Chapter 52 Strange Tales in the Mountain Village

"It's probably the pigs they raise at home. My grandma lives alone and likes to raise pigs and chickens."

As Su Meng spoke, she imitated the long-haired man, picking up a piece of meat and putting it in her mouth.

The moment the meat entered her mouth, its scalding heat caught her off guard, her face instantly turning bright red, and she frantically fanned her mouth with her hand.

Even so, she couldn't bear to spit out the meat in her mouth.

I took a sip of my drink and said that I had noticed as soon as I entered the house that the old lady did not raise pigs or any poultry.

No sooner had I finished speaking than the woman in the group, who had been silent the whole time, suddenly blurted out, "Do you think we might be eating human flesh?"

This statement is like a boulder thrown into a calm lake, instantly creating ripples.

The once lively dinner table instantly fell into a deathly silence.

Everyone seemed to be frozen in place, their hands holding food stuck in mid-air.

All eyes turned to the few large pieces of meat remaining in the pot.

I glanced at them, then picked up a piece of meat and put it in my mouth.

"Handsome guy, aren't you...aren't you afraid this is..."

The long-haired man glanced around quickly, then lowered his voice and uttered two words: "Human flesh?"

I looked up: "It can't be human flesh, the texture of the flesh is wrong."

Having touched so many corpses, do you think I don't know whether they're human flesh or not?

As I finished speaking, I picked up a piece of meat and was about to eat it when I noticed that there seemed to be something shiny stuck to the meat.

Upon closer inspection, the person was immediately stunned.

This looks like half of a woman's fingernail!

The chopsticks in the long-haired man's hand fell to the ground with a "clatter".

Su Meng's eyes were wide open, her mouth slightly agape, and the blush from the burn still lingered on her face, but now it was replaced by fear.

Gao Qian tightly covered her mouth, her throat bobbing up and down, looking like she was about to vomit.

"Ha ha ha ha!"

Liu Junming suddenly burst into laughter, laughing until tears were streaming down his face.

"Look how scared you all are! Have you been watching too much 'The Untold Story'? That old lady was so old, she could barely walk properly, how could she kill someone? I was the one who threw that fingernail in there!"

As he spoke, he took out a women's nail art decoration card from his backpack, with a piece of the nail art missing from it.

Upon hearing this, everyone breathed a sigh of relief.

Su Meng's face turned red with anger. She stomped her feet and scolded, "Captain, you've gone too far! How could you make such a joke? You almost scared me to death!"

The long-haired man also stood up, pointing at Liu Junming's nose and cursing, "Old Liu, you're just being difficult! You only feel happy when everyone is in a state of panic, right? You scared the hell out of me!"

Gao Qian rolled her eyes: "Liu Junming, are you sick? How can you make jokes like that? I almost threw up just now."

Seeing the intense reaction from the crowd, Liu Junming scratched his head awkwardly and apologized repeatedly.

"I'm so sorry, I really just wanted to make a joke to lighten the mood. I didn't expect to scare everyone like this. It's my fault. I'll punish myself with three drinks."

"Come on, you!"

The long-haired man snatched the beer away: "Trying to find an excuse to drink a few more cans, huh? You're really trying to pull a fast one on me."

Although the atmosphere had eased, no one touched their chopsticks as they looked at the large pot of fragrant meat on the table.

I guess he has some psychological trauma.

During the conversation, I also learned that, apart from Liu Junming, all of these people were hiking novices and came from all sorts of jobs.

Su Meng, who is very cute, is a kindergarten teacher. Her students wanted to come out and relax during their vacation.

As for the long-haired man, he was a writer of supernatural novels who had come out to find inspiration.

The woman who spoke very little was a lawyer surnamed Zhou.

Su Meng also drank two cans of beer, her face flushed. She nudged me with her elbow and blinked, asking, "Handsome, what do you do?"

The others also looked on with curiosity.

I replied casually, "I work in the beauty industry."

The two grown men, Long Hair and Liu Junming, didn't react much, but Su Meng and Gao Qian were particularly excited, chattering incessantly around me.

Gao Qian, in particular, kept asking me whether she needed a nose job, and then said that she always felt the contours of her face were not quite symmetrical.

She asked me whether it would be better to use minimally invasive cosmetic procedures, such as hyaluronic acid injections or Botox injections, to make minor adjustments in her situation, or whether she should have a more thorough surgical procedure.

Even the aloof lawyer Zhou couldn't help but glance at me twice.

However, when I told them that I worked as a mortician at a funeral home, they both fell silent instantly.

Gao Qian moved the stool far away, afraid of getting any bad luck.

Unexpectedly, the long-haired guy perked up, moved a stool next to me, poured me a glass of wine, and put his arm around my shoulder, calling me "brother" repeatedly.

"Bro, you really work as a mortician at a funeral home? That's pretty scary, isn't it?"

I said it was alright.

Then he asked me if I had ever encountered a corpse that had risen from the dead or a vengeful spirit haunting the dead, so I could give him some material.

I thought to myself, how could there not be? If there wasn't, why would I have come all the way here?

Seeing the fearful yet expectant looks in their eyes, I almost couldn't resist taking off my clothes and showing them the lividity.

I said with a serious expression, "There is no such thing as ghosts or supernatural phenomena in this world. We should always uphold our faith in and respect for science and dispel ignorant ideas."

The long-haired man scoffed, looking bored.

But then Liu Junming lowered his voice and said, "Do you know why that old lady wouldn't let us into the village no matter what?"

Seeing everyone's eyes on him, Liu Junming spoke again: "Because this village is haunted, and a woman died here! Her body was dismembered!"

Hearing the words 'dismemberment of the body' sent a shiver down my spine.

I thought of Bai Su.

The people present were all young, and they loved listening to these kinds of supernatural stories, so they all gathered around.

"Before I came here, I had inquired about it. There is a special custom in this village when newlyweds hold a wedding. That is, they find a beautiful [technician] and [cleaner] to spend the night in the bridal chamber and help [clean]."

"They say this can drive away bad luck in the bridal chamber, so that the bride and groom can grow old together and have a son soon."

Su Meng tilted her head, blinked, and asked innocently, "What is a [technical worker]?"

I don't know what Gao Qian said to Su Meng, but Su Meng's face turned red instantly.

Liu Junming continued.

"I heard that during a wedding cleaning, things went too far and the bride was killed."

Attorney Zhou, who hadn't spoken until now, asked in confusion, "Wasn't it supposed to be the [technician] and the [cleaner] doing *that* in the bridal chamber? What does that have to do with the bride?"

Liu Junming lowered his voice: "Hiring [technical workers] was a later matter. Before this happened, the bride was a [worker]!"

Upon hearing this, everyone was stunned. The bride was a [worker]?

"Utterly absurd!" Attorney Zhou scoffed.

"What's even more absurd is yet to come!"

Liu Junming lowered his voice and said, word by word, "According to custom, the [cleaner] must be the groom's father!"
