Chapter 310 Undercurrents in the Chamber of Commerce
Ever since he felt the baby move, Lu Jingyan wished he could put Su Wantang in his pocket.
In the morning, just as Su Wantang got up, Lu Jingyan brought in a bowl of bird's nest porridge.
"Come on, open your mouth."
Su Wantang was both amused and exasperated: "I have my own hands."
“You’re now under special protection,” Lu Jingyan said seriously. “Your hands need a rest too.”
Su Wantang was amused by him and obediently opened her mouth.
Lu Jingyan fed her carefully, his eyes fixed on her belly.
Did the baby move today?
"He just woke up." Su Wantang wiped her mouth. "Don't keep staring at him, he'll get shy."
Lu Jingyan disagreed: "My son isn't shy."
As soon as she finished speaking, Su Wantang's stomach moved slightly.
Lu Jingyan's eyes lit up, and he immediately knelt down: "Baby, it's Daddy!"
Su Wantang looked at this usually cold and ruthless man, now lying on her stomach like a large dog, and her heart melted completely.
After breakfast, Lu Jingyan insisted on carrying Su Wantang downstairs.
“I really can walk by myself.”
"No, what if he falls?"
Su Wantang said helplessly, "I'm not a porcelain doll."
"In my eyes, you are more precious than a porcelain doll."
These words were so sweet that they touched Meng Wan, who was drinking tea in the living room.
"Jingyan, you're going to spoil Wantang like this."
Lu Jingyan carefully placed his wife on the sofa: "I'm happy to."
Meng Wan shook her head, but her face was full of smiles.
She, as the mother-in-law, was overjoyed that her son treated his wife so well.
Grandpa Lu came out of the study leaning on his cane, saw his grandson's appearance, and snorted.
"What kind of behavior is it for a grown man to spend all his time chasing after women?"
Lu Jingyan said matter-of-factly, "It's only natural that I revolve around my wife."
Grandpa Lu was taken aback, then turned to Su Wantang and said, "Wantang, if this boy bullies you, just tell Grandpa."
Su Wantang smiled and nodded: "Okay, Grandpa."
Lu Jingyan protested, "Grandpa, how could I possibly bully Wantang?"
"Hmph, a man's words are deceitful." After saying this, Old Master Lu turned and went back to his study.
The whole family was amused by the old man's words.
As they were talking, Wang Ma came in from outside.
"Miss, there is a letter for you."
Su Wantang took the letter and glanced at the envelope.
There was no sender's name written on it, only a small begonia flower mark.
A thought struck her; she knew it was a letter from Aunt Fang.
"I'll go upstairs and take a look."
Lu Jingyan immediately stood up: "I'll stay with you."
"No need, I can go by myself." Su Wantang patted his hand. "You keep Mom company for a while."
Although Lu Jingyan was reluctant, he still nodded.
Su Wantang returned to her room and opened the envelope.
The letter was short, containing only one sentence: "See you at the usual place."
She burned the letter, changed into inconspicuous clothes, and quietly left through the back door.
Aunt Fang was already waiting in the courtyard of Chunshu Hutong.
Upon seeing Su Wantang, Aunt Fang immediately came to greet her.
"Miss, you've arrived."
Su Wantang nodded and sat down on the stone bench.
"Aunt Fang, what happened?"
Aunt Fang's expression was very serious: "Miss, we have found a clue about the traitor."
Su Wantang frowned: "Who is it?"
"Sister Lan."
Upon hearing the name, Su Wantang paused for a moment.
She knew Sister Lan; she was in charge of the medicinal herb business in the Chamber of Commerce. When her mother was alive, she trusted Sister Lan a lot.
Are you sure?
Aunt Fang nodded: "Recently, Sister Lan's behavior has been very abnormal. She has been in close contact with Qian Hao from Derentang in private."
Su Wantang narrowed her eyes.
Qian Hao? Is that the guy who made Qiao Lingling steal the recipe?
"What's going on between her and Qian Hao?"
Aunt Fang sighed: "That's the problem."
She paused for a moment, then continued, "Sister Lan's husband is Uncle Sun."
Su Wantang had heard her mother mention the name Uncle Sun before.
He was Bai Xiuzhu's most trusted accountant, in charge of the core accounts of all the Haitang Chamber of Commerce's industries in the north.
"What happened to Uncle Sun?"
"Uncle Sun is sick," Aunt Fang said in a low voice. "He has contracted a strange disease that no doctor can cure. He is now bedridden and his life hangs by a thread."
Su Wantang understood.
"So, Sister Lan is seeking medical treatment for her husband?"
Aunt Fang nodded: "We suspect that Sister Lan was likely used by Qian Hao. Qian Hao promised to give her valuable medicinal herbs from Derentang on the condition that she betray the interests of the Chamber of Commerce."
Su Wantang fell silent.
If that's the case, then while Sister Lan's behavior is hateful, it's also somewhat understandable.
Desperate to save her husband's life, she would do anything.
"Is there really no one who can cure Uncle Sun's illness?"
Aunt Fang shook her head: "We've consulted several renowned doctors, but they're all helpless."
She looked at Su Wantang with pleading in her eyes.
“Miss, I know you are pregnant and shouldn’t meddle in other people’s business. But…”
She paused, and her voice became even lower.
“Uncle Sun’s accounts are too important. If something happens to him and those accounts fall into the hands of outsiders, the entire chamber of commerce will be finished.”
Su Wantang raised her head and looked at Aunt Fang.
You want me to make a move?
Aunt Fang knelt down: "Miss, I know this request is excessive. But besides you, there really is no one else who can save Uncle Sun."
Su Wantang helped Aunt Fang up: "Don't kneel, let's talk this out."
Aunt Fang stood up, her eyes a little red.
“Miss, as long as Uncle Sun recovers, it will not only keep Sister Lan calm, but also protect the Chamber of Commerce’s secrets.”
Su Wantang leaned back in her chair, gently stroking her belly.
The child inside kicked gently, as if to remind her to be careful.
She really doesn't want to cause any more trouble right now.
Pregnancy is already tough, and coupled with her previous battles with Qiao Lingling, she's been feeling quite exhausted lately.
However, she could not sit idly by and ignore the legacy left by her mother.
The Haitang Chamber of Commerce is the result of my mother's hard work and the business she wants to leave to her children.
She couldn't let it be ruined by her own hands.
Aunt Fang looked at Su Wantang, not daring to say anything more, and just waited anxiously.
The courtyard was quiet, with only the sound of the wind rustling through the leaves.
After a long while, Su Wantang spoke.
Where is Uncle Sun now?
Aunt Fang's eyes lit up: "It's in a small courtyard in the west of the city, very secluded."
Su Wantang nodded: "Get ready, I want to go see this Uncle Sun in person."
Aunt Fang was so excited she almost knelt down again: "Miss, are you really willing to help?"
"Let's see first," Su Wantang said, standing up. "However, my identity cannot be revealed."
Aunt Fang nodded quickly: "I understand, I'll go arrange it right away."
Su Wantang thought for a moment and then said, "By the way, let's not alert Sister Lan yet."
"Yes, I know my limits."
Su Wantang glanced at the sky: "Come pick me up in three days, in the afternoon."
"Yes, miss."
After Aunt Fang left, Su Wantang sat in the courtyard for a while.
She needs to think about how to tell Lu Jingyan about this.
Given Lu Jingyan's current protective instincts, he definitely wouldn't agree to her going on house calls if he knew she was going.
If I don't tell him and sneak out without his knowledge, he'll be even more worried if he finds out.
Well, let's just take it one step at a time.
She stood up and slowly walked back.
I passed by a pastry shop and smelled the aroma of osmanthus cake, so I couldn't resist buying two pieces.
After becoming pregnant, her tastes became very strange; she especially craved sweets.
As she walked back with the snacks, she glanced into an alleyway as she passed by.
Two people were standing in the alley, talking.
One of them was Qian Hao from Derentang.
Another woman had her back to her, so her face wasn't visible, but judging from her figure, it should be Sister Lan.
Su Wantang didn't stop, pretending not to see anything, and continued walking forward.
It seems Aunt Fang was right; Sister Lan did indeed have connections with Qian Hao.
That Qian Hao is truly a persistent ghost.
Last time they used Qiao Lingling to steal the recipe, and now they've set their sights on the Haitang Chamber of Commerce.
What exactly does he want to do?
