Chapter 28 Marriage Application

“She didn’t mention you at all in her letter,” Zhou Jinshan said calmly.

Lu Xiangqian was dumbfounded. Political Commissar Lin was exasperated: "Zhou Jinshan was clearly bluffing you. How could you be so easily defeated? You gave up so easily! You're both my students, how can there be such a huge difference? If this were during the War of Resistance..."

Guessing what Political Commissar Lin was about to say, Lu Xiangqian interrupted, "If this were during the War of Resistance, and I were captured by those little devils, I wouldn't wait for them to interrogate me; I'd end my own life first!"

Zhou Jinshan: "..."

Political Commissar Lin: "..."

Commissar Lin waved his hand wearily: "Let's not talk about the War of Resistance. You called me early this morning saying you wanted to complain. Go ahead and complain."

Zhou Jinshan raised his eyelids and glanced at Lu Xiangqian, who was almost in tears: "Political Commissar, I won't sue anymore. I was the one who dragged things down, but there is something I still need to explain to you."

Political Commissar Lin: "Go on."

"The woman Zhou Jinshan is pursuing comes from a capitalist background."

Despite Zhou Jinshan's cold gaze, Lu Xiangqian still spoke up. Since Zhou Jinshan had tricked him once, he would repay him in kind.

"Is that so?" Political Commissar Lin turned to Zhou Jinshan, his expression grave.

Zhou Jinshan stood up abruptly, but Political Commissar Lin waved his hand and said, "Sit down and talk."

But Zhou Jinshan insisted: "Political Commissar, I'd rather stand up and say it."

"Comrade Feng is indeed from a capitalist background, but as far as I know, the Feng family has long since severed ties with their overseas relatives, and their businesses have been transformed into joint public-private enterprises. They belong to the reformed masses, so I don't think this will affect my relationship with her."

After listening, Political Commissar Lin stood up and said seriously, "Political considerations are sometimes not so simple. If you insist on marrying her, it might affect your future. Can you bear such a consequence?"

Without the slightest hesitation, Zhou Jinshan answered loudly, "I can!"

"Are you really sure?" the political commissar asked again.

“I’ve thought it through,” Zhou Jinshan nodded affirmatively, a rare, youthful smile appearing on his face. “Political Commissar, I didn’t have any lofty ideals when I joined the army; I just wanted to have enough to eat. Now that I can get married, I’m content.”

"Truly content?"

“I am truly content. Comrade Feng is a city girl with a high school education, while I am just a country boy. The number of characters I learned in the army is only a few baskets. If I can marry Comrade Feng, that would be my blessing. Even if I have to retire from the army and go back to farm, I can still support my wife and children with the strength I gained in the army. I'm just afraid that the girl will look down on me and won't marry me.”

Political Commissar Lin was displeased: "What's there to complain about about her? You may not be well-educated, but you're good at fighting. Without us soldiers holding the line, would these capitalists be able to live a peaceful life in the rear?"

"Yes, the political commissar is right, Lao Zhou, you don't need to back down." Lu Xiangqian flattered him, and even when Zhou Jinshan's gaze swept over him, Lao Lu did not change his tune. Anyway, he was just shouting slogans, so if he had the guts, he could go and confront the political commissar.

Zhou Jinshan ignored Lu Xiangqian, who had straightened his back, and smiled apologetically at the political commissar: "Political commissar, actually Comrade Feng left me a letter last night. In the letter, she analyzed the difference in our status and said that she was afraid of dragging me down. She also thought that my marriage application would not be approved at all, so she proposed to break up with me. She was thinking of me. I can't fool her. So I thought that I should solve the current difficulties before I can talk to other girls again."

Political Commissar Lin finally understood: "Good lad, you've been waiting for me here."

"Political Commissar, what about my marriage application..."

"Write it down and submit it first. Whether it gets approved or not... we'll discuss it later!"
