Niu Dazhuang was not afraid of Li Ke's gun. Instead, he waved his hand at Li Ke, who stood up straight and ignored him, looking only at the situation below.
Song Xian's voice came through the walkie-talkie: "Big brother, there are 267 healthy people and 125 patients. Among them, 97 are infected with the zombie virus, 39 have fainted, and 57 have died."
Li Ke: "Let Niu Dazhuang take them all away and arrange for them to be placed in their town."
Niu Dazhuang's voice rang out: "Young man, we don't have much food left in our town."
Li Ke ignored his complaints about being poor: "Let's keep them on with thin soup for now, observe whether there are any problems with this group before deciding whether to take them in. There's a big truck in the storage room, use it to take them down, and remember to return the truck to Song Xian."
Niu Dazhuang had been instructed by Qiu Feng beforehand, so although he was itching to talk, he held back from being sarcastic.
Li Ke met the selected representative in the reception room, still separated by a single-lens reflex mirror. The representative was a man who looked to be in his forties or fifties. He wore glasses, and the right lens of which was cracked. Even though he was covered in dust, one could still see the strong scholarly air about him.
Li Ke chose the colder voice to begin the question: "Introduce yourself first."
The other person sat very properly. Upon hearing the question, he paused for a second before speaking: "My surname is Cheng, and my full name is Cheng Chenwei. I was originally from Jiangsu Province and worked as a university professor. Later, my hometown was hit by a disaster, and I eventually made my way to a refuge in Qing City. When the Qing City refuge was halfway through the winter, there was a food shortage, which led to unrest and later splitting into several factions."
The winter passed in chaos, and many people died. We ordinary people couldn't stay there any longer, so we ran away in groups to find a way out. Along the way, we encountered some people who had fled from other places, and later we came across a gang of thugs who wanted to capture people. To avoid them, we ran into the mountains where they were hard to catch.
As the weather got hotter, we encountered no more people. However, many of our people died along the way. Our group of over two thousand people traveled on and off for more than two months, and now only the current group remains.
A week ago, we saw the national flag flying here from the mountain. We were almost out of food, so we thought we'd run here to see if we could survive. Just as we were getting close, a sandstorm hit. We braved the sand and dust, and finally made it to this high wall, where we hid for two days.
Li Ke: "How much do you know about the people who are still alive? Are they all ordinary people who suffered from the disaster?"
Cheng Chenwei hesitated for a moment before saying, "I don't know much about them. We all gathered together on the road. Fortunately, we supported each other along the way and didn't find any unruly people. But we're not very familiar with each other. I was just someone they nominated at the last minute."
Li Ke remembered the brothers and asked about their situation again. Cheng Chenwei had some impression of them: "They joined us about half a month ago. There were more than forty people in the group, and the brother and sister were among them. They couldn't stay in their own place anymore, so they came out to find a way to survive. They got lost in the mountains and then met us, so they left together."
"If we hadn't seen the national flag here, we don't know how much longer we would have wandered in the mountains. Comrade, is this an army base? Are we allowed to stay here?"
Li Ke tried to fool them by saying, "You don't need to know the situation here. There are places to live down the mountain. As long as you are law-abiding citizens, they will make arrangements for you after an investigation."
Meanwhile, in the town at the foot of the mountain, Niu Dazhuang handed the men he had brought back over to his other brothers, instructing them to find a place to isolate them separately. He then went to find Qiu Feng to discuss how to deal with that bastard boss.
A week ago, they found out one of the man's hideouts, ran over but couldn't find the entrance or exit, so they fired two small cannons. Sure enough, several basements were blasted out below, but there was nothing inside except some patients and dead people. That bastard ran away pretty fast.
"Judging from the layout inside, there must have been a lot of stuff stored there before. These guys couldn't have gone far during the emergency evacuation. Tomorrow, let's go to the city shelter and fire a few more shots to force out the real boss there for a chat!" Qiu Feng said coldly.
In a makeshift underground dormitory in the town, a brother and sister lay on the far side. The sister gestured with her hand in her brother's palm. After a while, the brother shook his head. The sister, somewhat angry, lay flat and closed her eyes, ignoring him.
The people around them were used to the brother and sister sleeping together. When they saw the two of them making noise, they just turned over and closed their eyes to rest. After so many days, they could finally lie in bed and get a good night's sleep. The key was that they had drunk a bowl of thin soup beforehand. Although they weren't very full, at least they had something in their stomachs.
On the mountain, Li Ke gave Song Xian two national flags that were even larger than the ones hanging on her wall: "Raise one here, and give the other to Qiu Feng so he can raise it there. Remember to raise them both high. If anyone asks you, just say you raised them yourself, and don't say we gave them to you."
In the middle of the night, Li Ke suddenly woke up from a nightmare. She sat on the bed for a long time, unable to calm down. After a while, Li Ke, who was no longer sleepy, immediately got dressed. She had to go down the mountain right away.
