Chapter 65 Spend Time Together
The morning light penetrated the gauze curtains of the Tang family courtyard, casting tiny spots of light on the head of Tang Ximian's bed.
When Tang Li knocked on the door for the third time, he finally heard a rustling sound from inside: "Lazy pig, grandma just called and said she left some sweet osmanthus candied lotus root for you. If you don't get up, I'll go by myself."
"Ah? Who turned off my alarm clock? Why didn't I hear any sound?" Tang Ximian hurriedly got up to wash and change clothes.
"I closed it. You slept too late last night, and now is the perfect time to go. The grandmas also said there's no rush and told you to have breakfast first."
When the car drove into the Qingwa Lane where my grandmother's house was, Ye Shuyun's figure leaning against the vermilion lacquered doorpost waiting was particularly eye-catching.
The uncle, wearing a dark woolen coat and a smile beneath his gold-rimmed glasses, saw Tang Ximian sticking his head out of the car window and immediately raised the brown paper bag in his hand: "Whose favorite sweet osmanthus lotus root is this?"
"I love it. Happy New Year, uncle. Wish you good fortune and prosperity. Give me the red envelope." Tang Ximian happily ran over to catch the bag of sweet-scented osmanthus candied lotus root, and wished his uncle a happy new year.
"Come here, kid, I've packed a big red envelope for you."
"Thank you, uncle. I hope you can find your partner soon."
"Give me back the red envelope."
"I don't……"
Hearing the noise at the door, the carved wooden door of the old house creaked open, and grandma came out tremblingly with a sandalwood cane: "My dear grandson is here."
Tang Ximian's eyes instantly turned red - there were more white hairs on her grandmother's temples, but the smile at the corners of her eyes was still as gentle as in her memory.
Tang Ximian quickly reached out to support her, "Grandma, slow down, I won't run away."
"Okay, okay, let grandma see if you've lost weight again."
Grandma's wrinkled hand gently stroked Tang Ximian's cheek, her fingertips trembling slightly.
Grandpa stood aside, his cloudy eyes sparkling with light, his face looking at him lovingly. He patted Tang Li's shoulder and said, "Good boy, you've grown taller again."
"Okay, okay, it's cold outside, let's go inside and talk, come on."
Ye Shuyun's hands were full of gifts and supplements brought by the two brothers Tangxi Miantangli.
A group of people went in talking and laughing.
In the main hall, Tang Ximian's parents sat upright on the armchairs. His mother was still wearing the pearl necklace, and his father's purple clay teapot was emitting curls of steam. Both of them had cold eyes, as if the warm scene before them had nothing to do with them.
Seeing them come in, he showed no expression. He simply put down his teacup and said calmly, "You're becoming more and more unruly. You even need the elders to greet you. It's been so long since we've met, don't you even know how to greet me?"
Tang Ximian paused, chose to ignore them, and continued chatting with his uncle.
"Tangxi Mian!"
"Why are you yelling? The child came all the way here and you don't even show any concern for him. Now you're scolding him?" Grandma said back impatiently.
"Let's eat. The children must be hungry too." Grandpa waved his hand helplessly and told them to prepare to eat.
At the dinner table, grandma kept putting food into Tang Ximian and Tang Li's bowls: "Eat more, look at how thin their arms are."
"Tang Li should eat more too, he's still growing!"
Grandpa silently piled the freshly peeled shrimps into his bowl and gently patted the back of his hand with his calloused hands.
Tang Ximian lowered her head and ate her rice, her eyes burning. Suddenly, she heard her father's cold and hard voice: "You are so old, and you are still so spoiled."
The air froze instantly.
Grandma suddenly put down her chopsticks, her voice trembling: "What did you say? This is my grandson, what's wrong with me loving him?"
Grandpa also put down his wine glass, his cloudy eyes filled with anger: "You don't love your child, and you don't allow others to love you?"
Ye Shuyun placed the removed crab meat on two plates, and placed a bowl for Tang Ximian and Tang Li respectively. Then he spoke slowly, "Brother-in-law, what qualifications do you have to blame Mianmian?"
Tang Li calmly added a piece of tender pork ribs to Tang Ximian's bowl and whispered, "Try this, it suits your taste."
"Okay, brother, you eat too."
Tang Ximian took a bite, and the aroma of meat mixed with warmth instantly filled his heart. The coldness in his heart also dissipated a lot because of the care of his family members.
Lunch passed in silence after the quarrel, and Tang Ximian's parents left with a bad look on their faces after finishing their meal.
In the afternoon, the sun was shining brightly. Grandma pulled Tang Ximian to sit on the rattan chair in the backyard and rocked her gently.
"Mianmian," Grandma handed him the sour plum juice, "Don't listen to your parents. In our hearts, you will always be the most precious. Of course, your brother is too. You two are our pride."
Grandpa sat beside them, carefully pruning the branches with his reading glasses, and looked up at Tang Ximian from time to time with a kind smile.
Ye Shuyun came over with a few scrolls in her arms and stuffed them into Tang Ximian's arms: "Look, these are the treasures your uncle found for you. They are all painted by your favorite artists."
Then he took out a gift box from his pocket and gave it to Tang Li.
"Thank you, uncle." Tang Li was stunned for a moment, then took it with a smile.
"Good boy." Ye Shuyun stood on tiptoe, hugged her nephew's shoulders and patted him hard.
Seeing that he was about to fall, everyone started laughing.
