Chapter 42: Dead end.

The air crackled from the electrifying presence of the two powerful men. If Aragon’s eyes were a bit of burning darkness, then Zoan’s resembled that of rising and choking smokey depths. One gave rise to the other, and a battle between them would never end unless the fire is quenched...by something having the qualities of water.

Aragon was now dressed in his royal attire because he had something important to attend to at the moment. Some unexpected events had turned down, but everything was now back in his control again. Aletta kept looking back and forth between both men, gaping like a complete idiot. There was no one around them, as if everyone was intentionally avoiding walking by them.

Like, who in their Normal senses would?

"How long has it been since I last saw you, Aragon?" Zoan casually took a step towards him, and Aletta just wanted to hold him back because the closer they got, the more difficult it got for anyone around to breathe. The air was so tense and heavy like there was a voiceless screaming in the background that could make a glass crack and shatter into pieces, "Two years? Four? Seven?" Zoan continued like none of it was bothering him as he took another step closer to his brother.

Aletta gripped the front of her dress hard, her lashes trembling. She was rooted to her spot like a tree, with that strange fear that making the slightest movement can tip this balance. Zoan’s brother hadn’t moved from his position, but Zoan wouldn’t stop moving forward and that was seriously bothering her. They had just arrived here, and she guessed that from his dressing zoan’s brother had to be someone very important here so they can’t start any trouble.

Because she could think about her actions further, Aletta’s body was already moving despite her brain yelling at her to stop. She had already crossed over, dropped everything she was holding, and blocked zoan’s path. She extended her hands to each side, her breathing getting heavier with the nervy seconds ticking by. She didn’t have a plan to stop him so the least she could do was shake her head at him in a disapproving manner.

All her efforts fell into naught when she realized his eyes were still glued to his brother’s, and he didn’t even notice her figure standing there. Aletta swallowed hard at first, building up the courage to glance back at the other man behind them, wondering what could be going on in their minds, though one thing was clear- they weren’t on good terms.

When Zoan took the next step and almost bumped into her, Aletta quickly moved backward. Her presence wasn’t doing anything to stop him, and she couldn’t think of anything right now. The man was too heavy and strong for her to pull away from here, and she was afraid to say a single word. At that moment, Aletta’s toes curled in warning and she became aware that her arm was moving higher towards his head, and before she could stop herself, she had already given him a good knock at the very center of his head.

Zoan abruptly paused and took a quick blink as his dumbfounded eyes finally shifted from his brother and down to the redhead who was already turning into jelly under his glare. Her knuckle was still on his head, and her lashes were trembling even harder, "T..there was an insect on your head." She forcefully spilled out, though she knew he was much aware that she was lying to him.

He gave her a disbelieving look, and she nodded back fervently at him.

"I’m very serious. Though I didn’t get it, it flew away." She managed out the second time, trying very hard not to stammer. Her throat ran dry and itched at the same time. When an incredulous smile finally broke out on his face, she wished the floor would open and swallow her whole right there, "Haha," she added, feeling so stupid at the moment.

"An... insect?" Zoan lifted a brow.

Her left eye began to flutter uncontrollably, "Yes."

"And that’s why you... Hit me?"

’You do it all the time’ she wanted to scream, but held back her tongue and nodded instead, "I’m supposed to look after you, right?"

"Shall I relieve you of your duties now? Hm?" His eyes sprung with rage, right before he took a threatening step toward her. Zoan’s chest bumped against hers, and she stumbled back and landed on her butt.

Aletta took in a deep breath to ease her own rising infuriation. She scoffed at herself for being too damn obedient for this long to someone like him. Perhaps it was because of her stupid feelings that she had this notion to keep being around him when she could go her way anytime she wanted. Taking a deep breath, she stood up with full intentions of giving him a very dirty slap, but she could only make it to the front of his shirt, gripping a handful, "Oh you don’t need to do that because I’m doing it myself!" She threw the words straight into his unbelievably exquisite and stunning looks, "You caught me when I was falling from a tree, but you just happened to be standing there right?"

The clean-cut image of how she had tripped and fallen with her legs around his shoulders flashed inside her mind, and her upper physique had bounced slightly forward towards his face which happened to the first time they had made eye contact and Aletta’s heart had stopped. That moment for her was spellbinding, and that was the exact moment her heart began thudding for him. If he hadn’t been there, she would have died from the height she had fallen from and perhaps it was due to her nature, she wanted to badly repay him by doing all this.

"But you’re just an egotistical annoying loathsome...! Ugh...what do you take me for? I know I’m extremely clumsy, but do you really have to knock me all the time like it’s been your life aim to pound my head till there’s nothing left? Did you have fun throwing all the work at me? Must have been nice to have found someone willing to do absolutely everything for you right? I’m not a slave you damn idiot! Just because I love you doesn’t mean..." Aletta’s heart jumped when the last words slipped out, and she held back from tongue from completing the sentence, "I think I’ve repaid you enough for ’intendedly’ Saving my life. You can pick up your bags and carry them yourself! Tch!"

With one more glare thrown at his fiery eyes, she released his shirt, picked up her things, and walked away from him. Once Aletta had found somewhere she catch her breath, she leaned on the wall and slipped down as horror overtook her eyes, "Good God, what have I done?!"

Zoan was the only person she knew in the palace, and she just had to cut him off. What the hell was she thinking? A place roaming with vampires and witches wasn’t a safe domain for someone like her. The cloak she’s been putting on has been protecting her so far, but what if someone takes it off? No, she would just have to leave the palace immediately.

Looking around, she couldn’t figure out the way again. She did recall a few corners, and found herself standing at a dead end.

She was lost, and there was no one around to guide her out of the place. Aletta’s stomach growled in hunger, and she sighed deeply. She kept on roaming around the palace, and was too scared to approach the scary-looking guards. The maids kept ignoring her requests, and it almost made her want to pull herself out.

Here, she was just an insignificant little woman.

And then, she came across a dead end again. Frustration kicked in fully, and she was just about to scream out her lungs when a faint sound caught her ear. Whipping around to see what was behind her, Aletta’s fear of the palace skyrocketed. Cold air blasted her, and she quickly pressed herself against the wall. Her eyes slowly widened as an intense distressing emotion of repugnance settled in.

Someone had just shown up and was staggering toward her. It was a woman with short Golden hair scattered all over her head and looking dirty with dark circles under her eyes. She had dried blood all over her body, and her skin looked so dried out and cracked. Her cold dead-looking eyes bore into Aletta’s, and the worse was that there was a red liquid pouring out of her lips, coating her torn attires as it rolled down.

Her scrawny-looking hands were stretched out in front of her, and when she opened her mouth it was filled with nothing but that same oozing red liquid just as a grueling low-pitched murmur left her mouth. 𝙛𝓻𝒆𝒆𝒘𝙚𝓫𝙣𝙤𝒗𝙚𝓵.𝙘𝙤𝙢

"Zombieeeeeeee!!!" Aletta screamed out her heart, right before the coal in her eyes disappeared and she passed out right there.
