Chapter 209 New Pet
That really was a baby bird.
It has light red downy feathers, and three slightly longer crest feathers on its head are beginning to take shape. However, the feathers on its body still look like they have just come out of their wrinkled state, with a few slight curls.
However, its two small, obsidian-like eyes were now fully open. After turning left and right, it slightly raised its head and looked this way, emitting a soft chirp.
"It seems like she sees you as her mother."
I feel like Alice is mocking me when she's talking now.
Shaking my head to shake off the unpleasant feeling, I tried gently stroking the soft back with my fingertips, then a worry crept into my mind: "Wait a minute, why give me this? I don't have the skills to take care of birds. If I were to raise this little guy, he'd die sooner or later... Wouldn't it be better to give it to Hikari to take care of?"
"Uh... wait a minute."
Alice, with her sharp eyes, hesitated for a moment, then took the bag, squinted and examined it inside. She then reached in with two fingers and pulled out a roll of paper.
"Is this the little guy's...outline?"
Alice unfolded the page with three fingers, carefully choosing her words, then shook her head and tilted her head slightly so that I could also see the words on it.
As I silently read the text in my mind, I couldn't help but frown, turning my gaze once again to the little creature that was constantly nudging my finger with its soft head: "This is actually the legendary phoenix chick?"
They actually called it a phoenix... It's a phoenix! What is a phoenix? It's a totem creature in some regions! It's almost second only to gods in terms of worship, and in the eyes of its worshippers, it's a life form with far greater significance than gods, which can be easily replaced by conquest! They even bestow many additional titles upon it.
But now, the tissue paper that came with the bird says that this little guy, who can't even unfold his feathers properly, is actually the totem creature from those legends and beliefs?
Even the cubs were surprised!
Alice shrugged and spread her hands: "Don't ask me, that's what Hui wrote. And given his meticulous and pragmatic nature, it might actually be true."
That's really too dreamy.
Before we'd even gotten very far from the starting village, a seemingly powerful older sister who was staying near our house suddenly went out for a spin and came back saying she'd brought back a pet that, once it grew up, had a high probability of surpassing the level of the final boss. Who would believe that... well, it actually seems quite possible.
I recounted the people around me and was momentarily filled with doubt.
Who exactly ruined my gaming experience? Was I playing as a Silver player against a Diamond player?
"Well, anyway, the things have already been delivered to you, and it doesn't seem convenient to return them. Why don't you keep it for now, Master?" Alice blinked and said, "Besides, this guy might be quite easy to take care of."
"How so?"
I tilted my head to look at her, puzzled.
Alice gently rubbed her chin, pondered for a moment, and then continued, "If I remember correctly, this should be a totem worshipped by the barbarians of the Crimson Flame region. They are said to live by eating fire, and their favorite thing to do is to stay in warm and fragrant places and eat delicious flames."
"Staying in a warm and fragrant place is somewhat understandable, but eating delicious flames... how can flames be distinguished as delicious or not?"
And this description sounds somewhat familiar.
"There is a saying that the hotter the flame, the better the taste."
Alice paused, then listed a second possibility: "Another theory is that the flames that have tempered a particular metal will contain some of the metal's own particles, which will then produce different colors, and these different colors represent different flavors."
"It's just that our esophagus is too fragile to easily try it, so we can't know."
It sounds like either of these theories is possible.
I nodded gently and looked down at the little guy who was once again nudging my fingers. I had this feeling that maybe he had been left with Lena for so many days and was starving.
After hesitating for a moment, I finally rubbed my index finger and thumb together, summoning magic to snap my fingers.
A cluster of bright red flames leaped from the fingertips, burning quietly on the fingertips like a candle flame in the stillness of the night.
Whether startled by the sound or the sudden scene, the little guy first shrank its neck and turned its head back. Before I could be disappointed and prepare to remove the magical flame, it eagerly reached out its beak to peck at me again.
It really happened in the blink of an eye.
Just before I was about to look away, I sensed the magic connecting the flame at my fingertips being instantly torn apart and swallowed, disappearing without a trace down my narrow esophagus.
To my surprise, I tried the same trick again, but this time the little guy didn't shrink back. Instead, he came closer with great eagerness, almost tilting his head to gently suck on my fingertips, and stretched out his two little wings with great affection to hug my right hand.
Then I made a new discovery:
As the little creature devoured the flames at an increasingly rapid pace, almost visibly, its still slightly curled feathers quickly unfurled, and new downy feathers grew in the gaps. Its hollow and fragile skeleton also received a kind of enhancement, as if it could truly draw nourishment from the flames, transforming from its initially fragile and soft state into a more solid and slightly more defined shape.
It seems to be truly growing, albeit slowly, but this change is happening right before my eyes, filled with an incredible and wonderful tactile experience.
