Chapter 64 The Assassins Have Arrived

Chapter 64 The Assassins Have Arrived

Du Wanchun froze on the spot, the warm lips taking away all her breath, her heart feeling as if it was about to stop.

I was enveloped in a soft fragrance.

As the footsteps drew closer, Zhou Ruiyuan's kisses became increasingly urgent.

In the cramped space, sweat gradually appeared on their foreheads. Du Wanchun gripped his collar tightly and shifted her body slightly.

Zhou Ruiyuan noticed her unusual behavior and kissed her even more deeply, cupping the back of her head.

At that moment, the man in black in the alley came up behind them. When he saw the two kissing through the gap, his face immediately showed panic and embarrassment, and he quickly turned around and left.

After the man had walked away, Zhou Ruiyuan slowly released Du Wanchun, whose cheeks were flushed red, and gently wiped her lips. "I'm sorry, just now..."

"It's nothing, my lord." Du Wanchun shook her head, looking at him with her eyes curving into crescents, and broke the awkward silence by asking, "Who was that person just now? Why was he following you?"

Zhou Ruiyuan snapped out of his daze, frowned, and looked in the direction the man had left. "I don't know who it was. Maybe it was a bandit trying to rob me."

Du Wanchun was half-believing and half-doubting, but she didn't ask any more questions. She took his hand and walked outside, saying, "Husband, let's go back quickly, or Mother will worry."

"Mmm." Zhou Ruiyuan let her hold his hand, followed behind her and responded softly, then left the alley with her.

The two found Aunt Zhou at the entrance of the town.

Aunt Zhou was delighted to see them. "Ruiyuan, where did you go just now?"

Zhou Ruiyuan helped Du Wanchun quickly onto the carriage, and while telling Zhou Zhao to drive the carriage faster, he replied, "I was followed on the road, so I came back late."

"Following? Who's behind us?" Aunt Zhou exclaimed in shock. "Could it be?!"

Zhou Ruiyuan quickly reassured her, "I guessed it was a bandit eyeing my silver, but don't worry, I've already shaken him off."

Aunt Zhou breathed a sigh of relief, "That's good."

After saying that, she glanced at Zhou Ruiyuan, and only when she saw that he was unharmed did she feel completely relieved.

Du Wanchun, who was standing nearby, comforted her, saying, "Yes, Mother, let's go home quickly."

Aunt Zhou looked up slightly and saw Du Wanchun's face. Noticing her rosy cheeks and red lips, she quickly asked, "Wanchun, what's wrong? Why is your face so red?"

Upon hearing this, Du Wanchun immediately reached out and touched her face and lips. The kiss from earlier flashed through her mind, and her cheeks flushed even more. "Mother, I'm fine. It's probably just because it's too hot."

After saying that, she fanned herself with her hand.

The weather is getting hotter and hotter, and it is indeed a bit stuffy inside the carriage.

Aunt Zhou quickly pulled up the curtain of the carriage window to let the outside wind in.

A warm breeze blew on her face, and Du Wanchun looked up slightly, just in time to see Zhou Ruiyuan's lips.

Her face was flushed, just like hers.

She suddenly felt her face getting hotter and hotter.

Seeing her face growing increasingly red, Aunt Zhou pulled the curtain back up again, looking puzzled. "Is it still hot?"

Du Wanchun awkwardly turned her head to look out the window. "Mother, it's not hot anymore, it's much better."

Aunt Zhou also picked up a fan and fanned her.

Zhou Ruiyuan sat to the side, clutching the comb and rouge he had been protecting tightly in his hands, hesitating about how to give them to Du Wanchun.

However, he had not yet delivered the comb and rouge by the time the carriage stopped at his doorstep.

The family got off the carriage and took down the newly bought oil and cloth.

After everything was unloaded, Aunt Zhou took a small wooden box from the carriage herself.

The small wooden box looks simple, but it is carved with lotus flowers, making it look very elegant.

Aunt Zhou strode up to Du Wanchun with the box in her hand and said, “Wanchun, you don’t even have a decent dressing box. I bought you one especially for this purpose. You can put the silver earrings and hairpins that your mother left you in it.”

Du Wanchun took it and opened it to see that a bronze mirror was inlaid inside the small box.

This bronze mirror was smoother than the one Du Wanchun usually used, and it reflected light very clearly.

She loved it so much that she quickly smiled at Aunt Zhou and said, "Thank you, Mother!"

"My dear child, don't be so polite with us. When things get better, I'll buy you something even better," Aunt Zhou said with a smile.

In their ordinary farming family, having such a jewelry box is already quite a luxury.

But Aunt Zhou always felt it wasn't enough; she always wanted to give the best things to her daughters-in-law and sons.

Du Wanchun held the jewelry box and looked at it with increasing delight, smiling as she walked into the courtyard.

Zhou Ruiyuan walked ahead, stopped at the door and glanced back at Du Wanchun. Seeing her joyful smile, the corners of his mouth unconsciously turned up. Then he turned around and continued walking into the house.

The instant he stepped through the door, a long sword was pressed against his neck.

"Your Highness, you've really been hard to find."

The man from the alley earlier, gripping a long sword and with cold eyes, slowly walked towards him.

A hint of surprise flashed in Zhou Ruiyuan's eyes as he looked at the sword's edge and retreated step by step.

Du Wanchun, who was walking in this direction, was startled by what she saw and stopped in her tracks, not moving any further.

Aunt Zhou smiled and prepared to step forward, "Wanchun, what's wrong?"

As soon as she finished speaking, she looked up and saw the sword pressed against Zhou Ruiyuan's throat.

"Ruiyuan!" Aunt Zhou exclaimed in surprise.
