Chapter 45 The Handsome Young Man with Good Grades
Time flew by while I was studying at Zhou Chongjia's house.
Before we knew it, it was already dark outside.
Jiang Wan realized this when she received a call from Shan Tong.
"Hello, Mom."
Jiang Wan had just finished summarizing a type of wrong questions, closed her notebook, looked up at the window, and realized that dusk had soaked the entire sky.
"Wanwan, isn't she back yet?"
"Ah, I'm back." Jiang Wan took the phone away from her ear and glanced at the time. "I'll be back soon."
"It's probably hard to get a taxi around here at this hour, isn't it?" Shan Tong paused. "Should I ask your dad to pick you up from the city library on his way?"
"No need," Jiang Wan quickly refused, glancing briefly at Zhou Chong beside her. "I... I'm already on my way back."
She's not at the city library now, she's at Zhou Chong's house.
If her father goes there and finds nothing, and then asks her where she went, she'll be in a situation where she can't clear her name no matter what.
"Really?" Shan Tong pressed, "How much longer until we get home?"
"About ten minutes..." Jiang Wan forced herself to estimate the time, "I'll be home in about ten minutes, um."
"Oh, okay then. I won't have your dad pick you up. Dinner will be ready soon, including your favorite sweet and sour pork ribs. Come back soon!"
"Okay, Mom, I'll be home soon."
After saying that, Jiang Wan quickly hung up the phone, grabbed Zhou Chong's hand, and said, "Quickly ride your bike and take me home, hurry."
Zhou Chong had overheard her on the phone and roughly knew it was her mother urging her to come home. He didn't ask any further questions, but simply waved his hand and said, "Then hurry up and pack your schoolbag?"
"Oh right." Jiang Wan suddenly realized, let go of Zhou Chong's hand, and quickly put the study materials on the table into her schoolbag.
He zipped up the bag, slung it over his shoulder, and ran out the door.
"Be careful." Zhou Chong followed behind her, supporting her shoulders. "Don't rush, ten minutes is enough."
“Okay.” Jiang Wan slowed down and took the elevator downstairs with Zhou Chong.
Zhou Chong unlocked the car, straddled it, turned around, lifted the hood of Jiang Wan's down jacket, carefully put it on for her, and tightened the elastic buckle on the brim.
"Wrap yourself up tightly, don't catch a cold from the wind." Zhou Chong withdrew his hand, turned around and gripped the handlebars. "I'll be riding pretty fast, so hold on tight."
"Okay." Jiang Wan nodded, and without hesitation, she leaned on Zhou Chong's back, wrapping her arms tightly around his waist. "Hold on tight."
Zhou Chong was slightly taken aback, and a beautiful smile appeared on his lips.
The wind howled in her ears. Jiang Wan huddled in the hood of her down jacket, her cheek pressed against Zhou Chong's back, and felt as if the whole world had fallen silent.
It was so quiet that she could hear her own heartbeat, thump, thump, faster and faster.
Was it because Zhou Chong was riding too fast that her adrenaline surged?
Jiang Wan didn't know, she just subconsciously hugged the person in front of her tighter.
-
Zhou Chong kept his word and parked the car downstairs at Jiang Wan's house in less than ten minutes.
"arrive."
"Okay, thank you." Jiang Wan jumped out of the back seat of the car and hurriedly said goodbye to him. "I don't have time to say more. I'm going upstairs now. See you at school tomorrow. Bye-bye."
After saying that, she turned and rushed into the stairwell.
Zhou Chong gripped the handlebars with both hands, leaned his long legs against the bike, supported himself on one foot, and turned to watch Jiang Wan's departing figure.
He only looked away when the figure disappeared around the corner, turned his bike around, and rode towards the gate of the residential area.
As Zhou Chong was leaving the residential area, a black Mercedes drove in. It looked familiar, so he turned his head to take another look.
However, the car windows were tinted dark, so he couldn't see the people inside. He only glanced at the license plate before looking away.
As he rode out of the residential area, he suddenly realized that it was Jiang Wan's father's car.
The father-in-law is sentimental. Ten years later, he couldn't bear to get rid of the old Mercedes-Benz, which was no longer in production, and it has been parked in the garage of Yujing No. 1 ever since.
He saw the car when he visited Jiang Ronghai's home, and even test-drove it once at Jiang Ronghai's strong recommendation, finding its performance to be stable.
Thinking of this, Zhou Chong turned around and glanced at Jiang Wan's residential area from afar.
Fortunately, he managed to get Jiang Wan home in time.
If it had been any later, he was afraid his future father-in-law would have chased him all over the neighborhood.
-
When Jiang Wan got home, before she even had time to take off her shoes, she shouted into the house, "Mom, I'm home!"
Standing on the balcony, Shan Tong heard Jiang Wan's voice, slowly turned away, and walked towards the living room. "You're back."
"Mom, why did you come out from the balcony?" Jiang Wan asked as she changed into her slippers. "Aren't you cold standing on the balcony in the middle of winter?"
"It's alright, I need some fresh air." Shan Tong smiled faintly, walked to Jiang Wan's side, looked at her with a somewhat complicated expression, and hesitated to speak.
Jiang Wan changed into her slippers and looked up to see her mother's rather complicated gaze. "Mom, why are you looking at me like that?"
"I..." Shan Tong opened her mouth, tentatively asking, "Wanwan, which classmate did you go to the city library with today?"
"My deskmate."
"Your deskmate..." Shan Tong paused, "...is he a boy or a girl?"
“He’s a boy.” Jiang Wan answered readily, then added after a moment’s thought, “My deskmate is the top student in the grade. He always does better than me in every exam. Teacher Fan said that we should learn from each other and make progress together through healthy competition.”
Shan Tong nodded thoughtfully. "I see."
"Mmm." Jiang Wan nodded obediently and smiled, waiting for her mother's further instructions.
After waiting a while, Shan Tong didn't ask any more questions. She just smiled at her and said, "Okay, put your backpack down and get ready to wash your hands and eat."
Jiang Wan paused slightly, then her smile deepened. "Okay."
Although she didn't know why her mother suddenly asked her that question, perhaps it was because she came home late today, she was right. Being first in the grade was indeed very persuasive to parents.
After dinner, Jiang Wan went back to her room early.
Dan Tong glanced at Jiang Wan's tightly closed door, walked to the sofa, pulled Jiang Ronghai, who was watching the evening news, up, and turned off the TV.
"Honey, I'm watching the news." Jiang Ronghai turned to look at her, puzzled.
"What are you looking at? I have something important to tell you." Shan Tong winked at him. "Come with me."
Jiang Ronghai, puzzled, followed her back to the room. "What's wrong? Why do we have to come back to the room to talk?"
Dan Tong closed the door, turned around, and said with a complicated expression, "This evening, I saw Wanwan coming home on the back of a boy's bicycle."
Upon hearing this, Jiang Ronghai immediately opened his mouth wide. "Huh?"
"However, the two of them didn't seem to be doing anything. The boy left after taking Wanwan home, and Wanwan went straight upstairs without saying a word downstairs."
Jiang Ronghai thought for a moment, "Then it sounds like nothing's wrong."
“Hmm.” Shan Tong nodded in agreement. “And I asked Wanwan, and that boy is her deskmate, the top student in the grade. They study together during the holidays, they’re very ambitious.”
"Isn't that a good thing?" Jiang Ronghai said with a smile.
“It’s a good thing, but I’m always worried…” Shan Tong paused, “Apart from Luo Xuan, I’ve never seen our daughter interact with any other boys. What do you think about her deskmate…”
"I know what you're worried about," Jiang Ronghai interrupted her with a smile. "Wife, don't worry too much. Our daughter hasn't shown any signs of anything yet, so why are you being so suspicious?"
"It's not that I'm being paranoid, I trust Wanwan." Shan Tong waved her hand. "I'm just curious to know what kind of person her deskmate is."
"Come to think of it, when I got home this evening, I did see a boy riding a bicycle leaving our neighborhood." Jiang Ronghai frowned and thought for a moment. "Was he riding a black mountain bike and wearing a black windbreaker?"
"Yes, yes, yes." Shan Tong nodded hurriedly, "He's tall, but I didn't get a good look at his face."
“I see clearly.” Jiang Ronghai nodded quite seriously. “He’s not bad looking, with delicate features and regular facial features.”
Shan Tong summarized, "A handsome young man with good grades?"
“It seems…” Jiang Ronghai stroked his chin, “that’s right.”
Suddenly, Shan Tong thought out of the blue that, regardless of whether there was any potential, her daughter had a pretty good eye for talent.
