Chapter 18 I'm Poor, So I'm Right

The Lin and Li families were delighted, but a family of five who were secretly observing were not happy. They glared at the large family with resentment and kept grumbling.

"It's just a black-haired beast that knows how to please people, why is it so rare?"

"Because of the locust plague, who knows how many people will suffer from famine, yet they still have the leisure to raise livestock?"

“I saw it last night. There was only so much grain in one mule cart, and I don’t know how much more there would be in two mule carts. Anyway, they can’t finish it all, so they might as well share some with us.”

If Lin Zhaozhao hadn't been the one in charge, she would have been convinced that "I'm poor, so I'm right; the ancients were truly not to be fooled."

For breakfast, I cooked rice porridge as usual, with chopped wild vegetables in it, along with pickled vegetables stir-fried in oil. The taste was quite satisfying.

Everyone scooped up some porridge and started eating. Li Xiujuan picked up a piece of pickled vegetables and mixed it with the porridge. The aroma was enticing. Just as she took a bite, the girl who had traded vegetable dumplings for porridge with her last night came again. "Auntie, give me a bowl of porridge."

"Pour more rice, I didn't even get a taste last night." The girl swallowed, looking completely matter-of-fact.

Li Xiujuan was slightly taken aback, but then anger surged up. Wasn't the implication that she was complaining about the thin rice porridge she had ladled out? She had only offered to help out out of pity, and now she had only made an enemy of her.

"I'm your father?" Li Xiujuan was like a powder keg at this moment. When she caught a glimpse of Lin Fusheng and Lin Zhaozhao's obviously amused expressions, she couldn't help but understand.

“You’re my aunt, not my father. My father is over there.” The girl pointed to Zhu Sanzhuang standing opposite her, looking completely innocent.

"Go find your dad if you want some porridge. I owe you one bowl of porridge, so why should I provide you with a whole pot? And you complain that the porridge is too thin? Get out of here and go eat some vegetable dumplings." The girl didn't understand why Li Xiujuan suddenly changed her expression. She just felt wronged. Why did she get porridge last night when she showed weakness, but not today?

Remembering her parents' grumbling last night, the girl broke down, "You have so much food, how come you can't finish it all? Why don't you share some with us? We're starving!"

"Please have pity on us and give us some food." The girl knelt down on the ground, and the four members of her family came over and knelt down in a row to kowtow.

Li Xiujuan's temples throbbed with pain at the sight.

They're quite adept at using moral blackmail.

In contrast, the rest of the Lin family remained unmoved, and instead drank the rice porridge with increasing enthusiasm. It was obvious that they were watching the show and feeding Xiao Guai whenever she came over.

This scene deeply angered the group of people kneeling on the ground. Their eyes turned red with rage, and they smashed their bowls as they stood up, shouting, "You've gone too far! You'd rather feed an animal than give us a bowl!"

"That depends on the person. A small favor is appreciated, but a large one breeds resentment. Last night you tried to exchange vegetable dumplings for rice porridge with me. I didn't take the dumplings, but gave you a bowl of porridge. Most people would at least be grateful for such a favor, but you two are complaining. And now you're doing it again. What, do you think I have no temper?"

"Let me tell you, with your kind of temperament, I wouldn't give you a single bite even if I threw you away." Li Xiujuan already had a bad temper, and coupled with her big temper, this outburst was quite intimidating.

However, Zhu Sanzhuang didn't take it seriously. He only heard a sharp whistle, and Lin Zhaozhao and her group were surrounded. Most of them were dressed in rags, looked sallow and thin, and had sunken eyes, which was quite eerie.

Lin Zhaozhao subtly gestured to the Lin brothers, Yangyang and Yunzhou, who instantly understood. They then discreetly shielded Old Lady Lin and Old Lady Li behind them and walked towards the mule cart.
