Chapter 12 Long Time No See
Lu Erbai was completely dazed. He squinted and stared for a while before recognizing who was in front of him.
His face showed surprise, and he asked incredulously, "You are... Miss Shu?"
"It's me, Uncle Lu, long time no see." Shu Yu stopped in front of them and greeted them with a smile.
The three people in front of her, like Sanya, were all emaciated and thin, their clothes patched and empty. Lu Erbai was even more haggard and weathered than she had seen him a year ago, and did not look like a man in his early thirties at all.
Lu Erbai felt a little awkward, so he forced a smile and nodded, "Oh, yes, it's been a long time. Um, Miss Shu, what brings you here? Is there something you need from me?"
Shu Yu's gaze lingered on his crossed left leg for a moment, then she turned halfway to the side and said, "There's something I need to discuss, but it's not convenient to talk here. Let's go inside."
Lu Erbai readily agreed, "Yes, yes, let's go inside."
The old lady opened her mouth, thinking to herself, "Why does this girl act like she doesn't consider herself an outsider? This is their home, yet she speaks as if she's the one in charge."
She and Lu Erbai's wife, Ruan, helped Lu Erbai into the main room, one on each side.
Sanya followed closely behind, and after everyone sat down, she ran to the kitchen to pour water, placing a bowl in front of each person.
Shu Yu looked at the bowls in front of her, which were all pitted and uneven except for her own, and felt a little embarrassed to drink water.
Noticing her gaze, Lu Erbai seemed even more uneasy. He said in a low voice, "My home is simple, and there's no tea or anything. Miss Shu, please don't mind."
"Uncle Lu, you're too kind. This spring water is very sweet; I prefer it to tea."
Lu Erbai visibly breathed a sigh of relief and rubbed his hands together. "That's good, that's good."
He kept his head down, then noticed the old woman nudging his arm repeatedly, gesturing with her eyes, and whispering, "Why don't you introduce her? Who is this girl? How do you know her? I've never heard you mention her before."
Lu Erbai realized what was happening, but before he could speak, Shu Yu spoke first, "My name is Shu Yu. A year ago, when I fell off a cliff, it was Uncle Lu who saved me. I was seriously injured at the time and was never fully conscious. Later, when I was able to get out of bed, Uncle Lu had already passed away. I don't know where Uncle Lu lives, and I feel really bad for not being able to thank him in person."
Shu Yu was somewhat glad that she had taken a couple more seconds to think things through in the county town and bought some meat and pastries. Otherwise, if she had gone empty-handed and discovered that Lu Erbai was not only her biological father but also her savior, she would have been truly embarrassed.
She pushed the meat and pastries towards them, saying, "I came in a hurry and it's late, so I only bought this much. I'll buy it later..."
Before Shu Yu could finish speaking, Lu Erbai hurriedly waved his hand, "No need, no need, no need. You already gave me the money, that's enough. Why would I need to buy these things? Really, it's not necessary."
As soon as he finished speaking, the old lady glared at him.
The old lady shoved the meat and pastries toward herself and scolded Lu Erbai, "Second brother, are you stupid? This is a kind gesture from them. If you don't accept it, Miss Shu will feel uneasy. Besides, we can't return this meat and pastries. You're injured, and the doctor said you need to eat more. How long has it been since you ate meat? And Da Hu and San Ya haven't had any decent pastries either."
