"Su, why do you carry a knife with you? And you mentioned that the suspect said you've offended someone. Do you have anyone in mind to recommend?"
Su Xingran and Xiao Xue couldn't figure out who they might have offended, especially Xiao Xue, who had never had any conflicts or grudges with anyone in Beijing. The two looked at each other, feeling utterly bewildered.
"The knife was in my bag for self-defense," Su Xingran said, taking a certificate out of her bag and handing it to the police officer.
The police officers took the certificate and discovered it was an honorary certificate. Upon opening it, they were all shocked; it was a certificate issued by their own unit.
That year, Su Xingran discovered enemy agents and a laboratory, and later assisted the military and police in capturing them, saving the country and its people from harm. Huang Zhenhua, Gu Moting, and others applied to the military for an honorary certificate for Su Xingran.
The two policemen closed the certificate, stood up, and handed it back to Su Xingran with both hands, even standing at attention and saluting. This was a comrade who had performed great service, worthy of their respect, and they now understood why he carried a knife for self-defense.
Looking at the expressions of the two police officers, Su Xingran had no idea what they were thinking. Su Xingran's knife wasn't actually in her backpack; she had taken it out of her spatial storage by concealing it within the backpack.
“Officer, we’re sure we haven’t offended anyone. I’m a student who came here to study after being admitted to university. My sister-in-law also came here to study, but she got married to my older brother a few days before the start of the semester. My older brother is a soldier, and my sister-in-law is a military wife.”
Su Xingran glanced at her watch; it was almost seven o'clock. Oh no, it was so late, and she and her sister-in-law still weren't home. Her master must be worried.
"Officer, could I borrow your phone to call my family? We agreed to come home for dinner after school, and it's almost 7 p.m. now. My family must be worried."
The two police officers nodded. "Okay, I'll take you to the phone to make the call."
Following the police officer to the telephone, Su Xingran remembered the Huang family's phone number and picked up the receiver to dial it.
Huang Taihe drove to the school to look for her, while Huang Zhenhua and Huang's mother, who came over to cook dinner that evening, waited at home. They were all extremely worried; Su Xingran had finished her classes around four o'clock, and it was almost seven o'clock now, and she still hadn't returned.
Just as Huang Zhenhua was feeling restless, the telephone rang. He went to the telephone, picked up the receiver, and answered the call.
"Hello," Huang Zhenhua heard Su Xingran's voice and quickly asked, "Xingran, where did you and Xiaoxue go? Why aren't you back yet, it's so late?"
"Master, my sister-in-law Xiaoxue and I ran into some trouble on the way. We're at the police station now. Don't worry about us, we're fine. We're giving our statements now, and that should be enough."
Upon hearing that the two were at the police station, Huang Zhenhua's heart leaped into his throat. "You and Xiaoxue stay at the police station for now. I'll come with your brother Taihe to pick you up in a bit."
Huang Zhenhua had just hung up the phone when Huang Taihe returned. "Dad, we couldn't find him. All the students who are going home at this time have left, except for those who live on campus long-term."
"Xingran just called home. She and Xiaoxue are at the police station. I'll go with you to pick them up and see what happened, how they ended up at the police station."
Back at the Zhou family home, Zhou Yun kept wondering if those four people had succeeded. She was really looking forward to seeing those two country bumpkins ruined! But she miscalculated; her troubles would soon be coming her way.
