Chapter 2 Why Me?

"Mommy! Daddy forgot my dance shoes at home again today, which made Teacher Linda unhappy." The little girl pouted her tiny mouth, which looked like it could hold an oil bottle, blinked her big, pitiful eyes, and wore two cute little tufts of hair on her head.

"Wanwan, Daddy knows he was wrong. Daddy will definitely not forget next time." The tall man squatted down with a guilty look on his face, picked up the little girl in front of him, and coaxed her gently, "Please forgive Daddy, okay?" After saying that, he kept winking at his wife beside him.

Song Yun tucked two strands of hair behind her ears, her delicate oval face glistening with fine beads of sweat. Beneath her small, straight nose, her pink lips were rosy and glossy, and a red mole on her nose added to her alluring charm.

With her peach blossom eyes slightly lowered, she pinched the little face that resembled her own and said softly, "If Daddy forgets again, shall we punish him by making him wear a swan dress and dance?"

"Okay, okay, let Daddy be a little swan too!"

...

"Wanwan, your uncle and aunt will no longer be able to take care of you. Let me take care of you for the rest of my life, okay?" At the funeral, the tall and upright man took off his glasses. His noble and aloof face revealed no emotion in his eyes. Feng Yunzhou stepped forward and supported Shi Wan's slightly trembling shoulders.

Suppressing the pain in her heart and the physical agony, she turned around and saw Shi Wan's tearful eyes. Feng Yunzhou seemed to be stimulated by something, his lips pressed tightly together, his dark eyes unfathomable.

"Brother Yunzhou, I don't have a mom and dad anymore." Large tears fell and landed on Feng Yunzhou's arm.

At Feng Yunzhou's request, Shi Wan finally decided to return to China with him.

After returning to the capital, Shi Wan successfully entered the largest private kindergarten in the capital, thanks to her double doctoral degree from Lexington College and her experience with the Royal Dance Troupe of Country Y.

Feng Yunzhou, the head of the Feng family in the capital, returned to the Feng family, which was on the verge of being torn apart by other powerful families, at the repeated requests of the old lady Feng. In just one year, he cleansed up the entire Feng family, took back all the property that other powerful families had seized, and eliminated several collateral branches that intended to usurp the power of the main branch.

The Feng family once again reached the pinnacle of power in the capital, joining the ranks of several prominent families that controlled the city's economic industries. The outside world remained tight-lipped about the ruthless and decisive patriarch of the Feng family. The media, both curious and eager to dig deeper into his story, always found themselves in the lurch of news, only to be met with either a car accident, a family incident, or company bankruptcy.

However, a rumor has always circulated in the capital that the Feng family heir has a "white moonlight" (a term of endearment for a woman who is unattainable love) who lives abroad. For this "white moonlight," Feng Yunzhou has rejected all marriage proposals. The exaggerated media coverage hasn't deterred the capital's socialites; instead, they've become even more eager to marry this mysterious man, all vying to become the matriarch of the Feng family.

"The Feng and Lin families will be engaged next week, and all media will be invited to attend." Feng Yunzhou's assistant, Chen Xing, dropped this bombshell at the press conference before leaving.

One stone stirs up a thousand ripples. That afternoon, the front pages of major media outlets read: "The Feng and Lin families are about to have a happy ending!", "President Feng finally wins the heart of his beauty!", and "Feng Yunzhou's white moonlight is actually the eldest daughter of the Lin family!"

Ji Meng only learned that her boyfriend was getting married, but the bride was someone else, after Ji Meng forwarded the news to Shi Wan.

With a skeptical mindset, I went online to check all the previous information about him, and only then did I learn about his status in the capital and that he had a first love.

Shi Wan belatedly sent him a message: "Are you coming back tonight?"

"Um"

Shi Wan was overjoyed, as it was her birthday.

She didn't believe the rumors circulating online, so she still held onto a sliver of hope and wanted to tell him the good news she had just received.

That evening, she prepared a table full of dishes and made some simple decorations at home, waiting for Feng Yunzhou to return.

She happily greeted him as he entered. But when she saw the person behind him, she suddenly froze, a hint of panic flashing across her delicate and beautiful face, her hands gripping the back of the chair clenching so tightly they turned white.

She tried to question Feng Yunzhou, but no sound came out.

Feng Yunzhou broke the silence first, "Wanwan, this is Jiang Le. She will be staying here for a while."

Shi Wan frowned as she stared at the girl with the high bulge in her belly. Her originally bright smile turned into a suppressed one, and her throat felt blocked as a salty, fishy taste rose up.

Shi Wan's mind went blank. She didn't know when she got back to her room. She vomited in the bathroom, her eyes slightly red.

Feng Yunzhou frowned as he stood behind her, suppressing his impatience. He wanted to step forward and support the girl's thin shoulders.

But thinking of the person in his heart, Feng Yunzhou stopped and said in a deep voice, "Are you feeling unwell?"

Looking at the man's indifferent expression, Shi Wan shook her head blankly, "It's nothing."

"Yunzhou, is what Assistant Chen said in today's news true?"

The man's strong eyebrows furrowed, his gaze turning somewhat cold, but he did not speak.

After a long silence, Shi Wan broke the silence, "Yunzhou, why me?"

Feng Yunzhou paused slightly at Shi Wan's sudden question, remained silent for a few seconds, and then said in a tone devoid of emotion, "You look a lot like her."

“I grew up with her, and you are just like her, you love dancing and you love shining on stage.”

"She was just like you, always smiling. She used to be so happy, sharing her favorite things with me and liking to lean on my shoulder... We clearly had the chance to walk down the aisle and become each other's support."

“I searched for her for many years after she went abroad, and I met you when I was about to despair. Now that she’s back, I can’t let her leave me to suffer again.”

She bit her lip tightly, trying to hold back the tears in her eyes, her throat trembling as she choked out, "From the very beginning, did you never intend to walk this path with me? Even if I were pregnant..."

Feng Yunzhou glanced at Shi Wan, interrupting her, his tone calm but seemingly implying, "I will not allow any woman other than Zhiyu to give birth to my child."

Shi Wan's eyes reddened, tears welled up in them, and she bit her red lips tightly, a salty taste spreading in her mouth.

Feng Yunzhou was still afraid that she would say those words, so he deliberately interrupted her to show his attitude. Shi Wan seemed to understand his intention and did not say anything more.

"Then what about Jiang Le?"

"She... and I don't have the kind of relationship you're thinking of," Feng Yunzhou said calmly, explaining as if he didn't want Shi Wan to misunderstand, even though there was no need to explain.

“Okay…” Shi Wan stared at his calm and indifferent face for a moment, then suddenly stood up and went upstairs.

In the following days, Feng Yunzhou settled Jiang Le in the backyard of the villa, and he never saw Shi Wan when he returned.

Shi Wan seemed to be avoiding him and everyone else; even the nanny who regularly came to visit hadn't seen Shi Wan since.

Meanwhile, major media outlets in the capital continued to provide daily, real-time coverage of the engagement between the Feng and Lin families.

Shi Wan stopped paying attention to online media and any reports about the Feng family and Feng Yunzhou. Apart from contacting her best friend Ji Meng, she blocked all social media.
