Xu Tingchuan held her tightly, but found that he could do nothing. He could only lower his head and gently wipe away the tears on her cheeks, murmuring to comfort her: "It's all over, it's all over. No one can hurt you anymore."
Ni Sitian sniffed, cried for a long time, and gradually calmed down. With red eyes, she looked at him and said, "Since we've already talked about it, let me tell you why Qin Mubei and I broke up."
Xu Tingchuan had a premonition that this would be another scar for Ni Sitian, and he didn't want to know.
He regretted forcing her to confront love, for making her peel herself apart like this, leaving her bleeding and vulnerable.
"I used to think that after having had that experience, I would never fall in love with anyone, but like other girls, I experienced my first crush at thirteen or fourteen." Ni Sitian laughed self-deprecatingly and continued, "Back then, I foolishly had a crush on him for two years before finally mustering the courage to confess. Surprisingly, it went smoothly, and we started dating. However, although we were dating, because he was already in university and I was still in high school, we didn't see each other very often. I just never imagined he would actually..."
"Stop talking." Xu Tingchuan could probably guess the reason for their breakup. He didn't want to continue tearing her heart apart. He hugged her and gently patted her, murmuring, "Don't say anymore, I don't want to know."
Ni Sitian didn't shed a tear. She leaned on Xu Tingchuan's shoulder, her eyes slowly becoming unfocused and confused.
After a long while, she spoke again: "Xu Tingchuan, I really don't know if I will have the courage to do it a second time."
"It's alright, take your time, I'll wait for you." Xu Tingchuan lowered his head and kissed the center of her hair.
Ni Sitian looked up into his eyes and bit her lip: "Why are you so good to me?"
If he had been any worse, perhaps she would never have thought about love again, and perhaps her life would have been simpler.
"Silly girl, we're husband and wife." Xu Tingchuan rubbed her head.
Ni Sitian raised her hand and hugged Xu Tingchuan's neck, resting her chin on his shoulder. Her nose was stuffy, and she said in a muffled voice, "But maybe I won't get the reward you want."
"Then don't expect anything in return. Just be yourself." Xu Tingchuan gently patted her back.
"Xu Tingchuan, you must have done it on purpose, on purpose..." Ni Sitian had been crying for too long, her eyes were swollen, a little sore, and a little tired. She closed her eyes as she spoke: "You were deliberately being so nice to me, trying to make me fall in love with you, you bad guy, how could you be so bad..."
Xu Tingchuan felt her voice fading into the distance. Looking down, he saw that the little girl had indeed fallen asleep.
He bent down, brushed her hair aside, and kissed her swollen eyes, feeling a deep pang of heartache.
After a while, once she was fast asleep, he gently picked her up, ignoring the unfinished documents on the table, and walked straight out of the office.
Back home, Xu Tingchuan gently placed her on the bed, wrung out a towel and covered her eyes, then washed her hands and feet.
He noticed that her hands and feet were unusually cold. After lying down on the bed, he put her hands in his arms and her feet between his, holding her close and trying his best to warm her.
Ni Sitian felt the heat in her sleep and snuggled into Xu Tingchuan's arms, hugging him and gently rubbing against him before finding a very comfortable position to continue sleeping.
