Chapter Sixty-Two: The Mermaid Baby Makes a Swimming Bet

The dark-skinned little boy didn't answer her question. Instead, he looked her up and down and asked in a less-than-friendly tone, "Are you that Wanwan?"

She pursed her lips and nodded.

Before anyone could say anything, Wan Yuekui and Wan Yuechi outside came out upon hearing the noise.

"He Yong? What are you doing here?" Wan Yuekui spoke first.

He seemed surprised that it was him who had come, hence the hint of astonishment in his voice.

He Yong's family lived at the very front of Lanhai Village, separated from the Wan family by more than half a village, and the two families' parents rarely met.

But we'll still say hello if we bump into each other.

Because the two families lived quite far apart, Wan Yuekui and Wan Yuechi didn't really hang out with He Yong much.

So when He Yong came to their door today, it really surprised the two children.

“I didn’t come here to see either of you,” He Yong said.

He pointed at Baili Wanwan, a hint of disdain in his eyes. "I'm here to see this little kid."

"He Yong! Watch your words! Wanwan is our little sister!" Wan Yuekui's face showed a hint of displeasure when he heard him say that.

He Yong ignored all of that, instead looking Baili Wanwan up and down before asking, "You're the little girl who can stay underwater for two hours?"

At this point, he chuckled and added, "You're just bragging!"

He looked at him with disdain: "You're so short and thin, how could you possibly be as powerful as the rumors say..."

He Yong said this with a hint of disappointment on his dark face: "It was such a waste of my time."

Baili Wanwan did not understand what He Yong meant by saying this.

Because she didn't know him, and didn't know what he meant by coming to her door to say all this.

But Wan Yuekui, who was standing to the side, sensed a hidden meaning in He Yong's words.

So he immediately retorted, "What? You still think you'll always be the best swimmer in the village?"

He paused, a hint of pride creeping onto his face, and deliberately said to He Yong, "Wanwan is definitely better than you. If you're so capable, why don't you stay underwater for two hours? If you can't, don't come here to humiliate yourself!"

"You!" He Yong was enraged by Wan Yuekui's words.

He was angry for a while, but then calmed himself down and said to Wan Yuekui, "No one can stay underwater for two hours. You and your sister are liars. I don't believe you!"

Wan Yuekui and He Yong started arguing at the door.

The loud noise attracted many children from the neighborhood.

Everyone stood aside watching the spectacle, when a child who couldn't stand it suddenly shouted, "If you want to know who's the best, let He Yong and Wanwan have a competition!"

Upon hearing this, many of the children who had been watching couldn't help but clap and agree, "That's right! Let's have a competition! Let's have a competition!"

Before Wanwan came to Wanjia, all the children in the village knew that He Yong was the best swimmer among them.

He Yong has always been very proud of his swimming skills.

It's now rumored that Wanwan's swimming skills are better than many adults.

He Yong was naturally very unwilling.

So, amidst the urging of a group of children, he agreed without a second thought.

"Let's have a competition! Who's afraid of who!"

Actually, He Yong ran to Wan's doorstep today because he was very dissatisfied and wanted to have a swimming competition with Wanwan.

The thought of his prized skill being taken away by someone else made He Yong feel very uncomfortable.

Seeing that He Yong agreed so readily, some of the other kids who liked Wanwan shouted, "He Yong! You're two or three generations older than Wanwan! Why are you in such a hurry to compete with her in swimming? You're not only bullying a little kid, you're bullying a little girl!"

"That's right! Everyone in our Blue Ocean Village knows that you, He Yong, are the best swimmer! Even the number one can't beat a kid!"

Laughter erupted from the crowd.

Even with his thick skin, He Yong's face still turned red from the comments.

But because his skin is darker, others can't see the red spots.

Even though everyone else had said that, he didn't intend to leave. Instead, he lowered his head and stubbornly asked Wanwan, "Do you dare to compete?"

There's nothing Taiwan dares to compare itself to or not dare to compare itself to.

There's nothing wrong with competing, but she's not really interested in these kinds of competitions.

Swimming competitions are less appealing than going home to cook.

So she looked at He Yong calmly and said in a low voice, "I admit, you are better than me, you are number one!"

She asked very seriously, "Does that mean we don't need to compete?"

Baili Wanwan was actually speaking from the heart. Winning or losing, being number one, are all just titles given to us by others.

She didn't like it. So she genuinely wanted to give the title to He Yong.

But what she didn't know was that her unintentional words were interpreted by He Yong as mockery.

As Baili Wanwan watched He Yong's expression grow increasingly angry, she clenched her fists tightly.

"I don't need your acknowledgment!! I'm better than you!! Are you mocking me?!"

Baili Wanwan was terrified by his roar and stood frozen in place, blinking her innocent eyes at He Yong: "I didn't..."

But He Yong was no longer listening to anything anyone said.

He felt insulted by Baili Wanwan, so he insisted that she compete with him in swimming.

Baili Wanwan tried to persuade him several times to no avail. Seeing his firm attitude, she had no choice but to agree.

"Alright, let's have a competition then..."

He Yong's emotions calmed down a little, but his expression was still not very friendly when he looked at Baili Wanwan.

"You agreed to this yourself, so don't blame me if you lose or something goes wrong!"

Baili Wanwan looked annoyed.

I thought to myself, "Isn't this something you insisted I agree to by begging and pleading?"

It's like I'm the one who's trying to compete with you.

Although she was somewhat unwilling, Baili Wanwan didn't say anything.

He just nodded vaguely.

He Yong then set the time for three days later.

After giving some instructions, he turned and left angrily.

Wan Yuekui watched He Yong's impolite back and muttered under his breath, "What's wrong with this guy..."

"Big brother, don't worry about him, let's go home."

That night, after dinner, the group sat in the courtyard to enjoy the cool air. Living by the sea, the moon seemed so close, almost within reach, large and bright.

Wan Yuekui and Baili Wanwan were talking about what happened during the day.

Just as they were getting into it, they noticed a figure standing behind them, who had been there for who knows how long.

Wan Yuekui was startled and turned around to find Wan Suizhou pursing her lips, her expression indescribable.

He appeared calm and composed, yet more solemn than usual.

"grandfather……"

The three children weakly called out Wan Suizhou's name.
