Chapter 21 Victim Guilt Theory
Even though the police were furious, Zhou Zhenxing didn't call back immediately.
During this second period of waiting, the atmosphere was incredibly oppressive.
Su Jin sat listlessly in a chair in the corner, looking pitiful.
Ring ring ring!
Finally, the landline rang.
Before picking up the microphone, the police officer took a deep breath to calm himself down.
"Hello, this is Zhou Zhenxing."
The man's deep voice came through the telephone line.
"This is the Fenglin County Police Station. Are you Comrade Su Jin's spouse?" The police officer confirmed his identity first.
"Yes. What happened to her?"
Zhou Zhenxing's tone was indifferent; even when inquiring about Su Jin's situation, there was no trace of concern or care in his voice.
The police officer frowned and looked at Su Jin, genuinely feeling indignant on her behalf. "Your husband was almost raped, and he's in the police station right now."
"Rape?" Zhou Zhenxing's voice finally showed emotion. "Is she alright?"
However, this feeling was fleeting, because the police said "almost," which meant that it didn't actually happen.
"She's frightened. Do you want to talk to her now?" The police officer didn't immediately explain the case but instead asked for his opinion.
Zhou Zhenxing seemed not to have heard him and continued to ask, "Has that criminal been caught?"
The police officer's face was taut. Although he was very dissatisfied with his indifference, he still chose to continue, "It was Zhao Zhihu from your village who, along with two other people, stabbed one of the other people during the violence. Zhao Zhihu and the other one ran away."
There was a brief silence on the microphone.
Just as the police were about to lose their temper, Zhou Zhenxing spoke up again, "Zhao Zhihu is a local bully in our village. He usually bullies everyone in the village. This time he tried to hurt my wife. Please make sure to arrest him!"
"Don't worry, this is our job, and we will absolutely not let any criminals get away with it!" The police officer emphasized as he said this.
"Of course I trust you. Officer, could you please give the phone to my wife?"
Zhou Zhenxing finally thought of Su Jin.
Su Jin couldn't hear what Zhou Zhenxing said, but she could still guess a thing or two from the conversation between the police and him.
She only got up and walked over when the police officer gestured to her with a microphone.
He put the microphone to his ear and whispered "hello".
"How did you end up provoking Zhao Zhihu?"
The first thing Zhou Zhenxing said to her wasn't out of concern for her situation, but rather a chilling question.
Victim blaming.
Su Jin tightened her grip on the microphone slightly, a hint of mockery flickering deep in her eyes.
The next second, her eyes reddened, and even her voice became slightly choked.
"I didn't provoke him; he was lustful."
Where did this happen? Do Mom and Dad know? Were they frightened?
Zhou Zhenxing's second sentence was about his concern for his parents.
Su Jin's mind raced. Why would he ask his father if he was frightened?
“I’m not at home, I’m afraid my mom will worry, so I won’t tell her. The police station needs a family member’s signature, that’s why they called you.”
"Okay, I understand. You can give the phone to the police officer."
Su Jin deliberately avoided mentioning her deceased father-in-law, and Zhou Zhenxing didn't detect anything unusual.
The police officer and Wang Baozhu nearby listened intently; Su Jin's words alone were enough to suffocate them.
After such a terrible thing happened, the husband didn't show any concern for his wife at all from beginning to end.
