Chapter 20 I Refusal

It seems that Puka's promise of a next meeting is not true.

This is really quite...sudden.

If this were in a novel, the villain would have survived for at least a dozen episodes. Xu Milu didn't expect him to be so hasty.

Puka's poisonous milk instantly killed him, and Xu Milu, lying on the rock, could hear the "cheep cheep" sound of the pack of bear-mastiff dogs gnawing on the corpses below the cliff.

For some reason, she remained completely calm, as if it were nothing out of the ordinary, like watching a lion hunt an antelope on a nature documentary.

You should know that she used to be the kind of person who would gag even when watching forensic documentaries.

Perhaps it's the genes in my body that don't belong to Earth that are causing this problem.

Xu Milu patted the dust off her windbreaker and thought calmly.

"Aww—"

"Woof woof—"

"Woof! Woof!"

The bulldogs that had been circling the valley all followed the scent and chased after Vera, while the few wounded mercenaries left on the cliff escaped this calamity, whether that was lucky or unlucky is hard to say.

"Great! We're saved!"

"God of Gourmet Food! We are saved!"

"Great!! We survived!"

The wounded soldiers showed a hint of joy at surviving the ordeal, but then became somewhat panicked again.

Puka was not only the captain of the first adventure team of the Wolf Head Mercenary Group, but also the favorite son of the group leader, Su Lang. If Su Lang found out that Puka died here, how could they be happy even if they survived?

"Your favorite? How many children does Su Lang actually have? Judging from Puka's tone, Vera isn't even Puka's biological sister?"

Xu Milu grasped the key point.

A mercenary with an injured eye, his head bandaged, said dejectedly:

"Lord Su Lang has seven sons and one daughter, but only Captain Puka is the first heir of the mercenary group. Miss Vera is actually Lord Su Lang's illegitimate daughter, a fact known to everyone in Buji Town—if Lord Su Lang finds out we deserted our post..."

"Should we run away tonight? Otherwise, Lord Su Lang will definitely kill us!"

"The port is all Wolf Head Mercenary Group territory, where can we run? We're doomed..."

The mercenaries looked as if they had lost their parents, as if the sky had fallen.

Xu Milu's heart stirred. Staring at the incomplete skeleton at the foot of the mountain, she thought for a moment and asked:

Are there any other mercenary groups on Phuket Island besides the Wolf Head Mercenary Group?

The mercenary who had just started speaking looked up and whispered:

"Actually, the most famous group in town is the Aoki Mercenary Group. The leader of the Aoki Mercenary Group, Lord Aoki, is a seven-star gourmet hunter. Lord Su Lang married Miss Vera to the Baron in order to use the Baron's power to suppress the Aoki Mercenary Group. That bear-mastiff puppy was also specially made to please the Baron."

Xu Milu's heart stirred, and she whispered a few words to the others.

"Will this really avert punishment?"

"Miss Milu, are you telling the truth?"

"Will this make Lord Su Lang forgive us?"

The group was still somewhat skeptical of Xu Milu's suggestion.

Xu Milu shrugged: "There's nothing I can do if you don't believe me, but this is your only chance to quell Su Lang's anger. There's no harm in trying."

The group looked at each other, hesitated for a long time, and still couldn't make a decision.

“I think you can trust Miss Milu.”

...

...

A figure leaped up from the bottom of the cliff. Xu Milu looked closely and realized it was Jimmy, who had been the first to act as bait to lure away the pack of bears and mastiffs.

"God of Gourmet Food! Jimmy, you're still alive!!"

"Jimmy, you're alive!! That's great!"

"Jimmy! You're so lucky!!"

Everyone excitedly surrounded Jimmy, looking him up and down. Apart from his somewhat tattered clothes and disheveled appearance, he was surprisingly unharmed.

"It seems there's a reason why Puka values you; your ability to escape is truly remarkable."

Xu Milu was somewhat surprised, but then she looked at Jimmy's empty chest and seemed to be deep in thought:

Could Jimmy be the reason why those mastiffs turned back so quickly?

If that's really the case, then this mercenary group truly lives up to its name of "everyone is a villain".

Jimmy seemed oblivious to Xu Milu's scrutiny, grinning as he brushed the grass clippings off his clothes, a hint of cunning flashing in his azure eyes:

“Miss Milu, you must be no ordinary person, right? The only ones who could safely cross the Thorn Plains to the Snow Valley are either gourmet hunters or nobles with guards. The dinner you ate last night was prepared using a special cooking method, and even used the extremely precious spice, Tortoise Shell Black Needle Grass—if a gourmet hunter like you could testify for them, Lord Su Lang would surely forgive them.”

The people nearby, as if they had found a lifeline, immediately began to plead:

"Is Miss Milu really a gourmet hunter?"

"Miss Milu, if you can testify for us, Lord Su Lang will surely spare us out of your sake!"

"Lady Miru, please testify for us! We really didn't kill Captain Puka!"

Xu Milu looked at Jimmy, who still had that strange smile on his face, as if watching to see what choice Xu Milu would make.

"I don't want to."

Xu Milu calmly refused the group:

“I was just a passerby, and Puka’s death had nothing to do with me. I don’t know what kind of person Su Lang is, but if it were me, after my son died in the mouth of a wild beast, and I unexpectedly learned that there was a gourmet hunter present who did not intervene, I would also resent her for watching my child die here.”
