Chapter 49 Reappearance of Civilization
Despite his calm demeanor, Wei Yanqing's marksmanship remained abysmal, as if all the zombies he had killed yesterday were a joke, and his skills hadn't improved at all.
Rong Yi could only lament that all his skill points were in his talent.
Wei Yanqing smiled brightly, "I emptied my magazine this time and took down one more zombie than yesterday."
Rong Yi: "..."
Suddenly, I didn't know what expression to make.
"Good job, I feel like their heads are harder than yesterday."
“Indeed.” Wei Yanqing sensed it when he collected the crystal cores. “Not only are their bones harder, but their flesh density has also increased. If this trend continues, ordinary bullets will be much less effective against them.”
He looked at his new teammate. The morning breeze brushed against her delicate face, and the wisps of hair on her forehead added a touch of gentleness to her fierce aura.
Rong Yi's eyes were clear and bright, as if the sunlight was absorbed by his pure black pupils. His slender, pale fingers had become the scythe of death, reaping a zombie with a single pull.
This was the first time he had encountered someone with such pure killing intent, directed only at the prey she had set her sights on.
A gust of wind swept by, blowing her long, brown hair to one side. After firing her bullets, Rong Yi noticed no movement beside her. Turning her head, she found Wei Yanqing staring at her. "What's wrong? Am I too handsome for you?"
Wei Yanqing nodded thoughtfully, his icy blue eyes full of seriousness. "Hmm, your killing intent is very strong."
Rong Yi chuckled, reloaded his bullets, and continued.
By noon, Wei Yanqing had collected all the crystal cores to prevent more zombies from approaching.
The mall plaza was piled with zombies. Wei Yanqing activated the alcohol barrel and poured the clear liquid onto the rotting corpses. The scene here could be described as a mountain of corpses and a sea of blood, but due to the characteristics of zombies, no blood splattered everywhere.
Rong Yi fired a shot at the pile of corpses, and flames shot up and spread rapidly. The smell of burning protein from the flames mixed with the gases from the fermentation of the corpses, forcing her to put on a mask.
The corpses were burning faster than they had anticipated, and the height of the mountain of corpses was decreasing at an almost visible rate. Occasionally, a gust of wind would blow away the ashes, but Wei Yanqing would block them with his hand.
The zombies seemed to fear the flames. After the mountain of corpses caught fire, they retreated, and gradually the zombies in the distance would avoid the area.
It's unclear how long this trait can last, but Rong Yi doesn't think they'll be afraid of fire forever.
Wei Yanqing's storage space was like a treasure trove, containing all sorts of things. All those ashes were stored in the bags he took out.
After tidying up the pile of ashes, the two didn't rush to leave, but instead went shopping in the mall.
The restaurant kitchen in the mall doesn't have many ingredients; most of them are freshly shipped in every morning. Now that the virus has broken out, where will the shipping come from?
The rest were mostly clothes. Rong Yi didn't plan to collect them all. The zombies near the mall might gather again, but not to the same scale as before. Someone would definitely come over then.
As for the gold and jade, Rong Yi and Wei Yanqing divided the work and collected them without leaving any for themselves.
Regardless of whether this instance is usable or not, there are people in Obsidian City willing to buy these.
"There's a large supermarket downstairs from the mall," Rong Yi pointed outside.
Wei Yanqing glanced at the bracelet. "There's plenty of space. Let's go."
The two went downstairs to the supermarket, which also had several floors. Since the doors were open, the zombies had already run out, saving them the trouble of cleaning up.
The fresh vegetables on the shelves had already rotted. After Rong Yi met Wei Yanqing at the mall, he was so preoccupied with the crystal cores that he completely forgot about the supermarket downstairs.
Besides fresh vegetables, they also bought all the other vegetables that could be stored for a long time and were still in good condition.
Next came daily necessities. Only a small portion of towels, soap, shampoo, etc. were left. Rong Yi went to the women's products section and left a small portion for the people who came later.
The two of them collected a small portion of the snacks, but these would not be as valuable as rice and flour in future transactions.
The food section was completely stocked with grains, and they even took the red beans, mung beans, and other beans on display, as well as the yogurt and milk by the wall.
Rong Yi opened the bag of the thawed dumplings and glutinous rice balls in the freezer to make sure they hadn't gone bad before putting them away.
Clothing and quilts were also collected, taking up more than half of the entire floor.
Wei Yanqing quickly found the cold storage room, which contained not only meat but also a large quantity of frozen dumplings and buns.
Rong Yi had limited storage space, and she wanted to leave more room for crystal cores, so she let Wei Yanqing take 80% of the supplies. She wasn't worried about him embezzling them, since anything other than crystal cores was just icing on the cake for her.
What she cared more about was how much storage space Wei Yanqing actually had.
By the time they were almost done, it was already evening. The two of them traveled light, carrying only ordinary backpacks.
The glass, which was more than ten centimeters thick, melted away, and they finally left the mall.
Less than two days seemed like a long time to Rong Yi in retrospect.
Through the second-floor window, she had already seen what the world looked like, but when she actually stepped out of the mall and stood on the horizon to look around, a sense of desolation and loneliness was everywhere.
The once bustling city was now deserted. In the past two days, as they dealt with the zombie horde, apart from the four people they encountered in the mall, they hadn't seen any strangers. Perhaps they were frightened by the zombie horde gathered there and had avoided them.
Wei Yanqing unfolded the map in his hand and pointed to one of the lines, "Find this road, and you can go directly to Jin'an District."
"It's not far from here." Rong Yi leaned closer to memorize the name of the road.
·
Before setting off, Rong Yi took out the defensive shield under his collar, the buckle popped open, and put in a few non-ranked crystal cores.
Wei Yanqing recognized what it was. "You're so skilled, why would you need this?"
Having witnessed Rong Yi effortlessly defeat a level one zombie, his agile and swift skills were deeply etched in my mind.
"It's not all for protection against damage." He fastened the buckle and put it back under his collar. "My clothes are waterproof and fireproof for rain and snow, but not for hair."
She doesn't like wearing helmets or other protective gear that obstructs her vision, so this energy-supported shield is the best choice.
Wei Yanqing recalled how he used his mental power to block out rain and snow during rainy weather, "It's quite convenient." He'll buy one after the dungeon ends.
There weren't many zombies on the road. Rong Yi only needed to raise his hand and shoot them in the head. Wei Yanqing would collect the crystal cores. Occasionally, Rong Yi would use his mental power to snap the necks of zombies.
"Can't you just take out their crystal cores directly?" Rong Yi had wanted to ask this before.
Wei Yanqing shook his head, "No, energy bodies like crystal cores that support life force can only be freely removed after the living being is killed."
"Are zombies even considered living creatures?" Rong Yi was extremely puzzled. In her eyes, zombies were just walking corpses.
"Even if there's biological instinct involved, I can only collect the crystal cores if the enemy is completely defeated and loses its vitality." As he spoke, the crystal cores floating in the air automatically fell into the bag at Wei Yanqing's waist.
Actually, the bags hanging on his sides weren't very big, but when Rong Yi looked at them, the image of a scavenger's snakeskin bag hanging on his waist popped into his mind.
Seeing this, she couldn't help but smile.
Wei Yanqing was puzzled, but seeing her staring at the bag with a smile, he asked, "What's wrong?"
Rong Yi looked up, his eyes meeting the other's slightly puzzled, icy blue pupils. "It's nothing, I just suddenly thought of something fun." He then changed the subject and asked, "Are you mixed race?"
