Chapter 42: Don’t Want to Stay with Me Any Longer

When the sunlight stung Li Wenjing's eyelids, her eyes turned red. She didn't know when she fell asleep yesterday. It was already dawn. Li Wenjing jumped up and accidentally pressed her elbow on Gu Weiyi's face. He woke up and was lying on the bed reading a book. She hit him in the face with the book.

Before Li Wenjing could speak, his voice came from under the pages, "It's only eight o'clock, there's still time."

"It's too late. The bus is not allowed here."

"I'll drive you, get some more sleep."

"I told you to stop sending it. If the people at my workplace see it, they'll always gossip about it and keep urging you to get married and have kids. It's so annoying."

Gu Weiyi's voice was still lingering beside the bed when she rushed into the bathroom, hurriedly washed her face and brushed her teeth. She opened the bathroom door and saw him standing outside, holding her coat, helping her change. He said he was changing clothes, but his hands were still wrapped around her waist. He said he was going out for a kiss, delaying her for another five minutes. Li Wenjing bumped her forehead against his lips.

"I really have to go to work."

"You're bad." His hand was still on her back, and he said with a smile, "You don't even want to stay with me any longer. Is work so important?"

"Don't you have to go to work too? Well, I'm leaving now."

He seemed to be trying to tease her, "I'll hold you and see how you walk."

Li Wenjing bent down and slipped out from under his shoulder. He opened his lips slightly in surprise, and Li Wenjing winked at him with a look of triumph. He rushed out of the house, but before he could even catch the bus, Gu Weiyi followed him, carrying coffee and bread.

"I told you not to send me off."

"I have to go to work too, so I'm on my way." He stroked the messy hair on her forehead, "You left without having breakfast, so I'll still see you off."

"Your breakfast..." Li Wenjing shook her head.

"What's wrong?"

"I don't like bread. It's dry and tastes bad. Forget it. Let's go to the cafeteria and get some buns."

"You're not going to hide and not eat my breakfast so that I won't be able to accompany you."

"you guess."

Li Wenjing smiled at him and got on the bus. They sat together and he took out a book to read. Li Wenjing couldn't help herself and asked her what she was laughing at.

"Nothing, I just feel like reading in a car is a bit pretentious. Look at how the car is shaking, and the sun is so bright, it'll damage my eyes. You're a doctor..."

Before she could finish, he pinched her cheek, and Li Wenjing had no choice but to say, "Ah, not including you."

"I know it doesn't include me." He released her hand. "I don't have time at work, but I have time to look at it in the car."

"Dream of the Red Chamber again, where have you been?"

He was holding a simplified version of "Dream of the Red Chamber" for teenagers. Li Wenjing couldn't help laughing every time she saw him reading so seriously.

"Jinchuan committed suicide by jumping into a well, and Jia Baoyu was beaten by his father."

"It's not Jinchuan, it's Jinchuan, four tones, look at the pinyin."

Li Wenjing pointed it out to him. He said "Oh", squinted his eyes, took out a pen and circled it, "So this is how you read this word."

"Are you going back to China? You're studying so hard."

"What if? There's no need to forget the language."

"Have you studied in China?"

"I went back with my mom and studied at an international primary school for a year. My mom and grandma always quarreled at home, so she took me out again."

"What are they arguing about?"

"A lot, my dad, me, and my uncle, um - probably at my mom's place. Divorce and going back is not a good thing. I almost forgot about it."

"Have you seen grandma yet?"

He shook his head. "I haven't seen her since. I don't know if she's still alive. I should go back and see her. If she still doesn't know my mom's gone, I don't know if Gustav has told her..."

He closed the book, frowned, and thought about this question seriously. He got out of the car, took two steps, and asked, "Do you think Gustav said it?"

"If their relationship was really that bad, he wouldn't have said anything. This kind of thing is hard to talk about. Divorce isn't a good thing, let alone—" Li Wenjing lowered her voice and observed Gu Weiyi's expression. "Instead of guessing, why not just ask him directly?"

When talking about Gustav, he was not angry and showed no emotion. He just promised to call him.

A car passed by and stopped. The dean rolled down the window, greeted them, and asked Li Wenjing to get in and give her a ride.

"No need, it's just ahead."

"You young people are in love, so you should spend more time with Dr. Gu," he said. "Dr. Gu, you should go back to China. It would be great to have a mixed-race child. They'll all be good-looking."

This remark embarrassed both Gu Weiyi and Li Wenjing, and Li Wenjing could only say, "I'm going to work first."

Gu Weiyi helped her open the car door and said goodbye. Looking at the person in the rearview mirror, the dean said, "I know you young people don't like to get married nowadays and just date for fun, but you have to give his father face. We are a big owner and we can't afford to offend him."

"I've always respected him, and I don't want to offend him, but safety comes first."

"It's all thanks to you that this incident was resolved. Don't worry, the hospital and I will remember this. Wenjing, you're so seriously injured. It breaks my heart to see you. Go back and rest for a while. Your salary and bonus will still be paid."

"Director, you don't want me to write the report, right? Give Gustav some face," Li Wenjing said. "I'll write it regardless of whether I take a break or not. They're responsible for this accident. No matter how many times I've told them, they won't change. They're still trying to rush the oil production schedule. We're lucky no one died this time."

"You! If I hadn't said you were straight, no one would have told me that. I'd have to tell you!"

He shook his head and drove the car to the basement. He went out first and then opened the door for Wen Jing.

"I know all your opinions. I called the higher-ups yesterday. They're not sure either. We need to wait for further news. The French issue is no small matter. We shouldn't create diplomatic issues with a project. Will we even be able to survive in Africa? Besides, there are so many people in the company, and we need to pay salaries. If we really piss off the parent company and the owner, what good will it be? Will we even be able to eat?"

The dean's words were very serious. Li Wenjing muttered "I know" and returned to the office. Zhang Zhaochuan took the initiative to greet her and asked about her health and Yu Di. Li Wenjing was a little surprised. She thought that after what happened yesterday, the two would no longer talk to each other, but now it was as if nothing had happened. Then she thought, how much friendship can colleagues in the same office have? Even if they had a fight, they would still maintain a superficial friendship. After all, they were all here to work and make money, so there was no hatred or resentment. After thinking it through, Li Wenjing only responded vaguely. Zhang Zhaochuan said that they would soon recruit someone to replace Zhao Haoran in the spring recruitment, and asked her to go back and rest for two months, and come back to work after her hand healed. He even invited Li Wenjing to lunch, and she couldn't help crying again. She hoped that Li Wenjing could say a few good words for Xiao Qiao when she came.

Li Wenjing picked at the peppers in the dish and smiled wryly. Working, taking a break, and getting paid while lying down had always been her dream. Now that this dream had finally come true, she felt no joy at all. They wouldn't let her do anything, wouldn't let her write reports, fearing she'd cause trouble. It was just a report; Li Wenjing didn't know the truth behind it, and she didn't want to know. She simply insisted on fulfilling her duty.

After get off work, Li Wenjing received a call from Gustav, who asked his driver to pick her up and invite her to have dinner with Gu Weiyi.

"Does he know?"

"He was the one who came to me on his own initiative. Did you persuade him?"

"No, he wants to ask you something." Li Wenjing said, "It just so happens that I have something to ask you too. It's been a long time since we had dinner together."
