Chapter 158 Negotiation

The system noticed Jiang Xu's confused expression gradually clearing as he questioned him. "I think you know who you are. Your lives were switched from the very beginning." After a pause, the mechanical voice sounded again, "I came here to change this switch, but some things went wrong. I'm sorry about that, and I've tried my best to restore things to their original state."

Jiang Xu nodded. "I came here for a year when I was 10 years old and then went back. Why was that?"

The system said, "That was a distortion of spacetime. At the age of 10, spacetime automatically switched, the orbit changed again, and you and he switched places for another year. But a year later, I needed to correct the orbital error, so I erased your memories."

Jiang Xu: "Why not just go with the flow? That way you'll have completed your mission, won't you?"

The system said, "This is against the rules; I must correct it according to the regulations."

Jiang Xu: "It's really hard not to believe it."

The system replied, "Believe me, I'm absolutely not lying."

Jiang Xu, "Do you know?"

System, "What?"

Jiang Xu looked at the illusory figure with a sullen expression, "I've known Gu Li since I was 10 years old. You've ruined such a great opportunity for us to be childhood sweethearts."

The system said, "Didn't I arrange for you two to meet again?"

Jiang Xu said, "As expected, we were bound to meet those Wang, Liu, Zhao, and a bunch of other people. I found that strange at the time." He suddenly looked at the system with a sidelong glance, "Doesn't that mean Jiang Xu is also bound to know them?"

System: "Would I arrange it that way?"

Jiang Xu said with unwavering conviction, “No, this wasn’t your arrangement.” He looked at the white ceiling and said, “This is our destiny.”

The system replied, "Well done. The good is fate, and the bad is my arrangement, right?"

Jiang Xu nodded, "You've gotten to the point. You've improved a bit more."

The system replied, "Okay, thank you for the compliment."

Jiang Xu, "I have another question."

"System, is this the last question?"

Jiang Xu smiled and looked at the illusory figure. "Maybe," he said without pausing, "Since you don't seem to have any objections, I asked why you chose Jiang Xu as your host?"

The system fell silent, and remained silent for a long time.

Jiang Xu sensed something was amiss. "Could this be the little mishap you mentioned in the middle?"

The system says, "Bingo, you got it right, darling."

"Heh," Jiang Xu curled the corners of his lips and said ruthlessly, "Switch back now, stop pretending to be an idiot."

"That's a glitch!" the system retorted.

Jiang Xu: "Hmm, looks like you're working fine."

System: I seem a little angry, but there's nothing I can do.

Jiang Xu said, "Speak up. Confess and you'll be punished severely, resist and you'll still be punished severely. It's the same."

The system's illusory form seemed even more ethereal. "Is it possible that the host I want to choose is you?"

Jiang Xu said, “You can see a bit of that attitude now, but it’s not obvious.” He looked the illusory figure up and down. “You’re pretending to be quite mature. How could you get that wrong?”

The system replied, "People always need a process of maturing, and I am the mature version now."

Jiang Xu said, "Kids shouldn't always imitate adults. You don't seem very mature yourself."

System, "You figured it out?"

Jiang Xu didn't really see anything, but he nodded with a threatening smile.

The system paused for a moment before speaking, "According to you, I'm not familiar with this job since it's my first time working here, so please be understanding."

Jiang Xu still smiled, "Speak normally."

System: "Okay."

Jiang Xu thought for a moment and then said, "Tell me how you got things back on track."

Without hesitation, the system said, "Your personalities are completely different. I quickly realized that I had signed the wrong agreement, but there are conditions for unbinding. I can only prepare for it slowly."

Jiang Xu, "What are you preparing?"

The system delivered the cruel words calmly: "His suicide."

Jiang Xu frowned slightly. "Is this reasonable?"

The system said, "These are the conditions of your exchange. I just made it sound more beautified so that he would think you were just replacing him temporarily, and that we could switch back later if the opportunity arises."

Jiang Xu: "This beauty filter is way too overpowered."

The system replied, "Maybe a little, but as I said before, it was all his own choice. I mentioned the possible consequences: he wanted you to smooth things over so he could reap the benefits."

Jiang Xu: "I guess so."

System: "The proverb is indeed true. He tried to steal a chicken but lost the rice instead. The time I planned has permanently sent him to the world he was meant to go, and you have officially returned to your place."

Jiang Xu thought for a moment and then asked, "Is this the balance of the world you were talking about?"

The system replied, "It's not that exaggerated. My existence is just to fix minor bugs."

Jiang Xu: "Then why do you make it sound so impressive?"

"Hehe," the system chuckled, its mechanical voice sounding dry, "Isn't that just a way to fool young people? Sounds impressive, right?"

Jiang Xu shook his head, "It's just very cringeworthy."

The system was hit with another blow: "That's pretty much it. Can we sign now?"

Jiang Xu said, "If everything is back to normal, why would we need to sign anything?" His tone was no longer joking. He didn't want people constantly pulling him into conversations like this. Even though people might see him in a relationship, there are always some things about relationships that are inconvenient to see. He wasn't planning on signing something and having to carry it with him.

The system sensed Jiang Xu's wariness and immediately squatted down in front of him. "I'm just signing in to earn some points. You see, I made a mistake before and didn't earn enough points here. If I don't earn enough, I'll have to do other things, which is very hard work."

Jiang Xu changed the subject, "Do you think you're mature enough?"

The system didn't expect Jiang Xu to ask something else, but it still replied, "That's enough... I guess."

Jiang Xu shook his index finger. "No, not enough. You see, you're not sure, are you?" He smiled and continued, "How about I give you another lesson?"

The system seemed a little confused. "What do you mean by 'attending class'? Attending class shouldn't be done at school. Besides, we've all received professional training, and our knowledge is solid."

Jiang Xu's eyes flashed with a sharp light. "This lesson I'm going to teach you is called," he paused, "the harsh realities of society."

System, "Hmm?"

Jiang Xu said, "You have to take responsibility for your own mistakes and earn your points yourself. Don't think about relying on an excellent host like me. This matter ends here. You said you're going to work, so you can't waste too much time on one job. Start the next one right away."

The system replied, "But that means I'll have to take on another mission in a different world."

Jiang Xu, "Do you still have any attachment to this world?"

The system thought for a moment, and the illusory figure shook its head.

Jiang Xu, "So you want to watch me date all the time?"

The system imagined the scene and felt it was too cloying, so it promptly shook its head.

Jiang Xu said, "I'm not signing a contract with you, so you won't have any regrets. Let's just say goodbye together."

The system felt it was being led astray, so it tried to revisit the initial point of conversation, asking, "Why don't you sign a contract with me?"
