Chapter 12
I woke up at nine o'clock this morning and immediately messaged my boss to ask for leave. I'm feeling really unwell from the hangover. I went to the kitchen to get a cup and found an extra sticky note on the fridge, besides the one you had put there before. It was written by Jiayi:
Hengheng, I bought you some groceries. There are also frozen dumplings and wontons in the freezer. Just cook them when you're hungry, and they'll be ready in no time. Eat well. Look at how many times Jiang Jianian has told you to eat well on this refrigerator, but you never listen to him.
I sighed, feeling truly sorry for Jiayi and the others.
It's been a long time since I've had dumplings. I picked out a bag of three-ingredient dumplings, and they tasted pretty good.
Looking at the dumplings, I was reminded of something from back then.
Qi Chengchen was right back then. I was good at understanding love, but not at emotional intelligence.
I often find myself lost in thought, wondering what to do when Jiang Jianian doesn't accept my advances.
One of my roommates suggested I try bringing you breakfast when pursuing someone. On a whim, I got up early on any days I didn't have class to buy you steamed buns. I tried every kind of bun at the school's second cafeteria, including all sorts of weird fillings. In the end, I picked the best one, shredded pork with garlic sauce, for you, but you wouldn't accept it. Every time, you would just raise an eyebrow and walk past me to class. I could only eat one more bun. Later, I started buying other fillings that I liked. If you shook your head, I would start eating them, saving myself the cost of one breakfast.
I still don't think there's anything wrong with it. Anyway, you don't eat them, but I've shown my sincerity and I get to eat steamed buns. It's great. But one time when I went to deliver steamed buns, you didn't shake your head. You just gave me a cold look and left.
I figured you might be angry, so I didn't dare eat the steamed bun. I grabbed it and slipped into your classroom. Luckily, you sat in the last row, and your roommates were all in the front row. I crouched down and squeezed in to sit next to you. You glanced at me but ignored me.
"What's wrong?"
“…”
I shoved the steamed bun from my pocket into your hand, but you didn't seem very happy. You frowned as you handed it to me and turned your head away from me.
You were frowning as you stared at your finance professor, as if he owed you money. I reached out and took your hand from under the table, rubbing it a couple of times. Your fingers were beautiful, with distinct knuckles, and they felt dry and warm to the touch. You didn't pull away from me. That was the first time I had physical contact with you.
Later you said, "You're chasing someone, but you've already filled yourself up with anger before you've even caught up with them."
It was only after we got together that I discovered how amazing you are at cooking. Although Qi Chengchen and I have been independent since childhood, my cooking skills are really terrible. Qi Chengchen would rather cook for me than let me waste ingredients.
But as the old saying goes, "The way to a man's heart is through his stomach." After we got married, I tried my best to learn to cook, but every time I made a dish, we were both disgusted by the result. In the end, you could only laugh and say, "You're really good, honey."
I looked up and sighed, "President Jiang, can I take care of sweeping, washing dishes, and cleaning from now on? I'm not actually that useless."
"You can also serve me in bed."
I leaped onto your back, wrapped my arms around your neck, and kissed your ear. You were holding a pot lid, silently bracing yourself against my back, afraid I'd fall: "Don't be silly."
"Jiang Jiang~"
"presumptuous."
"Jiang Jiang is the best cook."
"Hmm, honey, you love me to death, don't you?"
"Of course—the food is burnt."
Holy crap!
...
After breakfast, I went to see my parents. In the afternoon, Qi Chengchen called and asked me to take his cat to the pet store for a bath because he was going on a blind date.
We're going to have a sister-in-law soon.
It just so happened that Jiang Jiang needed a bath too, so I took her to the pet store and then went for a walk in the nearby People's Park by myself. It was quite crowded.
I was sitting on a park bench, lost in thought, when a stray cat came over and lay down next to me. We were both quiet and stayed together for a long time.
Qi Chengchen came to pick up the cat in the evening and brought me a small cake. I asked him how the blind date went, and he said it was alright. As he left, he hesitated, then said, "Hengheng..."
I interrupted him: "Brother, I'm fine. I'll come back and stay with you when I have time."
He didn't say anything.
