Jiang Ling used his sensing abilities to confirm that there were no other mutants around before shouting into the communication channel, "No more! We're all done!"
. . . . . .
After cleaning up the battlefield, the few survivors, carrying a pile of spoils and the wounded, did not stop. They followed the map left by the guide and walked two kilometers west to a warehouse supermarket with an underground parking lot.
The searchers had converted the underground parking lot into a temporary shelter, and it took them more than half an hour to get all the wounded and the goods inside. Only then were they able to treat everyone's wounds and collect the spoils.
Dong Xie's broken left arm wasn't in good condition. Jiang Ling had given him emergency treatment, but the wound, exposed to the elements, had already turned black and needed urgent medical attention. The pain was unbearable, and Jiang Ling, unable to tolerate his noise, reluctantly forced him to drink half a bottle of liquor. While drinking after an injury was unhealthy, at least he could get some sleep. He wouldn't lose too much energy due to the pain, and die mid-journey.
The guide's ankle must have been broken. Even if he needed a prosthetic leg later, at least he saved his life. He was probably the luckiest ordinary person in the team.
Old Wei broke his back, probably from the three backpacks he was carrying. He'll be confined to a wheelchair for the rest of his life. Given what he'd done before, he'll probably have to eat peanuts when he returns, so the rest of his life should be worry-free. When Jiang Ling and the others found him on the slope, they thought he was dead.
Xidu's body was not recovered. By the time the battle was over, his blood had dried and his body had been frozen stiff by the cold wind. They could only bring back his backpack and the necklace around his neck.
The remaining three had lost most of their weapons and ammunition. The two rats had used up half their bullets, wiping out several hundred points of ammunition in one battle, and their exoskeleton was running low on energy. Jiang Ling had only two armor-piercing arrows left, one of which she had retrieved from the ground; the other had missed its target and was nowhere to be found. She had also used up one explosive arrow, and the crossbow she had borrowed had a few more scratches on it.
"Several hundred pounds of pork and fat, three pounds of crab roe. How much are they worth?" Jiang Ling took some pork and placed it on the stove in their temporary residence. The sizzling sound gradually echoed in the room, and the aroma of meat drifted into the noses of several people.
The meat of the poisonous stingray is edible, but not much can be salvaged. This pig must have escaped from the Green Zone, and its radiation contamination is still within acceptable limits. Its skin and internal organs are poisonous, and the only edible parts are the muscle and fat of the shoulder, chest, hind legs, and loin. Jiang Ling simply packed them with rope and cloth, and the two big men each carried half.
As for the crabs, the meat was definitely inedible, having been contaminated by the poisonous stingers fired by the pigs. Jiang Ling only recovered the roe from two crabs, and for some reason, only half of the roe from one of them was left.
"Tens of thousands of points, probably! It's mainly because the crab roe is valuable, but it's best to cook it first and then marinate it with salt. They rot very quickly, much faster than pork." The guide's ankles were supported by several wooden boards, and now he was sitting by the fire.
"Can you make crab roe sauce?" Jiang Ling asked curiously. She took out a portable pot from her backpack, poured some water into it and started to cook the synthetic grain.
"I know a little bit. Just follow what I say. But I heard that chili or other spices are needed to cover up the fishy smell. Give me my bag. I brought some cumin powder, all from before the war." The guide tried to move his feet, but the pain soon showed on his face.
"Hey, are you ready for dinner? It smells pretty good~" Mole walked into the room and sniffed. Under his helmet was a round face with a mustache. "Good news! We used the radio here to contact a search team at a nearby station. They'll be here in two hours. You three can take the bus back!"
"No, I want to go to the border station!" the guide struggled immediately.
"If you're just looking for the points, we can do it for you. Consider your spices an investment, and you'll get a share of the profits after they're sold," Jiang Ling interrupted. She was cooking the crab roe in an aluminum bucket in the room, while the synthetic grain beside her gradually turned into meat porridge.
"Um~Okay! I want at least 10%. Spices are not cheap nowadays. And I also provided the production method." He smiled bitterly and replied while touching his legs and feet.
"Okay, that's fair. By the way, how much does it cost to replace a pair of iron arms and legs? Are your points enough?" Jiang Ling turned the aluminum bucket sideways and showed it to the guide. Then, following his instructions, he poured half of a bag of cumin into it and asked while stirring.
"About a few thousand. It'll be cheaper if you have a channel." The flying squirrel's voice came from outside the room. "It's about the same price as replacing a core with us."
Jiang Ling took a look at the meat porridge and added some water to it: "Bring the bowls and spoons, we'll be eating soon."
She saw the crab roe gradually turn golden yellow. At a certain moment, she lifted the aluminum bucket to the ground and poured half a bag of salt she had brought into it.
“How salty does it have to be?” she asked the guide.
“Same as pickles!”
Jiang Ling tasted the stirred crab sauce and found it a little salty, so she added a quarter of a bag of salt. This time, the taste was almost right. Then she found a plastic bucket in the room, rinsed it with water mixed with wine, and poured the crab sauce into it.
The extra food was served as a snack tonight and everyone enjoyed it very much.
