Chapter 38 His embrace ended in emptiness, leaving him wanting more.
Outside the door, another pair of not-so-genuine siblings sat silently on the sofa. When they heard the door open, they both looked up.
"Aren't you going to take them away?" Meng Henian asked.
Tan Zhaojing: "No, thank you."
He looked at Meng Jinxi alone and said, "Take good care of Zaoyi. I'll come again tomorrow morning."
Meng Jinxi made an OK sign with her fingers, "Don't worry."
Meng Henian went out with Tan Zhaojing. He had just drunk alcohol and couldn't drive, so he squeezed into Tan Zhaojing's passenger seat.
There's no need to beat around the bush with him: "Have you already met Zaoyi?"
After a moment of silence, Tan Zhaojing hummed in agreement. He had conducted background checks on his father, including on Zaoyi, after learning that his father was considering remarriage.
I first met her at a dessert shop outside Kyoto University.
As evening approached, the sky was ablaze with rosy hues, painting half the horizon crimson. She sat in a wicker chair in the café’s courtyard, her long hair draped lazily over her shoulders. As the wind blew by, a few strands of hair brushed against her face. It was cherry blossom season, and pink petals fluttered down, covering her completely.
That scene looked like a painting to anyone who saw it.
Passersby would stop, but she didn't notice at all. She was holding her phone horizontally, and she smiled so hard that her eyes narrowed. She probably sensed that someone was watching her, and she turned her head away.
I looked into his eyes across the setting sun.
His eyes sparkled.
As for that night, it was an accident.
He found it too noisy and found an empty private room, but a reckless guy barged in and clung to her restlessly. As if sensing that he was about to throw her out, she clung tightly to his clothes.
She raised her head, her eyes wide with fear, like a startled deer in the forest, and cried out, "Help me..."
It was these eyes that made him recognize her; her eyes were red with desire.
Perhaps a single wrong thought can lead to being bewitched.
But he had to admit one thing: that night, his embrace ended in emptiness, and he felt unsatisfied.
"Have you thought it through?" Meng Henian suddenly looked over. "Not to mention your dad and Aunt Ming, how will you get past your grandfather?"
The car was silent.
When he spoke again, Tan Zhaojing's tone turned somewhat cold, "That's beyond our control."
Meng Henian raised his eyebrows slightly, turned his gaze to the neon lights outside the car, and repeated thoughtfully, "Is it not my choice?"
It sounded like a rhetorical question, yet also like a soliloquy.
Tan Zhaojing heard this, tilted his head, paused for a moment, and then looked back.
...
The hangover left Lin Zaoyi feeling dizzy and disoriented the next day. She pressed her forehead and slowly got up. After washing up, Xi Xi pushed her way in and handed her a glass of water. "Do you still remember?"
She keenly caught something in those words, her brow furrowing slightly as fragmented memories vaguely flashed through her mind.
It seems like she cursed Tan Zhaojing, and then bit him... I don't quite remember what she said.
Lin Zaoyi drank a whole glass of water to calm herself down. "Why did Brother Zhaojing come to your house?"
Good question.
Meng Jinxi took the initiative to admit her mistake, saying, "I called him while you were drunk, intending for you to vent, and you did just that, yelling at him over the phone."
Lin Zaoyi felt like she was listening to a horror story.
Xi Xi added, "He was probably worried about you, so Brother Zhaojing came over last night. Who knew you were so resentful? You bit Brother Zhaojing. I don't know what happened after that. I closed the door."
Lin Zaoyi grew increasingly terrified as she listened, wanting not only to strangle herself but also to kill her. "Why didn't you stop me??? Why did you call Tan Zhaojing?!"
"Isn't this to let you vent your anger?"
She wailed, her knees buckled, and she collapsed onto the bed, "Xixi, you've ruined me... Brother Zhaojing will kill me..."
"No, Brother Zhaojing told me to take good care of you."
Lin Zaoyi took it as empty talk and waved her hand, "Hurry up and leave, I'm afraid I won't be able to help but beat you up."
Meng Jinxi didn't say half of what she had said: Zhaojing had been happy with everything Zaoyi had done last night.
The doorbell rang. Thinking it must be Brother Zhaojing, I peeked through the peephole and saw it was him.
Zhaojing handed over a bag. "Breakfast."
Thank you!
When Tan Zhaojing entered the second bedroom, he saw a woman sprawled out on her back with a blanket over her face, muttering something that sounded both sad and resentful.
He reached out and lifted it.
Lin Zaoyi thought it was Xixi, so she slapped her to get revenge for taking matters into her own hands.
Snap—
A clear voice rang in her ears. At the same time, after scanning who had come in, she sat up with a start. "I'm sorry, Brother Zhaojing, I thought it was Xixi!"
"What do you mean?" Meng Jinxi leaned casually against the door, arms crossed. "So I can hit them now, right?"
Raising an eyebrow, "Or are you saying I'm not as important as your sweetheart?"
Lin Zaoyi was about to explode. She glared at him and said, "Shut up!"
Meng Jinxi not only shut up, but also considerately closed the door again, saying, "You two can talk slowly, there's no rush."
Lin Zaoyi: "...???!!!"
She dug a hole and buried the girl in no time!
He forced a dry smile at the man in front of him, "Brother Zhaojing..."
Tan Zhaojing stood in front of her, his eyelids half-closed. "You remember now?"
He was tall and had a strong presence. He looked down at her from above, and since she was in the wrong, it was difficult for Lin Zaoyi to be tough. She let out two howls, like a husky that had done something wrong.
She scratched her head. "I was drunk last night..."
It's an excuse, but also a fact.
"It's okay, I'll help you remember."
As he spoke, he bent down and approached, his close presence causing her to instinctively lean back on the bed. The man's collar was slightly open, and as he leaned in, the teeth marks on his collarbone were clearly visible, turning purplish-blue overnight.
Could it be her masterpiece?
That can't be right.
But Xixi said that she did indeed bite him, which was very disrespectful.
Oh no, oh no, oh no...
While the body was still collapsing, the man slightly raised an eyebrow, a faint smile playing on his lips, "Do you remember?"
Her fragile nerves trembled.
My instinct is to distance myself from it: "How could I remember being bitten by someone else?"
Tan Zhaojing had already witnessed the girl's slanderous remarks last night, so he wasn't angry.
He countered, "Who do you think would dare to bite?"
Lin Zaoyi immediately replied, "Tan Jia Ni."
Tan Zhaojing: "She wouldn't dare."
Lin Zaoyi quickly replied, "I dare not."
Tan Zhaojing smiled slightly, "You're drunk, isn't this the first time? Should I call Meng Jinxi in so we can reminisce together?"
He casually added, "Oh, and Meng Henian too."
Lin Zaoyi was speechless, a blush creeping onto her cheeks. "No need..."
She unconsciously bit her lower lip, and just as the pain subsided, her lips were pulled off. "You bit me, fine, but why did you bite yourself? Even a dog is better than you."
She retorted instinctively, "You're the dog."
