Chapter Thirty-One: Her Tomatoes

As soon as they entered the city, Xu Nuo rushed to the hospital with Li Xian. They were delayed on the way because she was afraid that the doctor would be off work if they arrived too late.

Fortunately, there was a female doctor in the surgery room. After being coaxed by Xu Nuotian for a few words, and after looking at Li Xian's injuries, she frowned and said, "Comrade, please sit down. The family should go pay the bill. We need to have the surgery immediately."

It was only then that Xu Nuo noticed the injuries on Li Xian's body, and she immediately regretted making him carry her all the way.

Xu Nuo turned to pay, but was grabbed and held firmly in front of her by the man's hand on her wrist: "I'll go."

The female doctor's eyes nearly popped out of her head: "Comrade, where are you going? Don't you care about your life? Sit down right now."

Xu Nuo glared at him fiercely, scolding him, "Stay put, I'll be back in a bit."

Then the female doctor, who had been staring wide-eyed, saw the young man, who was as fierce as a troublemaker, obediently sit down and simply put a roll of something into the little girl's pocket.

Xu Nuo looked at it curiously and saw that it was a roll of money.

He turned to the side, covered his body with his clothes to hide his wound, and said to her, "Be careful, walk slowly."

Xu Nuo nodded and turned to pay.

His gaze was still fixed on the door, and the female doctor, unusually, teased him, "Young man, are you so concerned about your partner?"

Li Xian was taken aback, the lingering affection on his face vanished, and he lowered his eyes and said softly, "She's not."

"Huh?" The female doctor didn't hear clearly, but the nurse had already come in, so she immediately said to the nurse, "Hurry up."

Li Xian silently thought to himself: She is not my girlfriend.

Li Xian didn't utter a sound while being stitched up, but the female doctor was terrified. Such injuries would have left most people half-dead, but this young man was acting as if nothing had happened.

The only sounds in the operating room were the faint sounds of skin being stitched up. Li Xian's gaze remained fixed on the door, which was covered by a long curtain. When he heard a noise outside the door, he shifted his body slightly.

"Don't move."

He obediently sat back down.

Xu Nuo didn't dare to disturb him, so she found a seat outside and sat down obediently to wait for him.

Li Xian had three severe scratches on his body, two of which had been stitched up. The doctor said, "Let's wait and see about this one; I'm afraid you won't be able to hold on."

Li Xian's gaze pierced through the curtain and fell upon the pair of white sneakers outside. He shook his head and said, "Please hurry, I'm in a rush."

The female doctor glanced out the door, and whether it was envy or regret, she lightened her grip a little.

Although the two came together, the girl looked like a pampered city girl, while the young man seemed to have an extraordinary air about him, but he was covered in farm work scars and wore ordinary coarse cloth clothes.

The female doctor asked curiously, "Was that girl a sent-down youth?"

Li Xian shook his head, his lips pressed tightly together, showing no intention of speaking again, so the female doctor didn't ask any more questions.

Xu Nuo didn't know how long she waited; it felt like an eternity. As soon as the doctor lifted the curtain and came out, she rushed in nervously.

Li Xian was getting dressed when he saw her come in and was about to stand up when Xu Nuo quickly stopped him: "Don't move, sit still."

She handed him his clothes, and when she saw the various wounds and bandages on his body, she couldn't help but feel her eyes well up with tears.

Xu Nuo sniffed, and his voice rang out above her head. Although his voice was very low and hoarse, it was unusually gentle: "I'm fine."

She blinked quickly, gave a soft "Mmm," and was about to help him get dressed when he quickly stood up: "I'll do it."

Her red eyes widened immediately, and her voice, soft and sweet, gently nudged him: "Sit down."

Li Xian obediently sat back down and silently put on the long robe with her help. He put on the coat himself, and when he saw that her eyes were still red, his heart softened.

He bent down, looked into her eyes, and comforted her, "I'm all better, really."

Xu Nuo took out the remaining money and gave it to him: "This is what's left."

Fearing that his hands might be unable to move easily, she leaned close to him, stood on tiptoe, and stuffed the money into his breast pocket.

After she finished, she smiled and looked up, saying, "Okay."

His eyes were filled with her smiling face, and after a long while he finally spoke: "You've worked hard."

Xu Nuo grinned, and the two went out to get the medicine. Xu Nuo carefully asked him, "Li Xian, did it hurt just now?"

Li Xian turned his head to look at her. She took small steps, looking where she was going, with one small hand swinging back and forth by her side. She was very well-behaved. He clenched his fist at his side.

She looked over, and he looked away: "No..."

Seeing that she was about to pout again, he quickly said, "A little."

It was already getting dark. Xu Nuo was afraid that Xue Ping would worry, so she was in a hurry to go home. Li Xian escorted her downstairs and said, "Go back now. Be careful on the stairs, and go slowly."

Xu Nuo didn't leave immediately, but said to him, "Wait here for a moment."

A little while later, she came down with a small metal box and a few tomatoes in her hand.

Xu Nuo pulled him into a deserted alley.

"Lower your head."

Li Xian lowered his head, puzzled, and a round tomato was stuffed into his mouth. She stood on tiptoe and tilted her head back. Seeing that he swallowed it, she put another one in his mouth.

The familiar comfort settled in my throat.

His gaze was fixed on her, on her delicate eyebrows and eyes, her clear eyes, her small lips, and her arched eyebrows that she always liked to raise.

Finally, it landed on her delicate, crimson lips.

Her lips moved slightly: "Okay."

He came to his senses.

Xu Nuo handed him the lunchbox: "Eat quickly."

The lunchbox contained some red date cakes, and all the herbal water the family had at home—Xu Nuo had gathered it all.

Li Xian didn't move, his gaze fixed on the pastries, lost in thought.

Xu Nuo carefully poked the uninjured part of him, reminding him to come back to his senses: "Li Xian."

Seeing him looking over, she pushed the pastries in front of him, tilted her head, her eyes sparkling like stars, and said in a sweet, trembling voice, "Eat up!"

He still didn't move, so Xu Nuo had to put it in his mouth herself. When he didn't open his mouth, she pretended to cry, "My hands are so sore, my hands are so sore."

Li Xian had no choice but to open his mouth and accept it.

As soon as he took a bite, she chuckled smugly, and as she chuckled, a piece of red date cake appeared in her mouth.

Li Xian withdrew his hand, his fingertips lingeringly kneading together.

Xu Nuo gave him the remaining red date cake to take with him so he could eat it on the way back if he got hungry.

Fearing he might refuse, she preemptively said in a coquettish tone, "I can't say no. This is a thank you gift for helping me pick fruit and chestnuts."

She shoved the lunchbox into his arms and then turned and ran upstairs.

He sighed and whispered a helpless reminder to her, "Slow down."

Watch the road, Nuonuo.

She had been gone for a long time before he turned and walked in another direction, but not the way back to the village.

Mo San Niang was quite surprised by his arrival. She looked around and quickly invited him in.

A quarter of an hour later, Mo Sanniang smiled broadly, but still asked curiously, "Young Master Li, you refused several times before when Master Wu asked me to talk to you, but why this time..."

They took the initiative.

Li Xian's lips curled into a self-deprecating smile, his face pale, and he said in a low voice, "It's nothing."

"Have you encountered any difficulties?"

He shook his head, said goodbye, and left Mo San Niang's house.

The road back to the village was pitch black, yet he walked as if it were daytime, his eyes cold and silent.

Only when he sees the lunchbox in his arms does his eyes light up with endless warmth.
