter who asks you to open the door, it is an illusion. Close the windows as well. Do not open any doors or windows. Let's talk about it tomorrow if you have anything to say. It's getting late." Hamilton gave hurried instructions and ran away without looking back.

"I don't know why I have goose bumps all over my body." Hawkins stroked his arm.

"This stone doesn't look special. It looks like a large pebble picked up from any river." Sewell said, looking at the stone.

"There's a pattern on it. Is it a, triangle?" Darien turned the stone over. There was a triangle engraved on it, and there was a strange symbol inside the triangle.

Perhaps this stone is related to the god that the villagers mentioned and that they believe in.

Darien gave the stone to Sevier and asked him to hang it behind the door, and then asked Hawkins to check the doors and windows in the house.

This house is not very big and there is no second floor. It only has one floor and only two rooms.

There is no living room here at all. The kitchen and dining room are connected, so you can go into the house to sleep after eating.

The things in the house had also been cleaned up by the original owner. There was almost nothing here except a few tall, large and bulky cabinets that could not be taken away.

The bed boards were bare.

"It's still early, let's go back first." Darien looked at the sky outside the window. Sunset was at least half an hour away, which should be enough time for him to go back and make his bed.

"Then let's go quickly. There's nothing here and I don't think I'll be able to sleep." Hawkins quickly stood up.

Darien pushed open the door here and returned to the tower.

Seville went to find a bed and a quilt, and Darien called Pluto to take care of the newly born dragon Zephyr as a parent.

After packing up their things, they opened the door again and returned to Feilin Village.

Night falls.
