Chapter 104 Testing
Jiang Wan bent down in front of the sink and washed her face with cold water.
Water droplets slid down my cheeks, and the heat subsided a little.
She looked up at herself in the mirror; her face was still slightly flushed, but much better than before.
Jiang Wan dried her face, crumpled the tissue into a ball, threw it into the trash can, and turned to walk out.
As soon as I reached the restroom door, I saw two people standing in front of me, a man and a woman, facing each other in the hallway.
The boy had his back to her, while the girl had most of her profile facing her.
Even just by looking at his back, she could recognize him at a glance; it was Zhou Chong.
The woman standing in front of him, smiling shyly, was Chen Yuewei.
Jiang Wan took two steps forward, and Chen Yuewei's voice reached her ears.
"Zhou Chong, there are some things I've kept in my heart for a long time, and I was afraid I might not have the chance to tell you in the future, so I wanted to tell you today."
Jiang Wan paused, then turned and hid behind a pillar.
Zhou Chong grunted in response, then glanced back towards the restroom, startling Jiang Wan who quickly shrank back and hid behind a pillar.
Chen Yuewei lowered her head and pursed her lips. "Zhou Chong, actually, I've been paying attention to you ever since we were divided into classes in the second year of high school. You're a very good student, very outstanding, and tall and handsome. You stand out among your classmates. I want to say, I... I like you..."
Jiang Wan had just gotten goosebumps from listening to this when Zhou Chong suddenly interrupted Chen Yuewei.
"I'm sorry," he said, "I don't like you."
Chen Yuewei was stunned, staring blankly at Zhou Chong.
After a moment, she blinked, her voice trembling with tears, "It's okay... I know you're so amazing, it's normal that you don't like me... but it's okay, I can wait patiently, until the day you fall in love with me..."
“That day will never come.” Zhou Chong lowered his brows, his voice calm and resolute. “I will never like you, don’t waste your time on me.”
Chen Yuewei pursed her lips tightly; Zhou Chong's rejection felt like icy blades, stabbing into her heart again and again.
After trying to hold back for a while, she finally couldn't help it, and tears streamed down her face.
"...Why?" Chen Yuewei's voice trembled. "Are you so sure that you'll never...never fall in love with me? You haven't even given me a chance, how do you know it's impossible?"
Zhou Chong didn't have the patience to answer her questions one by one, and simply said, "I'm very sure, it's impossible."
Chen Yuewei bit her lip and choked out, "I...I understand."
After saying that, she didn't look at Zhou Chong's reaction anymore, lowered her head, turned around and ran away.
As the figures in his line of sight receded into the distance, Zhou Chong turned around, only to suddenly see Jiang Wan appear in front of him.
With her hands behind her back, head tilted, and a faint smile in her eyes as she looked at him.
He glanced behind her. "Just came out of the restroom?"
Jiang Wan raised an eyebrow. "Not really."
Zhou Chong was about to ask further when he heard Jiang Wan ask in return, "And you, were you waiting for me at the bathroom door on purpose?"
Zhou Chong chuckled and nodded. "Yeah, I noticed your face was a little red earlier, and I was worried you'd had too much to drink, so I came over to check on you."
Jiang Wan smiled, took two steps forward, stopped in front of Zhou Chong, looked up, and said in a tone that was half teasing and half serious, "And you also rejected a girl's confession?"
Zhou Chong was taken aback, then immediately realized, "You saw everything?"
"Hmm." Jiang Wan nodded, looked over Zhou Chong's shoulder and towards the direction of the private room behind him. "I'm not saying this, but your attitude in rejecting people is too cold. Chen Yuewei was so heartbroken when you rejected her that she ran away crying."
Zhou Chong pursed his lips and explained in a deep voice, "I told you before, I don't like her, so I shouldn't leave her any hope. It's not good for anyone."
Jiang Wan withdrew her gaze, raised her eyes, and looked into his eyes. "Yes, you're right. I know you don't like to drag things out, but if..."
Jiang Wan paused for a moment, then stopped talking.
"If what?" Zhou Chong looked at her and continued to press.
"What if..." Jiang Wan pursed her lips, "What if the person confessing their feelings to you was me?"
Zhou Chong was stunned for a moment.
He stared intently at Jiang Wan, his heart pounding, trying to read something from her subtle expressions.
Is it a test, or is it genuine affection?
He didn't know.
Jiang Wan stared straight at him, and after a moment, she suddenly chuckled, "Alright, look how nervous you are. I was just kidding."
Zhou Chong breathed a sigh of relief, but what followed was a sense of loss that almost overwhelmed him.
Perhaps still a bit tipsy, Jiang Wan hadn't thought much about it and blurted it out, which made her feel a little annoyed.
Even after she realized what she had asked, she had a fleeting thought that she might as well use this opportunity to test the waters.
But seeing that Zhou Chong remained silent for a long time, her dizzy mind almost immediately cleared up.
It shouldn't have been tested, or rather, it shouldn't have been tested so early.
"Let's hurry back to the private room." Jiang Wan smiled, "Our classmates are still waiting for us to drink and sing together."
After she finished speaking, she was about to walk past Zhou Chong when he suddenly called out to her.
"etc."
"What's wrong?"
Jiang Wan stopped and blinked in confusion.
Zhou Chong looked down at her, his hands clenched tightly in his pockets. "We agreed before that I would bring you a gift from Europe."
Jiang Wan paused, then her expression changed to one of sudden realization. "You want to give it to me now?"
"Hmm." Zhou Chong pulled his hand out of his pocket, holding a small, flat box in his palm. "I don't know if you'll like it, but I think it will suit you."
As he spoke, he opened the box, revealing a delicate platinum necklace lying on a black velvet base.
The moon-shaped pendant is adorned with a delicate and sparkling diamond at its tip, radiating brilliance.
Jiang Wan stared wide-eyed in surprise, momentarily forgetting to thank him first.
"Do you like it?" Zhou Chong took out the necklace. "Let me put it on you."
Jiang Wan snapped out of her reverie, met Zhou Chong's gaze as he looked down at her, and smiled, "Yes, I like it."
After saying that, she swept her long hair forward, revealing the back of her neck, and said, "Help me put it on."
Zhou Chong chuckled and lowered his head, leaning closer. He held the two ends of the necklace in his hands, carefully wrapping it around her neck, controlling his long, drawn-out breaths, and slowly fastened the clasp.
"Okay," he said softly.
Warm, humid air wafted onto the back of my neck, carrying a faint scent of alcohol.
Jiang Wan was a little confused and shrank back slightly.
Zhou Chong quickly withdrew his hand, stepped back to the previous distance, and looked down at the necklace around her neck. "It's very beautiful, and it really suits you."
Jiang Wan lowered her head and touched the moon pendant on her chest. "Thank you, I like it very much."
