Xu Nuo tiptoed in and, upon seeing Xue Ping and Xu Jin'an sitting in the living room, immediately stood up straight and walked in as if it were natural.
She smiled innocently: "Dad, Mom, what are you doing here so late at night?"
Xue Ping glared at her and said irritably, "You heartless brat, you've been gone for so many days. You said you'd be back today, and now we're only just seeing you."
Xu Jinan's focus, however, was on something else. He asked suspiciously, "What did you take out with you just now?"
He ran like a rabbit, and he didn't even get a good look at him.
Xu Nuo said "Oh" naturally, "I'll take it down to my friend and give it to her."
Before Xue Ping could ask any more questions, Xu Nuo suddenly clutched her stomach and cried out, "My stomach hurts, I need to go to the toilet, ouch, it hurts so much."
Xue Ping and Xu Jin'an stood up anxiously and asked with concern, "Are you alright, Nuonuo? What happened? Did you eat something bad?"
Xu Nuo walked into the bathroom and replied, "I think I ate something bad, ouch."
The door slammed shut.
She breathed a sigh of relief when there was no more noise outside, but then she heard a voice from outside the door: "Nuonuo, while you were away these past few days, Director Chen's son came by twice. He said that the herbal tea from last time was finished and asked if you could buy some more."
Director Chen is Xu Jin'an's immediate superior. His father is a retired military officer who suffered a bullet wound to the bone years ago, leaving him with sequelae and often experiencing excruciating pain. Lately, the pain has been so severe that he can't sleep at night. Once, when Xu Jin'an mentioned this, Xu Nuo brought out a box of herbal tea and asked Xu Jin'an to give it away as a favor.
Director Chen initially didn't take it seriously, but seeing Xu Jinan's confident tone, he decided to give it a try.
This trial proved effective; the elderly man's injured leg was hurting for less and less time, and there were even signs of recovery.
Because of the herbal tea, Xu Jinan has been much more polite these past few days. Yesterday, Director Chen's son, Su Zhao, even came to the house, saying that he had run out of herbal tea and wanted to ask Xu Jinan where he bought it.
Xu Jinan had no choice but to tell the truth: his daughter, Xu Nuo, had bought it from the countryside, but he really didn't know where she had bought it.
Su Zhao said, "Could you please tell me, Comrade Xu Nuo, where I can buy it?"
Xu Jinan was also anxious: "Nuonuo went to Luxian Village to teach. She'll be back tomorrow. Young Master Su, I'll ask her how she is when she gets back tomorrow."
Xu Jin'an waited all day, but Xu Nuo still hadn't returned. In the afternoon, Su Zhao went to the door again to ask if there was any news about the herbal tea. He was extremely disappointed to learn that Xu Nuo hadn't returned from Conglu County yet.
Xu Jinan was extremely anxious. He had finally managed to build a good relationship with Director Chen, but this incident would surely offend him.
He repeatedly assured him, "Young Master Su, please wait a day or two. I will inform you as soon as Nuonuo returns. If she is not back by tomorrow, I will personally go to Luxian Village to pick her up."
Su Zhao was very polite. The handsome and refined young man replied politely, "Thank you, Uncle Xu. Thanks to your herbal tea, my grandfather has finally been able to sleep peacefully these days. However, now that the herbal tea is finished, he often wakes up in pain at night."
Xu Jinan repeatedly assured him that Xu Nuo would definitely return tomorrow.
If it hadn't been brought up again today, Xu Nuo would have forgotten that she had given Director Chen herbal tea. She replied from the bathroom, "No problem, I can buy it tomorrow."
Xu Jinan finally breathed a sigh of relief.
