Chapter 5 Marriage Agreement
The elevator door slid open silently on the top floor, and the cold air rushed towards me with an even stronger sense of oppression.
Lu Yu's playful invitation was still ringing in his ears. Without any hesitation, Lin Che turned left with slightly hurried steps and headed towards the meeting room.
He needed to get rid of that agreement as soon as possible and end this ridiculous meeting.
"This way." Lu Yu's low voice came from behind him, with an unquestionable guidance.
Lin Che paused and realized that Lu Yu did not walk towards the meeting room, but stopped in front of a heavy ebony door inlaid with dark metal lines.
That's the door to the president's office.
"The agreement and information are in my office." Lu Yu seemed to see through his thoughts. He pressed the access control lightly with his fingertips. The door lock made a slight "click" sound and opened inward.
Lin Che had no choice but to follow in.
Lu Yu's office was surprisingly large, occupying almost half of the top floor.
The huge floor-to-ceiling glass curtain wall allows you to take in almost the entire city, as if you are standing on the clouds and overlooking all living things.
The interior color scheme is extremely cold - dark gray, inky black, and cold silver. The floor is made of shiny black marble, reflecting the linear lights embedded in the ceiling.
An astonishingly large ebony desk occupies the center, with cold and simple lines. Apart from an ultra-thin computer monitor, a metal pen holder and a few documents, there is nothing else on it. It is so neat that it is almost rigid.
Against the wall is a floor-to-ceiling bookcase, neatly arranged with heavy hardcover books and file boxes. In the corner is a group of dark gray leather sofas with equally cold and hard lines, surrounding a low black metal coffee table.
The entire space is empty, cold and orderly. Every detail demonstrates the owner's absolute control and inviolable sense of distance. There are no unnecessary decorations with personal warmth.
The air was filled with a very light cold scent mixed with cedar and leather, exactly the same as the scent on Lu Yu.
"Sit down." Lu Yu took off his coat and casually put it on the armrest of the sofa, then walked to the back of the desk.
Lin Che didn't sit on the sofa. He walked to the desk, glanced across the table, and prepared to get straight to the point.
"I want to review the marriage agreement with you again." Lin Che's voice was as calm as ever, as if it had nothing to do with him.
Lu Yu's eyes swept across Lin Che's calm face, raised his eyebrows, took the agreement out from under the desk, placed it on the table, pushed it in front of Lin Che, and raised his chin to signal him to open it.
Lin Che's gaze lingered for a moment on the two lines of text: "Lin Che voluntarily waives any inheritance rights, division rights, and any form of property claims against Lu Yu's pre-marital and marital property" and the bolded "Agreement validity period: three years. Upon expiration, this agreement will be automatically terminated and the marriage relationship will automatically terminate."
Seeing that the place in the lower right corner where Lu Yu's signature should have been was blank, Lin Che looked up at Lu Yu in surprise, but the other party was looking at Lin Che quietly. His eyes were full of scrutiny, and there was also a hint of complexity that Lin Che could not understand.
"Why didn't you sign?"
"Are you sure this is fair to you?"
Lu Yu leaned back in the large leather chair, his eyes sweeping over Lin Che's elegant yet resolute signature, and asked back.
Lin Che opened her mouth, not knowing how to respond.
Every detail of the marriage agreement revealed Lin Che's "cheapness" and transactional nature. But what Lu Yu didn't know was that Lin Che actually felt that he had benefited from this marriage that was in name only.
Whether it's the high medical expenses for his mother, or... the opportunity to get close to Lu Yu.
Lin Che looked at the black and white paper and just thought that people should be content.
He chose to speak at the right time to continue the discussion of the agreement. "Mr. Lu, I have signed the agreement. Regarding the property, I reiterate that after the three-year period, I will not take away anything that belongs to you. I don't need the 'living allowance' either. I have the ability to support myself." His tone was flat but firm, and his attitude of drawing a clear line was extremely clear.
He paused, then looked up at Lu Yu. His dark eyes were clear and frank, as if stating a simple fact: "In the next three years, I will abide by the agreement, play my role well, treat you with respect, and not disturb each other. If..."
His voice dropped slightly for a moment, carrying a subtle, almost cruel clarity. "If, during this time, Mr. Lu meets someone he truly wants to spend his life with, or feels that this deal no longer needs to continue, please let me know. I will leave immediately and will not pester you. If necessary, I will explain to the other party that our relationship is merely contractual and will not cause you any trouble."
He positioned himself with incredible clarity—a prop that could be replaced or retired at any moment. His demeanor was humble, yet he possessed a coldness that could not be violated.
The office was silent, with only the low hum of the central air conditioner.
Outside the floor-to-ceiling windows, the hustle and bustle of the city is isolated a hundred meters above the sky.
Lu Yu's deep gaze was fixed on Lin Che's face, taking in every subtle expression and every clear word that drew a line between the two.
That gaze was terrifyingly calm, like the unfathomable sea before a storm.
"As long as you are sure, I will sign it." Lu Yu gave Lin Che another chance to stand with him on an equal footing. As long as he changed his mind, this agreement would be thrown into the shredder and rewritten.
When Lin Che heard Lu Yu's question, her fingers curled up unconsciously.
He turned his head slightly to avoid Lu Yu's sight, but the glass of the floor-to-ceiling window clearly reflected his appearance - his eyelashes drooped, casting a small shadow under his eyes, and the corners of his eyes were faintly red, as if they were burned by something.
"No... no objection."
Lu Yu's gaze fell on the red corners of his eyes, and his eyes darkened a little. His slender fingers took the agreement from Lin Che, picked up the pen on the table, and signed the two words "Lu Yu" in a powerful and vigorous manner in the lower right corner of the agreement.
The movements are smooth, without any drag.
The agreement officially came into effect.
Lu Yu closed the folder and casually placed it on the corner of the table.
Lu Yu suddenly spoke, his voice low and gentle, like a stone thrown into a calm lake:
"Lin Che."
Lin Che looked up at him, waiting for what to say next.
Lu Yu leaned forward slightly, folded his hands on the table, and locked his gaze with Lin Che's sharply. He asked a question that was completely unexpected to Lin Che and seemed to have nothing to do with this cold deal:
"And you?"
He paused and uttered the second half of the sentence clearly.
"Before you sign this agreement... do you have someone you like?"
