Chapter 8 My Fierce Wife
Ji Huaizhi thus settled down at the Wang family's residence.
The Wang family is honest and kind, and they all work together as a team, managing to live a pretty good life.
No one gave Ji Huaizhi and Ji Gou'er a hard time, and the father and daughter quickly integrated into each other's lives.
Ji Huaizhi can't just lie down all the time; he needs to get up and walk around as much as possible, otherwise his muscles will atrophy.
Wang Dashan carved a pair of crutches for him so that he could walk around in the yard.
After he was able to get out of bed, Ji Huaizhi began to do household chores as much as he could.
As they spent more time together, his aunt became increasingly satisfied with him. She thought he was a good boy, just too honest and straightforward.
That day, Feng's mother steamed a pot of rice cakes and saw her daughter pick out half a basketful when she came home from get off work.
"Qiaoxiang!"
"What are you doing, Mom?" Feng Qiaoxiang lifted the plastic sheet curtain and came in, grabbing a rice cake to eat. "You want me to run errands for you?"
"One cent for the errand."
Upon hearing this, Feng's mother grabbed her chopsticks and smacked her hand: "Do I look like a penny?"
"Send this to the Wang family."
Feng Qiaoxiang pouted, "It hurts."
"I hope it hurts you to death!" Mother Feng started to shoo people away: "Send it over and come back, don't stay and talk. Sister Wang will definitely want to get something for you too."
"Okay." Feng Qiaoxiang took the winnowing basket while still chewing on her rice cake.
As she walked along, someone asked Feng Qiaoxiang, "Where are you going, Qiaoxiang? What's this?"
Someone came forward, saw it was rice cake, and, holding a bowl and chopsticks, tried to pick it up directly: "Did your mom steam rice cakes? Give me one, my grandson loves to eat them."
Feng Qiaoxiang smiled and dodged away with the winnowing basket: "I'm helping my mom deliver something. It's not busy in the fields lately, so you can steam some too, Auntie."
Seeing that she simply picked it up and left, the man spat out a curse where she couldn't see it.
"What a piece of trash! Not even a single piece of poop! No wonder you can't get married!"
After walking past, Feng Qiaoxiang rolled her eyes to the heavens: "Lao Busi, he talks bad about me every day and still wants to take something from me. Does he want to eat dog shit?"
"Cauliflower, what did you say?"
The man wiped his nose, cleaned his shoes, and then picked up his chopsticks to eat: "I saw Feng Qiaoxiang walking towards Old Wang's house, carrying rice cakes in her hand."
"I wouldn't give her one even if you asked her to, just like her mother."
The man smiled and said, "How dare you ask people for food? With so much grain, who would be willing to part with it?"
"Do you think the Feng family might have their eye on that nephew from the Wang family?" Aunt Caihua said, watching Feng Qiaoxiang's retreating figure.
"You might not know since you married into the family, but Sister Feng and Wang Dashan's younger sister were very close when they were young, like sisters. When Dami passed away, Sister Feng even gave birth prematurely. I guess she heard that Dami's son was having a hard time and sent him some food."
Everyone in the village knew that Wang Dashan had brought his nephew to recuperate from his injuries, and they all said he was a kind and righteous man.
Although people aren't tightening their belts to make ends meet these days, they're still reluctant to feed two more mouths to feed.
Caihua, holding her bowl, raised her chin and said, "If there's that connection, then it's even more likely."
"Didn't they say that Wang Dashan's nephew's wife ran away and they have a daughter? I guess that's why his daughter can't get married."
Seeing that she was talking more and more outrageous, the man, knowing the nature of the Feng family, said he didn't know and turned back into the house.
To avoid getting burned.
Feng Qiaoxiang saw several children at the door: "Are there any adults in your family?"
"Yes!" the Wang family children exclaimed in unison.
When Feng Qiaoxiang saw Ji Gou'er, she raised an eyebrow: "Whose kid are you? I've never seen you before."
"I am Ji Huaizhi's child." Ji Gou'er's speech was a little unclear, but she looked very cute among the group of children now that she was clean and tidy.
"What a good little girl."
"Qiaoxiang?" Wang Xiaoer's wife came out when she heard the voice, and looked at the winnowing basket in her hand with embarrassment: "What are you doing?"
"Is your sister-in-law cooking?" Wang Qiaoxiang asked her to get something to hold it: "My mom asked me to bring it over."
As Qiaoxiang was pouring the contents into the other person's basin, one of the bowls fell out: "Oh dear, what a pity. A little dirt won't hurt you."
Just as he was about to pick it up, Ji Huaizhi, who was leaning on his cane, picked it up first.
Feng Qiaoxiang stared blankly at the man opposite her.
Ji Huaizhi handed her the things in his hand without saying a word. The second wife looked at this one and then at that one. These two seemed quite well-matched.
"No need to give it to me, you can eat it yourself. I'll head back now." Feng Qiaoxiang gestured with her chin towards the second daughter-in-law.
"Qiaoxiang, sit down for a while." She quickly followed.
"I'm not sitting here anymore, I'm going home for dinner." Feng Qiaoxiang glanced back again, then looked down at her second daughter-in-law and said, "You've raised a good-looking guy, he looks quite handsome. He looked rather silly before."
"Hahaha, she's quite pretty." Hearing her words, the second wife couldn't help but pat her shoulder: "Thank you, Dad. We sprouted some bean sprouts a couple of days ago. They're ready to eat, so I'll grab a handful for you to add to your dishes."
"Thanks in advance. You can sprout beans?"
"The one Huai Zhi taught, the one you just mentioned who's quite handsome."
Ji Huaizhi patted the rice cake and put it directly into his mouth.
Zhang Xiuhua was surprised to see the half-eaten basin of rice cakes: "Who took this?"
"Qiaoxiang brought it over, saying Aunt Feng asked her to send it." The second son's wife replied, "That's so generous. Didn't we sprout some bean sprouts? Let's send some over when they're ready to eat."
Zhang Xiuhua instantly understood why Feng's mother had brought them: "Grab more, didn't Douzi and the others pick up a lot of chestnuts? Pack some up too."
"Okay!" The second son's wife smiled and said, "Mom, do you know what Qiaoxiang said to my cousin today?"
Zhang Xiuhua kept her hands busy: "What did you say?"
"You say we're raising a lot of people? We've made my cousin so handsome." The second son's wife couldn't help but laugh again.
"This girl." Zhang Xiuhua also found it amusing. As she laughed, her movements slowed down, and she looked thoughtful.
The second son's wife immediately understood what her mother meant.
“I think they are a good match. My cousin is quiet and honest, but he needs a strong wife so he won’t suffer.”
Zhang Xiuhua glanced at her and said, "You can read my mind!"
