"I'm sorry, Rong Mo."
As Chu Xia passed by him, she spoke in a very low voice, almost inaudibly. She didn't even dare to look at him, and could only lower her head and quickly walk past him.
Rong Mo didn't speak. He simply watched her walk out of the office until her figure disappeared from sight before closing the door. His eyes were filled with restraint and helplessness, but he knew that this time, they were truly saying goodbye.
The moment the door closed, Rong Mo seemed to deflate like a balloon, leaning against it dejectedly, his face ashen.
He felt his heart bleeding; he couldn't understand why things had come to this. They had shared so many wonderful times together, and he had always thought that as long as she came back, they would be together forever.
Unfortunately, it was just wishful thinking on his part. Now that he's woken up from his dream, it's all over.
After a few minutes, Rong Mo walked back to his desk, opened the drawer under the desk, and took out a delicate little wooden box.
The small wooden box did look quite old; the four corners of the box were worn rounded, the paint had almost completely peeled off, revealing the natural color of the wood underneath, and there were even some fine cracks in some places.
Rong Mo gently picked up the small wooden box, a faint sadness welling up in his heart. This box was left to him by Chu Xia on the eve of her departure abroad. Rong Mo had always treasured this small wooden box, and whenever he missed Chu Xia, he would take it out to look at it, but he would not open the box, for fear that the memories would be too painful.
Now, this small wooden box has become the last connection between Rong Mo and Chu Xia. He gently strokes every line on the box, as if he can touch the warmth and memories Chu Xia left behind.
Rong Mo took a deep breath, mustered his courage, and opened the box. Time seemed to stand still there.
Inside were a bunch of little stars that are outdated for people nowadays. Rong Mo sighed and opened one. It read: "I hope Rong Mo and I will have a good exam." It was signed: "Early summer, autumn of 2XXX, in the capital."
Rong Mo's hand trembled slightly as he opened another one: "I'm so annoyed. I won't be able to see Rong Mo for five months. I'm not happy."
A flicker of pain crossed Rong Mo's eyes; it was the deepest emotion in his heart, an unspeakable sadness and helplessness.
After a while, he continued taking it apart:
"Rong Mo, Rong Mo, Rong Mo..."
"Rong Mo, I like you so much."
"Rong Mo, with such a long distance between us, have you forgotten me?"
"Rong Mo, what should we do? I feel like I can't wait any longer."
...
"Rong Mo, goodbye. I'm going to try to give you up."
Rong Mo's fingers trembled as he crushed all the disassembled stars into pieces with his bare hands.
Looking at the table full of origami stars, Rong Mo sat there blankly, feeling as if he were hearing ringing in his ears. He angrily swept all the origami off the table.
It's all meaningless now; their relationship is over.
These origami pieces were like a sharp knife, deeply piercing the softest corner of Rong Mo's heart.
All those years of waiting and anticipation have become the past; reality has been so cruel that it has torn all love to shreds.
Rong Mo looked at the snow falling outside the window with a sense of desolation, his heart sinking completely.
Suddenly, Rong Mo's phone screen lit up.
He picked up his phone and opened WeChat. Inside was a video sent to him by Aunt Zhao, showing Zhao Zhao and Niannian waving their chubby little hands while drinking milk.
Two little babies lay in their soft cribs, their eyes wide open like two bright gems, filled with curiosity and longing for the world. Their little mouths were slightly open, greedily sucking on their pacifiers, making satisfied "smacking" sounds, while their little feet kicked incessantly, as if dancing joyfully.
The sadness in Rong Mo's eyes gradually faded, and a smile began to appear on his face as he watched the video.
Yes, the children are still waiting for their uncle to come home; he can't keep going on like this.
Besides, torturing yourself over a past you can never go back to is the most foolish thing you can do.
"I'll go back to see the children as soon as I'm done with my work," Rong Mo replied.
Looking at the mess on the ground, Rong Mo got up and squatted down to clean up. After putting the origami back into the small wooden box, Rong Mo pursed his lips, looked at the trash can on the ground, took a deep breath, and solemnly placed the wooden box inside, as if saying goodbye to his past.
The ringing of the phone pulled Rong Mo back to reality. He stood up and grabbed the phone from the table.
"Hello, who is this?" Rong Mo's voice was somewhat muffled.
"Mr. Rong, hello, this is Lu Wei." Lu Wei's gentle voice came from the other end of the line.
"Lu Wei?" Rong Mo was taken aback for a moment, then asked, "What's wrong?"
Lu smiled and said, "I bought some tonics for Zhi Qiu and was thinking of sending them to her, but I just contacted Lu Jia and learned that they had to go back to Rongcheng for some business. So I was thinking that I should send them to Zhi Qiu's home first, so she can eat them when she comes back, since I will be leaving the capital soon."
"Thank you for your trouble," Rong Mo paused, thinking that he shouldn't trouble Lu Wei too much, so he said, "Where are you? Or I can come find you after I get off work later."
But as soon as he said it, Rong Mo realized where Lu Wei was.
Lu Wei immediately understood. She smiled and said, "How about this, I'll come find you. I'm going to the mall in the city center to buy some things later, so you don't need to come pick me up."
“Okay, then I’ll pick you up at the mall.” Rong Mo nodded.
"Okay, then thank you for your help, Mr. Rong." Lu smiled and hung up the phone.
After get off work.
Rong Mo was just about to leave the office when he received a call from Lu Wei.
"Hello?" Rong Mo put on his coat, ready to leave. "I'll come find you right away."
"No need, I bought the things in advance and they're already downstairs at your company. Just come down."
"Huh?" Rong Mo was taken aback, somewhat surprised.
"You'll know once you take the elevator to the first floor." With that, Lu smiled and hung up the phone.
Rong Mo strode out of the elevator and saw Lu Wei standing in the lobby, smiling and waiting.
"Why are you here?" Rong Mo glanced at the gift bags piled up on the sofa not far away and said somewhat embarrassedly, "Why didn't you wait for me to pick you up? It must have been tiring to bring so many things over."
"It's alright, here, I brought you some hot tea." With that, Lu Wei took a cup of hot tea out of the paper bag in her hand and handed it to Rong Mo.
"Thank you." Rong Mo subconsciously took it, his fingers touching Lu Wei's cold hand, feeling somewhat apologetic.
"If you're too shy, you can treat me to a meal," Lu said with a smile.
