“Then, after I came here last time, when I was sleeping with my wife at home, I suddenly heard footsteps outside the door. I went to turn on the lamp, and the light bulb suddenly exploded, which is why it's like this now.” Yang Zizhong took a big gulp of tea and caught his breath.
“I’ve already had my family move out. I know she’s here to see me, but I don’t know what she wants. Last night I didn’t go home; I had Dayong drive me here. Then I saw her sitting in the back seat in the rearview mirror. I turned around, but there was nothing there!”
"What did you see her like?" Bai Hao secretly grasped Qin Nan's hand. The child was already ice-cold all over, but she still wouldn't leave. Her curiosity was really strong!
If Qin Nan knew what Bai Hao was thinking, she would definitely want to cry. At first, she was curious, but later she was afraid. There was no one in the backyard except for Totoro. At least there were several people in the front yard.
Adding to the feeling he got from the well site these past few days, he was now truly pale-faced, clutching Bai Hao's hand tightly as if grasping at a straw.
When Yang Zizhong heard Bai Hao's question, his face turned pale. It was clear that he really didn't want to recall it, but with life and death at stake, he still silently thought for a moment before describing it.
"His hair was disheveled, his face was pale, he stared at me expressionlessly, his eyes were dark, and his body looked wet, with water in his hair."
"She drowned?" Bai Hao asked with certainty.
“Yes…” Yang Zizhong’s eyes darted around.
Bai Hao didn't say anything this time, but remained silent for a while, seemingly lost in thought.
Bai Hao: "I've accepted this commission. I'll go take a look tomorrow. I'll need Mr. Yang's cooperation then."
"Of course!" Yang Zizhong breathed a sigh of relief, fearing that Bai Hao might change his mind, and quickly agreed.
Bai Hao squeezed Qin Nan's hand, signaling him to let go. Qin Nan came to his senses and released Bai Hao. Bai Hao took out a power of attorney from the bookcase in the left room. Unlike the contract given to Qin Nan, this was a normal contract.
Then he took another pen and filled in the prepayment amount, the final payment, and the total amount in the blank space on the contract. After signing it, he handed both copies of the contract to Yang Zizhong.
Yang Zizhong glanced at it, signed it directly, handed one copy to Bai Hao, and had his bodyguard Da Yong behind him put away the other copy.
"Okay, Qin Nan, see Mr. Yang out." Bai Hao put away the contract and said to Qin Nan.
Yang Zizhong: "Um, Boss Bai..."
Bai Hao: "Mr. Yang, is there anything else?"
Yang Zizhong: "You're coming tomorrow, so, then tonight?"
"Mr. Yang wants some security?" Bai Hao asked with a cryptic smile.
"Yes." Yang Zizhong hesitated a bit; it was clear he hadn't had a proper rest in a long time.
Bai Hao took out a white chess piece from his trouser pocket; it looked quite ordinary.
"Just carry it with you. If you feel unsafe, there's a Taoist temple in the west of the city. It's quite large and you can stay overnight. My home is too small to stay overnight. Come pick us up tomorrow morning." With that, Bai Hao tossed the chess piece to Yang Zizhong.
"Good, good!" Yang Zizhong was initially skeptical when he saw the white chess piece, since no one would use it as a talisman. But when he heard that there was a Taoist temple, he happily accepted the white chess piece, said goodbye to the two, and headed to the Taoist temple.
Qin Nan saw the two off and then returned to the backyard. Bai Hao was playing a match-3 game on his tablet. This was a game Qin Nan had downloaded to help Bai Hao pass the time and stop him from staring at him cooking in the kitchen. Unexpectedly, Bai Hao was quite interested in it.
Qin Nan remembered glancing at the amount written on Bai Hao's contract. It was so expensive for just one order, yet Yang Zizhong signed it directly, and the contract looked perfectly normal.
But why doesn't he remember having a contract in there? And where did the pen come from? And how is Bai Hao going to handle this? This should be considered a paranormal event!
Qin Nan had too many questions, but looking at Bai Hao's calm and composed demeanor, she didn't know where to begin.
Bai Hao: "The osmanthus flowers are blooming!"
Qin Nan: "Huh?"
Bai Hao: "You said you wanted to make osmanthus cake."
Qin Nan: "...Hmm, let's make lunch first, then osmanthus cake in the afternoon. Do you want some alcohol?"
Bai Hao: "Osmanthus wine?"
Qin Nan: "Mhm."
Bai Hao: "Yes!"
Bai Hao continued playing Candy Crush. The totoro in the nearby villa heard about the food, poked its head out, and meowed loudly at Qin Nan, indicating that it wanted some too.
Qin Nan smiled and pinched the chubby body of the Totoro. The Totoro looked much fatter than before. Qin Nan considered controlling the Totoro's diet because the Totoro was too heavy to carry on his shoulder now, weighing at least fifteen or sixteen pounds!
Qin Nan made a little less for lunch because, in addition to osmanthus cake, she also wanted to make some almond candy in the afternoon.
Bai Hao never took back the wallet after giving it to Qin Nan. He had no use for it, as Qin Nan took care of all his daily necessities. As for expenses, Bai Hao didn't care at all; he was never short of money.
After having lunch, Qin Nan went to the vegetable garden behind the house to get a ladder and pick osmanthus flowers.
The vegetable garden had been cleared long ago, and Qin Nan focused on sowing cabbage seeds and some potatoes, but they wouldn't be ready to eat until winter.
Qin Nan picked a lot of osmanthus flowers with a bamboo basket, washed and dried them, processed the glutinous rice flour, and froze the bamboo tubes she bought in the refrigerator to make almond candy.
After several busy hours, the aroma of osmanthus cake filled the house. Bai Hao put down his tablet, got up and went to the kitchen. Totoro was already eating a piece of osmanthus cake that Qin Nan had let cool. Bai Hao took away a plate of it. Qin Nan held down the excited Totoro and gave him a small plate. Only then did Totoro calm down and continue eating the cake.
Qin Nan calmed the two children down, took the previously cooled almond candy out of the bamboo tube, cut it into pieces, brewed some tea, and handed one piece to Bai Hao. The totoro couldn't eat almond candy because it was too sugary and would make him gain weight!
Qin Nan put down her apron, washed her hands, slumped onto the sofa, and turned to look at Bai Hao, who was seriously eating and drinking tea.
Qin Nan: "Boss, is everything Yang Zizhong said true?"
Bai Hao: "Mm."
Qin Nan: "How do you know if it's true or false?"
Bai Hao: "I guessed."
Qin Nan: "...So, are we really going tomorrow?"
Bai Hao: "Hmm...or you can stay and watch the house?"
Qin Nan: "Sure! Totoro will keep me company and watch the house!"
Qin Nan decisively stayed. What Yang Zizhong said was too scary. He didn't want to face that female ghost. He was easily scared to death!
Bai Hao, munching on a pastry, turned to look at Qin Nan, who was huddled in the corner of the sofa hugging a cushion. He smiled and then suddenly pointed behind Qin Nan.
Qin Nan was stunned, her face turned pale, she threw down the pillow and pounced on Bai Hao, hugging him and looking back, only to find nothing there, while Bai Hao beside her laughed heartily.
"Bai Hao!" Qin Nan's face turned red with anger. She got up and went to the kitchen to play with the Totoro, ignoring Bai Hao.
