Chapter Fifty-Eight Archery Hall

After all, archery was a required course for Teacher Duanmu, at least in his youth.

Rites, music, archery, charioteering, calligraphy, and mathematics—these are the six arts of a gentleman, the teachings of Confucius!

"射" means to shoot arrows.

Archery was an almost sacred thing in Duanmu Ci's time. The emperor and feudal lords would hold grand archery ceremonies in the Biyong and Pan Palace, which were called "archery rites".

When a boy is born, his father must hold a bow and arrow and shoot at the four directions of heaven and earth to show respect for heaven and earth, to subdue the four directions, and to have great ambitions!

Furthermore, people believed that one's character could be observed through archery.

The saying goes, "Archery is used to observe great virtue. Therefore, in ancient times, the emperor used archery to select feudal lords, ministers, high officials, and scholars. Archery is a matter for men, and thus it is adorned with rites and music. Therefore, among all the rites and music that can be performed repeatedly to establish virtue, nothing is better than archery. Hence, the sage kings devoted themselves to it."

During the Spring and Autumn Period, everyone valued martial arts, and even Confucius was skilled in archery!

Valiant warriors, pillars of the state. Those high-ranking officials, adorned with jade pendants and reciting poetry, would also, when war came, mount their chariots, don leather armor, and take up bows and arrows to fight the enemy; even the hands that held bamboo slips could be used to draw the strings.

Thus, one can imagine how skilled Duanmu Ci was at archery.

However, he didn't want to subdue these students with just a few simple arrows; Duanmu Ci wanted something more, something a little more complicated!

However, this will take some time.

So he said to Xu Zhi, "Could you give me a moment? I'll come over this afternoon."

Xu Zhi laughed, believing that the teacher was afraid and was stalling for time. "Okay."

The archery club members burst into laughter, seemingly mocking something.

Duanmu Ci also laughed, after all, he hadn't shot an arrow in a long time, and he really felt itchy to do it.
