Chapter 425 An Encounter with Raiders

(That's two updates for today. I'll resume three updates tomorrow. I have a terrible headache and can't write anymore.)

I limped out of the car and entered the abandoned house. The situation is alright now; at least we're only injured.

Most importantly, our purpose in coming to Ninghai was to take Xiaoya and Zhou Qingya away; everything else was secondary. Now that Xiaoya is with us and Zhou Qingya has left with Sister Jing and the others, as long as we don't have too much luck, there shouldn't be any major problems.

Once we return to the research institute, we won't go out again except to find supplies. We'll just live here. As for those raiders and conflicts outside, they have nothing to do with us. As long as they don't bother us, it's fine.

Even after sitting inside, the gunshot wound on my leg still hurt, but it was bearable.

The little girl came back after luring the zombies away. She came to my side, staring at me with a big smile, I don't know what made her so happy.

After a short while, she said, "Brother Xiaonan, do you think I'm dreaming right now?"

I pinched her nose and laughed, "Don't worry, it's not a dream, I'm right here beside you."

The little girl held my hand, rested her head on my shoulder, and said, "Brother Xiaonan, do you know, I had a dream before. I dreamt that you came. Although it was very dark and I couldn't see anything, I knew you were right beside me."

"Really?" I chuckled. She was probably referring to what happened last night, but I didn't call her out on it.

The little girl said, "By the way, Brother Xiaonan, you still haven't told me what happened. Why are there so many people with guns in the villa community? Why do they want to kill us? And Brother Xiaonan, how did you suddenly appear next to me? Am I really not dreaming?"

Faced with the little girl's question, I chuckled, a little helplessly, and said, "You've been unconscious for a day now. Let me tell you slowly. A lot has happened these past two days..."

I spoke slowly and in great detail, and the little girl listened attentively, nodding occasionally and asking questions.

Looking at the situation outside, I realized that half an hour had passed since I finished speaking, and there was still no response from the walkie-talkie in my hand. I didn't know if Sister Jing and the others had arrived in Jiushui Town yet. If they had, it was normal that I couldn't contact them, since we were already outside their range.

After hearing my story, the little girl exclaimed in surprise, "I didn't expect so many things to have happened these past two days! Brother Xiaonan, where are we going now? Will we meet up with Sister Qingya and the others?"

I said, "Okay, let's meet up with them, and then we'll leave Ninghai and head to Mingzhu. I'm currently staying at a research institute on the outskirts of Mingzhu. There aren't many people there. You'll like it when you get there."

The little girl giggled, "As long as Brother Xiaonan is by my side, it doesn't matter where we go."

I patted her head and said, "You're really carefree."

The little girl said, "There's nothing I can do. After coming to Ninghai with Sister Qingya, I felt that everything had changed. There's no Brother Xiaonan, no Uncle Fei Lichao, no Uncle Pu Weichao, no Sister Jing. You're all gone. When we were in the villa community, they all knew that I wasn't afraid of zombies, so they made me do this and that every day. Only Sister Qingya would talk to me. The others didn't treat me like a human being."

"So I've been thinking, when can I go back to Xiaonan's side? That way I won't have to do anything."

Hearing her say these words, I felt sorry for her and said, "Girl, no one will force you to do anything anymore. After we go back, you can do whatever you want."

The little girl smiled and said, "Brother Xiaonan is the best!"

The little girl was quite talkative. I don't know if it was because she felt stifled living in the villa community. She told me about everything that happened after she left Jiajiang. I wasn't bothered. I just felt that I must make sure this girl has a better life in the future and not let her experience those inexplicable things again.

"Brother Xiaonan, have I been talking too much?"

I shook my head and said, "No."

The little girl asked hesitantly, "Then why aren't you saying anything, Brother Xiaonan?"

I smiled and flicked her forehead, saying, "Silly girl, I didn't say anything because I felt I owed you too much. You shouldn't have had to go through all this. If we had been more mature back then, maybe we would still be living in school now."

The little girl covered her forehead and shook her head, saying, "No! Brother Xiaonan, you don't owe me anything! You're the best to me!"

I checked the time; more than forty minutes had passed.

Those convoys on the elevated highway must have left long ago. They've rested here for so long, it's time for them to leave to avoid being caught by the raiders in the villa community.

"Brother Xiaonan, can you tell me about yourself? I want to hear it," the little girl said.

I laughed and said, "After we get back, after we get back, I'll tell you about what's happened to me in the past six months. You can listen to me then."

"Mmm!" The little girl nodded happily.

It's time to leave.

I said, "It's about time. Let's go home."

As I spoke, I stood up from the chair. My injured right leg was too weak to support my weight, and when I put my foot on the ground, the wound on my calf hurt terribly.

I crouched down, lifted the gauze, and took a look. There was nothing wrong; the blood in the wound had already clotted, but it was still very painful.

The little girl asked from the side, "Brother Xiaonan, are you alright? Can you still walk?"

I said, "It's just a minor injury, nothing serious. You can drive later, and I'll give you directions."

"Okay, I'll drive," the little girl said.

Then, she helped me to the door.

However, things took an unexpected turn at that moment.

Two people suddenly jumped out of the door, both of them holding knives. They immediately put the knives to my and the little girl's necks.

I glanced at the two men's clothes; they were tattered, so they didn't look like raiders.

This relieved me.

Recorder Diary 44:

"It's 10:30 PM on the 14th now. A lot has happened today. At 7:30 AM, the child with the cold died. He was killed by the supervisor because the child had turned into a zombie. The supervisor found out and killed him decisively, but the others didn't believe him and wanted to attack the supervisor, but they were persuaded to stop. At noon, the supervisor called a meeting with us and told us to leave because staying here would only lead to death. There was no way to survive. In the end, we all agreed. Around 5 PM, the supervisor disappeared. We don't know where he went. The survivors don't seem to know either, but I always feel like they're lying."
