Chapter 45: Educated Youth Sent Down to the Countryside (44)

"That Su Yao is a vixen, seducing men everywhere."

"That's right, look at her fickle and promiscuous appearance."

"Now look what's happened, she's been saved by two men, let's see how she gets out of this mess."

"Hmph, does she think she can do whatever she wants just because she's pretty? She should take a good look at herself." A woman said contemptuously, her eyes full of disdain.

Some of the male villagers glared at Su Yao with malicious eyes, as if they wanted to devour her alive.

“Su Yao’s figure is quite alluring. If only I could…” A male villager grinned lewdly, but he only got halfway through his sentence before the others understood what he meant.

Some of the male villagers would occasionally whistle frivolously at Su Yao.

Although Su Yao was unconscious and unaware of these words, her brows furrowed involuntarily, as if she were feeling the malice even in her dream.

After performing first aid on Su Yao, Zhao Yu was panting heavily. He had just straightened up when he heard the villagers' offensive conversation, reigniting his anger. He glared at them angrily and shouted, "Can't you all shut up?!"

Just then, Su Yao suddenly spat out a mouthful of water and slowly opened her eyes. Zhao Yu breathed a slight sigh of relief upon seeing this. He quickly took a coat from Liu Cui and gently draped it over Su Yao's shoulders.

As Su Yao regained consciousness, her head felt dizzy, and the villagers' malicious words echoed in her ears. Those words were like sharp thorns, piercing her heart. Her face instantly turned ashen, devoid of any color, and the last glimmer of light in her eyes was extinguished, replaced by endless despair and pain. Her body trembled uncontrollably, as if she were in a frozen wasteland.

"I'm not... I'm not like what you're saying..." Su Yao tried to defend herself, but her voice was so weak it was almost inaudible. She couldn't accept such insults; she felt as if her whole world was collapsing. Suddenly, everything went black, and she lost consciousness again, collapsing limply into Zhao Yu's arms.

Zhao Yu panicked, his heart feeling as if it were being gripped tightly by an invisible hand. He held Su Yao tightly, as if she were the most precious treasure in the world, afraid that she would disappear if he let go. "Su Yao! Su Yao! Wake up!" Zhao Yu's voice trembled with fear, his eyes filled with worry and anxiety.

Just then, the village chief and the brigade leader arrived. The village chief's face was so dark it seemed like it could drip water. He glared angrily at the villagers who were still gossiping and shouted, "Shut up! You're all so unruly, talking nonsense here!" His voice, like a booming bell, echoed in the air, silencing the villagers.

The brigade leader also said sternly, "Everyone, disperse. Don't cause any more trouble here!" Only then did the villagers realize that their behavior had gone too far. They lowered their heads, not daring to meet the eyes of the village chief and the brigade leader, and shut their mouths, slowly dispersing.

Zhao Yu carried Su Yao and ran towards the educated youth settlement as fast as he could. His forehead was covered in sweat, and his breathing became rapid, but his steps did not falter in the slightest.

Upon arriving at the educated youth settlement, Zhao Yu quickly summoned the village doctor. The doctor carefully examined Su Yao and said, "There's nothing seriously wrong. She's just been frightened. She'll be fine after some rest." Hearing this, a huge weight was lifted from Zhao Yu's heart.

While Su Yao was unconscious, Zhao Yu asked Liu Cui to help Su Yao wash her body and change her clothes. Although Liu Cui was somewhat reluctant, she still agreed.

At this moment, Su Yao slowly woke up. Her eyes were confused and panicked as she looked around, seemingly searching for something. When she saw Zhao Yu, her heart was filled with complex emotions. She was grateful for everything Zhao Yu had done for her, but at the same time, she was afraid of what might happen next.

Her hands gripped the hem of her clothes tightly, twisting them incessantly, as if to gain some sense of security. Her body continued to tremble; she knew this matter had escalated far beyond what she was currently facing, and she might face unprecedented trouble. Her heart was filled with fear and anxiety; she didn't know what to do.
