Chapter 63 Why does he still like self-torture? ...
In the early morning, Shang Shu woke up in the second bedroom. She had been called by Gu Sui several times last night but hadn't gotten up and hadn't eaten dinner. She was also woken up thirsty in the middle of the night and pitifully got up to drink a glass of water.
Shang Shu turned her head to look. Gu Sui was still asleep, his breathing even and calm. His hand was still on her waist under her nightgown, holding her tightly but not too tightly. She stared at the beauty's sleeping face for a while, and sighed for the ten thousandth time in her heart, "How can this person be so beautiful even when he is sleeping?"
Whether it was from taking a nap or not, Shang Shu felt a slight headache. She had always suffered from migraines, and the mechanisms that caused them were bizarre and unpredictable, with no discernible pattern.
Sleeping too much or too little can cause pain. Sun exposure or cold wind can also cause pain. Too much noise, stuffiness, or bright light can all trigger pain randomly, and it is especially severe around menstruation.
I've had a thorough check-up, but they found nothing wrong. It's just that I have naturally sensitive nerves, and there's no better solution.
Shang Shu sat up quietly, leaning against the headboard. She closed her eyes and rubbed her temples, thinking that straightening up and resting might be the reason for the discomfort after lying down for too long.
"What's wrong?" Gu Sui's voice, just after waking up, came through the phone; his slightly hoarse, lazy tone sounded quite sexy.
"It's okay." Shang Shu pressed her hand twice more, then took it off and glanced at the time. "It's still early, let's sleep a little longer."
Gu Sui frowned and sat up as well: "Do you have a headache?"
She had just seen Shang Shu's actions and remembered that people do have this problem. Back in Aicheng, they always kept water and painkillers by their bedside so that if they had a flare-up in the middle of the night, they wouldn't have to toss and turn or run downstairs to get help.
"It doesn't hurt too badly," Shang Shu comforted her.
She was fine at first, but the moment she stretched her head to check the time, half of her head started throbbing with pain when she came back. However, she didn't want Gu Sui to worry.
"I'll go get the medicine." Gu Sui said, about to lift the covers and get out of bed. Since the two of them had always lived in the master bedroom, the medicine was kept in the bedside table in the master bedroom.
"Hey... no need." Shang Shu tried her best to keep her upper body steady and reached out to tug at Gu Sui's arm. "Aren't we going for a check-up later? I think we should wait and not eat."
Gu Sui paused, thinking that this made sense, and felt a little troubled. But when she looked at the little girl who was hesitant to move, she knew that the situation must be more serious than people said.
She frowned and said, "Take your medicine first, we'll go for the check-up another day."
"It's okay, everything's settled." Shang Shu blinked. She knew that Gu Sui was always worried about her health and wanted to finish the check-up as soon as possible to put his mind at ease.
"I only feel a little pain." She hooked Gu Sui's finger and laughed, "I guess it's because I was pinched a bit too hard yesterday."
Shang Shu deliberately made a joke at Gu Sui's expense, and this worked; Gu Sui's expression indeed softened somewhat.
"Then let's go there as soon as possible." Gu Sui hooked Shang Shu's hand back, feeling a little sorry for her.
"good."
Since they were already up, the two of them simply washed up, tidied themselves up quickly, and set off.
Gu Sui got into the car and reclined the passenger seat, thinking that Shang Shu could lie down and rest more comfortably.
She drove smoothly the whole way, and when she encountered bumps, she would deliberately drive slowly. She would take advantage of the time while waiting at red lights to turn her head and look at Shang Shu's face from time to time.
Her feelings were actually a bit complicated, because she could sense that Shang Shu was different in these matters than before. In the past, when Shang Shu bumped into something or had a headache or fever, she would cling to her and act coquettishly, but now she always said "I'm fine".
Gu Sui knew the girl was afraid of worrying her, but this change also made her feel guilty. It made her think that it must be because of the pain of the past three years and her absence that Shang Shu had subconsciously pretended to be strong and become used to silently enduring it alone.
Shang Shu didn't close her eyes. Sensitive as she was, she noticed the abnormality when she saw the silence of the person next to her, the slightly white knuckles, and the tightly gripped steering wheel. She straightened her seat and sat down next to Gu Sui.
"Are you feeling unwell?" Gu Sui asked anxiously when she saw Shang Shu sit up. She was worried that Shang Shu was either carsick or feeling nauseous from the pain.
She remembered one year in Aicheng, when Shang Shu was in severe pain at night. She took painkillers twice, but they didn't help much. Later, she vomited for a long time while hugging the toilet before she could finally fall asleep in her arms. At that time, all she could do was tidy up Shang Shu's hair, pat Shang Shu's back gently, and then pour her a glass of warm water.
That feeling of heartache and helplessness surged up again, and Gu Sui gripped the steering wheel even tighter.
"No, don't be so nervous about me." It was another red light. Shang Shu turned her head to smooth out the wrinkles between Gu Sui's brows and said with a smile, "This is the second time I've sat in the passenger seat as your girlfriend. I didn't even have a chance to really enjoy it last time."
She knew Gu Sui liked to hear this, and it was indeed the truth. Gu Sui was a very pleasing sight to behold when he drove, with his hair tucked behind his ears, his brows furrowed as he focused intently on the road, and his slender, bony fingers. She had thought so ever since the first time she rode in his car.
Gu Sui gave a slight smile: "Tell me if you feel unwell, okay?"
It wasn't "good or bad," but "do you know?" Shang Shu could tell the difference; she knew Gu Sui was worried and anxious.
"I will," Shang Shu replied softly, leaning back on her headrest.
Arriving at the Gu Family Medical Center again, Shang Shu stared blankly at the stone steps at the entrance. She thought about how the last time the two of them stood here, their relationship wasn't very good, but now it had come to this.
"Come on, let's walk slowly."
Watching Gu Sui get out of the car from the other end, walk around to her side, and extend his hand to her, it didn't sound like she had a headache, but rather like she was lame. Shang Shu wanted to laugh a little: "Are you comforting a child?"
Gu Sui took Shang Shu's hand and squeezed it twice: "Yes, someone once said that I'm good at coaxing people."
"Oh." Shang Shu took a step forward and tucked a corner of her lips into her mouth. "Then why weren't there any flowers this time?"
Gu Sui paused slightly, then smiled and led the person up the steps: "Yes, we'll go buy it in a bit, you can choose it yourself, okay?"
Shang Shu was joking, but seeing that Gu Sui seemed to be in a good mood, she went along with it and didn't refuse.
This time, Shang Shu underwent almost every possible examination. Apart from mild anemia and a slightly low immunity, there were no other major problems.
However, she was still worried about Gu Sui. Even though she later learned that Gu Sui had just had a stomach check-up, Shang Shu still dragged her to have some other tests done, including weight and diet, nutrition and metabolism. Fortunately, all the assessment results were normal.
Not only that, Shang Shu also repeatedly confirmed with the doctor about possible long-term postoperative problems and the precautions to take in daily life in response to these situations before she felt at ease.
“Raw, cold, spicy, fried, and deep-fried foods—you have to be especially careful with all of these, as well as strong tea, coffee, and alcohol…” Mentioning alcohol, Shang Shu’s face turned cold with lingering fear. “You absolutely can’t do that again. No, you can’t touch any alcohol at all.”
Looking at the little girl's serious expression, Gu Sui felt both warmed and speechless, almost forgetting who was bringing whom for the checkup.
"Okay, I won't touch it." Gu Sui agreed seriously, then reached out and smoothed Shang Shu's stray hairs, asking, "Does your head still hurt?"
Shang Shu's expression warmed up. She shook her head, saying that she had taken the medicine right after the examination and was already feeling fine.
The two went to a flower shop as agreed. The flowers were plentiful and fresh, and Shang Shu immediately took a liking to a bouquet of Ice Beauty flowers.
"What's wrong? Don't you like it?" Shang Shu looked at the white and pink lilies in her hand, and then noticed Gu Sui's indescribable expression, feeling puzzled.
Aren't these flowers quite pretty?
Gu Sui's expression was indifferent, and he pursed his lips somewhat awkwardly: "Buy it if you like it."
Holding the flowers, Gu Sui didn't say much, but held the other person's hand, his steps even quickening unconsciously.
Shang Shu was left like a kite, thankful that she was wearing flat shoes, but after thinking for a long time, she still couldn't figure out what was going on.
Back in the car, Gu Sui didn't seem to have any intention of leaving immediately. She hesitated for a moment before turning around to face Shang Shu.
She thought this matter would be like a stone sinking to the bottom of the sea, never to be mentioned again in her life. But since the young girl had seen through the clues, Gu Sui did not intend to hide it. Being unclear would only leave a knot in each other's hearts.
"Tell me about it?" Shang Shu knew that Gu Sui had something to say, so she put the flowers aside, brought up the topic, and quietly looked at Gu Sui's face.
Gu Sui lowered his eyes and took a few breaths, his brows furrowing slightly involuntarily: "Do you still remember the day I accompanied you to see Liang Wanzhi?"
Although she didn't know why that day was suddenly brought up, Shang Shu nodded and waited for the person to continue.
“I dropped you off at the company, and after leaving, I actually came back.” Gu Sui kept his head down, staring at his clasped fingers as he spoke.
"I knew you weren't in a good mood that day, so I went to the nearby florist and bought some flowers, thinking that seeing them might cheer you up. But then I saw you with..."
Gu Sui paused for a moment, frowned, took a deep breath with some impatience, and continued in a different word: "I saw you eating together, and you were smiling happily. Later, I couldn't help but call you, but you said you were busy."
Shang Shu's eyes welled up with tears, and her heart ached. She understood.
"Gu Sui." She called his name softly and took his hand. "I'm sorry."
Seeing Shang Shu apologize, Gu Sui was about to speak when he was stopped by someone.
"I'm sorry I didn't manage my emotions well back then. Although I was angry that you kept it from me, I shouldn't have treated you like that without saying anything, and I shouldn't have lied to you, so I apologize to you."
Shang Shu moistened her lips and continued, "As for Ji Songning, I don't want to hide it from you. She did confess to me that day, but she knew that the person I liked was you, so she took the initiative to suggest that we could only be friends. So there's nothing between us. Is this explanation okay?"
"A-Shu..." Gu Sui gently embraced Shang Shu, murmuring her name.
Shang Shu rested her chin on the crook of Gu Sui's neck and patted his back as she hugged him back: "So the one you picked for me that day was also an ice beauty?"
"Um."
"It seems that we have pretty similar aesthetic tastes."
"Um."
"Why did you only say 'hmm'?" Shang Shu laughed and gently released the person. "What about the flowers? Did you throw them away in a fit of anger?"
Gu Sui shook his head: "We put them in a vase on the water's edge, but they withered in no time."
Shang Shu touched Gu Sui's face, finding it both funny and cute: "You were heartbroken, yet you took it back and look at it every day. How can you enjoy self-torture?"
Gu Sui thought about it and felt a little silly. She couldn't help but smile. Her gaze moved down to Shang Shu's lips, and her eyes gradually warmed up.
