Chapter 8: Asking for a Title Do I Look Like a Human Being to You?
However, the weasel was not afraid of people. On the contrary, it grinned and smiled, seeming very happy.
Chang Xile had never seen such a scene before. She held her breath and dared not speak for a moment.
"You call me classmate?" Seeing Chang Xile remained silent, the weasel spoke first, "So, do you think I look like a human?"
A minute ago, Chang Xile could still console herself by saying it was just a weasel that stole someone's clothes. There are all kinds of things in the world, right? Right...right?
But at this moment, she felt all the hairs on her body stand on end.
This weasel is actually speaking human language.
Chang Xile pinched himself hard and gasped in pain. This wasn't a dream.
"Hmm? Tell me, do I look like a human to you?" The weasel saw that she didn't say anything, so he didn't get anxious and asked again patiently.
Of course it looked like him. It walked upright, wore clothes, could talk, and had human expressions. Even though it was only a few meters away, it looked so real that Chang Xile thought it was a student traveling with him.
Chang Xile didn't dare to answer it. She took a step back calmly, considering whether she could run away along the stream.
"You'll get lost if you run around in the foggy forest late at night," it warned, coaxing me gently. "Answer me, and I'll show you the way."
Why was it so obsessed with this question? Chang Xile frowned, weighed the pros and cons in his mind, and then said carefully, "Like."
The weasel in front of him grinned even wider. It bowed to Chang Xile, then pointed behind it and ran away in the thick fog.
When it disappeared from view, Chang Xile sat down on the ground, exhausted. Cold sweat had already formed on the back of her neck, her palms were sweating, and her legs were too weak to walk.
Was I dreaming? How could animals talk? Chang Xile kept asking herself. After answering the weasel, she felt as if all her strength had been drained away in an instant. She knew she shouldn't be sleeping, but her eyelids were growing heavier. As her head nodded, Chang Xile leaned against the tree beside her and closed her eyes.
After several dozen minutes, a bright light appeared in the dark woods. It was not the return of fireflies, but the eyes of some forest creatures watching eagerly.
However, for some reason, they couldn't get close.
After a long stalemate with the unknown in the darkness, these creatures left reluctantly.
Chang Xile was woken by being licked. She opened her eyes and felt an itch on her palm. Looking down, she found a snow-white cat with blue eyes lying beside her, licking her palm.
"Why are you here?" Chang Xile raised her hand and touched its head. The kitten's body temperature made her feel real. She blinked, still a little dazed, and couldn't help wondering: Was I dreaming just now?
The fog had just dissipated, and the moon had emerged from behind the clouds. After recovering, Chang Xile slowly stood up, holding onto the tree trunk. Seeing this, the kitten also stood up slowly and strolled forward, heading in the exact direction the weasel had pointed.
Chang Xi was so happy that he decided to follow the kitten and actually found the way back to the moon-viewing platform.
When she was completely enveloped by the moonlight, the guiding cat disappeared again.
Chang Xile looked around and saw that everyone had already fallen asleep, even the few who claimed to be night owls were snoring. Chang Xile quietly returned to his tent, took out his phone, and checked the time. He realized it was already four o'clock in the morning.
It seems that she really slept for a long time.
Chang Xile frowned, feeling even more that she had just dreamed. Perhaps it was just the pain from the tree trunk that had given her a headache, hence the nightmare. Even though she had clearly woken up from a nap, Chang Xile still felt exhausted. She clutched her chest, feeling a palpitation.
When she quietly entered the tent and planned to take a nap, she found that something was wrong with the person in the sleeping bag on the other side.
Compared to the senior, this person seems too tall.
Chang Xile slightly lifted the curtain and looked at the man's face in the moonlight.
This is Chen Moxin. He has his eyes closed, soundly sleeping.
Chang Xile's bag and cell phone were in this tent, and she was very sure that she had not walked into the wrong tent.
So what's going on?
Even if Chen Moxin went to the wrong tent, where did the senior go?
Chang Xile frowned, wanting to confirm something. She gently stuffed her luggage into the sleeping bag and covered her head with a coat. At first glance, she thought there was someone lying in the sleeping bag.
Then, she simply left the group and walked back to the woods. She found a tree on the edge of the forest to lean against. Although her eyelids felt heavy, she resisted falling asleep. She forced herself to open her camera, intending to review the results of the past day's field trip.
Upon seeing this, Chang Xile's hands trembled.
What comes into view is the back of a person in the fog.
It is a bit inappropriate to call it a human. The thing looked only as tall as a little boy of seven or eight years old. It was wearing ill-fitting long-sleeved shirt and trousers, and the neck under the collar, which should have been smooth, was covered with a circle of fuzz.
"Do I look like a human?"
This strange question lingered in Chang Xile's mind again, and she clearly realized that it was not a dream at all. Moreover, she realized even more clearly that perhaps she should not answer it at all.
…
The next morning was a clear one, the sun shone brightly on the earth, and the cicadas were still chirping.
Someone got up early on purpose. She stretched, slowly walked to a tent in the center of the venue, and lifted the corner of the curtain.
Seeing the two people in the sleeping bags so close to each other, she covered her mouth and whispered, "Senior Mo Xin, why are you sleeping with our junior Xile?"
It was a low whisper, but the sound was loud enough to wake several people nearby. There were rustling sounds coming from other tents, and someone poked their head out, looked at Lin Yue, who was covering her mouth, and whispered about what she had just said.
Chen Moxin slowly opened his eyes. When he first woke up, his eyes lacked their usual warmth, appearing rather cold. His right hand was still resting on the other side of his sleeping bag. He closed his eyes, seemingly trying to process what was happening.
I subconsciously tightened my right arm, but the feeling was strange.
Chen Moxin opened her eyes. Ah, something seemed wrong.
However, before he could stop Lin Yue, she continued in an exaggerated tone: "Xile sister, come out quickly, did you walk into the wrong tent? Even if you have a good relationship with the senior, you shouldn't stay together all night..."
As they listened to her ambiguous words, the whispers around them grew louder.
"What are you talking about?" The expected voice came from a completely unexpected direction. The crowd looked in the direction of the voice and saw the beautiful girl with short hair stretching and slowly walking out of the woods. She blinked and looked at Lin Yue's wonderful expression.
Chen Moxin lifted the jacket from his sleeping bag, and naturally, there was no one inside. He curled the corners of his lips, not knowing what he was thinking.
"You...how could that be?" Lin Yue was obviously a little bit incredulous.
"I got lost in the woods last night and never came back. My senior sister didn't even notice me. But you didn't even see my face this morning, yet you concluded that the person in the sleeping bag was me. How did you recognize someone, and why did you conclude that I was wrong?" For the first time, Chang Xile's round eyes lost their smile. She stared coldly at the speechless Lin Yue.
The classmates who were so close last night now looked like indifferent spectators. They were just getting excited as if they had just caught some big news.
Chang Xile looked around and suddenly felt bored. She walked straight through the crowd to the central tent and quickly picked up her bag and coat. As she leaned over to pick up her coat, she inevitably made eye contact with Chen Moxin.
The other person seemed to have finally woken up, his eyes filled with smiles again, and he didn't seem confused or panicked at all about sleeping in a tent where he shouldn't be.
"Sorry." Chen Moxin stared into Chang Xile's eyes. He had always thought her round eyes resembled a cat's, and they were very beautiful. But now, her eyes were filled with anger, and she had transformed from a domesticated cat into a temperamental wild cat, which made him feel itchy. "Maybe I went back to the wrong tent after getting up last night."
He said sorry, but there was no apology in his tone.
I don't know if someone is innocent or not, so I just don't feel like responding to the insincere apology.
She pulled her hand away, slung her backpack over her shoulder, and announced in a voice loud enough for everyone to hear, "I'm quitting the photography club."
I thought it was a group of people with similar interests getting together to exchange experiences, but it seems that is not the case.
Just because you are two years older and two grades higher, do you really think that university is some small society full of intrigue and schemes, and you can bully others by relying on your so-called qualifications?
Chang Xile had no interest in slapping anyone in the face, winning over people, or striving to rise to the top of so-called small society. Once you fight someone, you're drawn into their system of evaluation, and from then on, there's no winning or losing; you'll just become birds of a feather.
So the best way is to make them disappear from your life.
When it was daybreak, she walked straight down the mountain.
Chen Moxin looked at her from behind, but seemed quite interested: "See you again if we're lucky, classmate Chang Xile."
