Faced with her mother's words, Wang Rui simply smiled, indicating that she didn't care. Wang Guo, standing beside her, gently tugged at Wang Rui's sleeve, his face beaming with a bright smile, and said softly, "Second sister, I have something on my mind that I want to tell you." Then, he turned to Wang's mother, his tone no longer as warm as with Wang Rui, and said, "Mom, you go ahead and do your cooking. Let my second sister and I have a good talk."
Wang's mother was clearly unwilling to agree to her son's request. She frowned and retorted, "What could you two little devils possibly have to talk about? Besides, your second sister has finally come home, so she should help me cook."
Upon hearing this, Wang Guo was indignant. He took a small step forward and argued, "Mom, when my eldest sister is home, I've never seen her come over to cook with you! Now that my second sister is back, please be kind and let her rest." Before he finished speaking, he grabbed Wang Rui's hand and quickly walked towards his room.
Wang's mother stood there cursing for a while, but neither of the two people inside paid any attention to her. Just as she was about to go to the kitchen, she saw Wang Hua return. Without saying a word, she pulled Wang Hua into the kitchen. Even though Wang Hua was extremely unwilling, he could not refute Wang's mother's iron palm.
When Wang's father returned, Wang's mother had already served the dishes. He leaned over to take a look and saw a plate of stir-fried cabbage and a plate of blanched bok choy. These two bland dishes made Wang's father want to slap his wife. Usually, when she cooked at home, even vegetables had some minced meat in them. But these two dishes on the table not only had no meat, but they also looked so unappetizing. He really had a short mind.
The family of five sat around the dinner table, the atmosphere somewhat awkward. Mr. Wang gazed at his youngest daughter, Wang Rui, with a broad smile, his heart filled with joy, but he opened his mouth several times, unsure where to begin. People often say that fatherly love is like a mountain, and his love for his children was indeed like a silent mountain, always standing there quietly, rarely expressed. Now, when he wanted to express it, he suddenly found himself at a loss for words.
Meanwhile, Wang Hua, standing to the side, had no time to ponder her father's thoughts. She spotted a roast chicken on the table, her eyes lighting up instantly. Without hesitation, she reached for her chopsticks, quickly grabbing a chicken leg and placing it in her bowl. Seeing this, her father's face darkened immediately, clearly displeased with Wang Hua's selfish behavior. However, there was still another chicken leg on the table, and he thought to himself, "Wang Rui will surely take this one herself, won't she?"
Unexpectedly, Wang's mother reacted swiftly. Seeing that Wang Hua had already taken a chicken leg, she deftly turned her chopsticks, which were originally reaching for the cabbage, and accurately picked up the remaining chicken leg, placing it without hesitation into her youngest son Wang Guo's bowl. Wang Guo, who was engrossed in eating cabbage, never expected that a chicken leg would fall from the sky while he was quietly eating vegetables. He was stunned for a moment, then happily began to devour the chicken leg.
However, when Wang Guo looked up and his gaze inadvertently swept over his sisters' bowls, he froze. His eldest sister, Wang Hua, also had a chicken leg in her bowl, while his second sister's bowl contained nothing but white rice. At that moment, he felt so embarrassed he wanted to kick the ground. Even the chicken leg didn't taste so good anymore. He thought for a moment, then stood up, went to the kitchen, grabbed a pair of chopsticks, and placed a chicken wing in Wang Rui's bowl, smiling as he said, "Second sister, have some chicken wings."
Wang's mother spotted the chicken wings in Wang Rui's bowl with sharp eyes. Without saying a word, she quickly reached out with her chopsticks and put them into her own bowl, muttering as she did so, "She works outside all day, eating and drinking well with that big boss. What good food can't she eat? Why would she care about these mere roasted chicken wings? I might as well let her eat them, as a way of showing her filial piety."
Wang Rui watched helplessly as the chicken wings that were once hers vanished before her eyes, as if something inside her had disappeared with them—the maternal love she had always longed for but never received enough of. At that moment, she felt as if her soul had been ripped away, silently burying her head in her bowl of white rice, completely devoid of any interest in the dazzling array of dishes on the table.
Sitting to the side, Mr. Wang was initially secretly pleased with his son's obedience and understanding. But who would have thought that no matter how well-behaved his son was, he couldn't compete with having such an unreasonable mother. He looked around the dining table and saw that, apart from Wang Rui, the bowls of the other four family members were piled high with roast chicken.
Mr. Wang was overcome with anger and glared fiercely at Mrs. Wang. However, Mrs. Wang was enjoying her meal immensely, her mouth covered in grease, completely oblivious to her husband's furious gaze. Mr. Wang sighed helplessly, reached for the chopsticks that Wang Guo had just used, and carefully picked up a piece of roast chicken for Wang Rui, gently placing it in her bowl.
Feeling her father's care, Wang Rui's heart warmed, and her eyes reddened slightly. She quickly whispered, "Thank you, Dad!"
These words brought a pang of sadness to Mr. Wang's heart. His second daughter had always been his pride, because she was beautiful and academically gifted. However, due to their family's financial situation, she was unable to attend university and went to work after graduating from high school. Even though she now has a good and respectable job that pays well, her family has ultimately mistreated her.
When Wang's mother saw Wang Rui's appearance, she couldn't help but frown slightly. With a smirk, she picked up her chopsticks, which she had just used and were still wet with saliva, and put a piece of food into Wang Hua's bowl, saying, "Xiao Hua, eat more. Look how thin you've become lately!"
