Chapter 44 Awakening of Consciousness

The torrent of energy it released, less than a centimeter away from Wen Shifei's back, collided with an invisible wall of sighs, and then collapsed! The dissipated energy turned into a scorching air wave, fiercely blowing Wen Shifei away!

“Boom—!!!”

The massive liquid metal container, deprived of its core energy source and control nodes, began a chain reaction of internal collapse! The viscous silver-gray liquid limp, solidify, and crackle as if lifeless! The piercing sound of metal twisting and breaking, the explosion of energy overload, the gurgling sound of liquid leaking... all rang out in unison! The entire underground space felt like the end of the world!

Wen Shifei was thrown back by the blast and landed heavily on a pile of loose cables at the edge of the platform, which cushioned some of the impact. She struggled to raise her head and looked towards the center of the platform through the dense smoke and sparks.

There, where Lu Chenenteng once stood, there was only dust slowly falling in the air, flickering with a faint glow, like the last fireflies on a summer night, quickly dimming and dissipating.

Ahead, the massive liquid metal container was crumbling and disintegrating, its crimson glow extinguished completely, leaving only a dead, rapidly solidifying mass of metal. The "Zero" matrix... had ended.

it's all over.

A vast, empty, dead silence, accompanied by excruciating pain emanating from every part of her body, instantly overwhelmed Wen Shifei. She stared blankly at the drifting speck of light, at the spot where the forever vanished figure once stood. Lu Cheneng's final, calm, yet wistful look, that silent word "go," burned like a red-hot iron, deeply engraved in the depths of her soul.

Tears flowed silently, mixing with the blood and dust on her face, and slid down her face. She opened her mouth, but no sound came out, only her body trembling violently and uncontrollably.

She didn't know how long it had been, perhaps only a few seconds, or perhaps a century, when a very slight rustling sound, like a breeze blowing through dust, began to sound behind her.

Wen Shifei turned his head very slowly and stiffly, like a sculpture that was awakened.

Between the cold cables and broken pipes piled up at the edge of the platform, a hand covered in dust and oil stretched out with difficulty and trembling, trying in vain to grab something.

Then, a thin figure, also covered in dirt and scars, struggled to crawl out of the pile of industrial debris, bit by bit. He coughed violently, and every cough caused the wounds all over his body to spasm painfully.

He raised his head, his face was covered with dust and scratches, but those eyes... those eyes were like the night sky washed by a rainstorm, clear, tired, with the confusion of surviving a disaster, and a kind of... long-lost warmth that belonged to "human".

No longer the cold electronic blue, nor the desperate black of blood and tears.

It was a look that Wen Shifei was familiar with, yet it seemed as if there was a thousand mountains and rivers between them...it belonged to Lu Cheneng's eyes.

He looked blankly at the hellish scene around him, the collapsed mother vessel, and the filled smoke. Finally, his gaze fell on the red-haired woman who was kneeling in a pool of dust and blood a few steps away, looking at him with tears in her eyes.

The confusion in his eyes deepened, his brows knitted slightly in confusion, his dry lips moved a few times, and an extremely weak, hoarse voice uttered, as if coming from a distant shore:

"……Who are you?"
