"Four hours is up." Marlena smirked as they hauled the boat back to the dock. "Three King Salmons. That should be good enough."
Her older brother chuckled. "I think father spoiled you too much."
"Spoiled?"
"I know you like that guy. You really think a guy like that would like you?"
"What’s not to like?" Marlena smirked. She was confident that she could get Matthew’s attention. "Males are attracted to confident women. I doubt a man like that, in this generation would still fall for someone weak."
"Unless they are sadists?"
Marlena laughed. "Right..."
"So? You plan to win the competition then what, ask the man out? Isn’t that too vulgar?"
"Yet attractive. Women who know what they want are definitely better than someone who doesn’t."
"And you think he would leave his date for you?"
"Why not? I am definitely better. And can you please stop spoiling my fun? Do you even remember the last time that a man refused me?"
Her brother, Dale rolled his eyes. As a matter of fact, not many people had the courage to refuse his sister. As someone who represented Alaska in the last Miss USA pageant, Marlena wasn’t only beautiful. She had the brains and a body to die for. Moreover, she loved sports. Fishing, golf and football were her favorites. She swimmed and skated and danced.
Dale didn’t like to say it but Marlena was a catch.
Not many people would dare refuse her advances.
Suffice to say, the woman always got what she wanted.
"Hm? They are not yet here?" Marlena looked around. "It’s been four hours?"
"Maybe they didn’t catch one? Both are beginners, right?" Dale asked.
"Who cares?"
After the boat reached the dock, everyone immediately welcomed the two.
"What took you so long?" Their father, Carlos asked.
"What do you mean?"
"Well... Mr. Graydon and Ava arrived about an hour ago. They are already cooking their salmon. I guess we will have a feast tonight."
"Wait... they already came back?" Marlena scowled. fɾeewebnoveℓ.co๓
"Yes."
"Why?"
"They caught their fish. They thought they didn’t need to catch more."
"But what about the competition?"
"Oh... don’t worry we made sure to weigh the fish before we started prepping them."
"Dale, go ahead and weigh ours." Marlena ordered. "Where are they now?" Of course, she was very confident that they would win this challenge.
"Bonfire... they are grilling ... you only caught three?" Carlos frowned.
"What do you mean? Those were large Salmons."
"Not as large as theirs."
"Father... you mean they caught more?"
"Five. All bigger than this. Are you sure this is all you’ve got?"
Ernesto, who was behind Carlos, laughed.
"It looks like we are going to win Carlos."
"We aren’t sure yet. What if ours is heavier?"
"That can’t be. These are smaller ones." Carlos sighed. "I guess they got lucky, huh."
"No. That’s impossible. How could they win? I thought they don’t know how to fish?"
"You ’assumed’ they didn’t know how to fish." Carlos said. "Well... I will weigh them with Ernesto. For now... go ahead and join them. Your friends are there too."
Marlena glared at her brother before stomping her feet off.
It didn’t take her a few minutes to find the bonfire that her father was talking about.
"I expected to see everyone here..." Marlena said.
"Marlena... what took you so long?" One of her friends asked.
"Must be that hard to catch some fish huh?" Someone from Ernesto’s group said.
"Well... we agreed to fish for four hours."
"They came back after catching five salmons. Can you believe that? Who catches five Salmons that huge?"
"I know!"
"I haven’t seen a salmon like that before."
"Hey... I know it’s season for Salmons but that one..."
"I am so excited to have a taste."
Marlena ignored everyone’s comments as she walked towards the log where Matthew and Ava was sitting. The two were whispering something to each other. They didn’t even look at her even when they heard someone called her name.
Did this mean Matthew wasn’t interested in her?
Hard to say.
After all, men always act good when they are around their woman.
"So... I heard you caught something big." Marlena had a smile on her face as she looked at Matthew. Of course, she didn’t waste her time acknowledging the woman sitting next to Matthew.
"You are blocking the light." Matthew responded.
"I’m sorry?"
"Would you mind moving?" Matthew gestured her to move to the side instead.
"I— "
Marlena speechlessly moved to the side. Did the man really just—
She cleared her throat.
"About the Salmon..." Marlena could feel her cheeks turned hotter. And this wasn’t because the man was good looking. It was because he just embarrassed her in front of her friends!
Marlena didn’t have to look around to know that all of her friends were now looking at her.
"I didn’t know you guys were an expert. My father couldn’t stop talking about it."
"It’s our first time." Ava said smugly.
"Oh please... no need to be humble. A first timer wouldn’t be able to catch a big salmon."
"Normal first timers can’t." Ava said.
What’s that supposed to mean?
Marlena chewed on her lower lip. Unable to say what was on her mind. She wanted to talk to Matthew but the man wasn’t showing interest in talking to her.
"Is that some... marshmallows?" she asked.
"Yes." Ava answered. "Look... do you need something?"
"I—" What the hell? These people weren’t friendly at all! Marlena could only complain inwardly. "No. I was just going to ask when are you available for the tour? I mean... the property and the room with the jacuzzi.."
"Oh. Nora and the rest can do it."
"I’m sure you don’t know this but our lodge won awards in the past and it is considered.."
"It’s alright. We’re not that interested." Matthew cut her off.
Hearing this, Marlena felt like she was about to explode. She walked towards Dale who just arrived with their father.
"You look like you’ve eaten some lemon rind," Dale said.
"Did you hear that?"
"I told you... maybe he’s different."
"He’s not." Marlena said. Men just want one thing from different women. And she meant, all men! There was no way that Matthew wouldn’t entertain the thought of fucking her!
