Chapter Twelve: The Missing Wife

"Bullshit! If I killed Han Shuang, why would I dare to call the police? If that little beast knew I killed Han Shuang, how could I let her go? Anyway, killing one is the same as killing two." Zheng Wu's mind suddenly became active, and he refuted most of Xu Xiaolin's accusations, and also presented his own factual evidence.

"Let me answer the first question first. Calling the police? That was the best thing you did. In that respect, I have to admire your composure. Although there are many cases in my novels where the person who reports the crime is the murderer, it shouldn't be that common in real life. As the victim, you would naturally be less of a suspect in the eyes of the police. As it turns out, your approach did allow you to get away with it for many years."

"This is all your guess! You police solve cases based on guesswork!" Zheng Wu roared, his hoarse voice trembling violently.

“Next, the second question.” Xu Xiaolin smiled, completely ignoring Zheng Wu’s roar. “If you had known back then that Han Mo had witnessed all your crimes, of course you wouldn’t have let her go. But you didn’t know that Han Mo was standing in the shadows behind you while you were committing the crime. If Han Mo hadn’t told you the truth of what she saw, you probably would never have known that there was another person in the world who knew, right? But by then, Han Mo had already become a famous novelist through enduring humiliation and hardship. You no longer had the ability or the means to take her life.”

"You! You! You..." If you were standing close to Zheng Wu, you could clearly hear the sound of Zheng Wu clenching his lips and grinding his teeth.

"After that, you fell into her clutches. She demanded you repay everything you had done to her. Your later life became a nightmare. You suddenly realized that the hunter and the prey had been reversed. The once heinous criminal you had become a sheep in wolf's clothing, at Han Mo's mercy. I understand how unpleasant it is to have a gun pointed at you, because you never know when a bullet might fly and smash your head to pieces." Xu Xiaolin walked around the table and slowly approached Zheng Wu. A fierce glint appeared in Zheng Wu's eyes, like the desperate look of a wolf in its death throes. Zheng Wu roared and reached for Xu Xiaolin. Xu Xiaolin nimbly dodged behind Zheng Wu, circled him once, and returned to the opposite side of the table.

Xu Xiaolin hadn't noticed that Wang Shen's gaze had been fixed on her the entire time she was making her statement. Xu Xiaolin shifted her gaze from Zheng Wu, exchanged another glance with Wang Shen, and smiled. "I'm so sorry, it's an occupational hazard; I like to follow clues and make extra deductions whenever I encounter a lead."

"I didn't kill anyone." Zheng Wu stared at Xu Xiaolin with red eyes, his teeth still clenched tightly, each word escaping from between his teeth.

"We need to conduct further investigation before we can draw a conclusion," Wang Shen said calmly.

"Officer Wang, do you have a USB port and a media player here?" Xu Xiaolin interrupted Wang Shen.

"What do you need this for?" Wang Shen turned to look at Xu Xiaolin, his eyes filled with great confusion.

“If you want to solve the case as soon as possible, I think I can help you. However, I need a media player that can accept USB flash drives.” Xu Xiaolin brushed the hair that had fallen in front of her eyes back down and smiled at Wang Shen again.

Wang Shen nodded and stood up from his chair. "Come with me." With that, Wang Shen turned and walked towards the door.

"Officer Wang, wait a minute, I have a small request. I don't know if it's in accordance with the rules." Xu Xiaolin stood still, called out to Wang Shen, tilted her head slightly, revealing the shyness unique to young girls.

"Do you have any other requests?" Wang Shen stopped and turned to look at Xu Xiaolin.

Xu Xiaolin smiled, turned to the side and pointed to Zheng Wu sitting behind her. "Let's bring him along too."
