Chapter 162: The New Kings

"What the hell is going on Jude?" Leonardo Caro yelled the moment Matthew left the office.

"I don’t know! How should I know? And why the hell are you here? I thought you were in Japan?"

"I came because of the Lycan. We expected him to come after we took Ava."

"You took Ava?"

"Yes."

"And you didn’t tell me?"

"You are compromised."

"What?"

"You used to work together with Ava and I knew you were quite lenient on her."

"That is not true!"

"I know about your silent competitions and I also know she beat your ass every time. I can understand your feelings, son. Now sit down and pour me that wine." Leonardo loosened his tie as he let out a sigh. "I never expected the Lycan to be this... forceful."

"I told you the Lycans like Ava. Did you really expect him to just let her go just because it was Trillium that took Ava?"

"I didn’t. But to threaten the whole shifter and witch community? That is absurd."

"What is absurd is you picking up Ava without even informing me!"

"I already told you— "

"I am still Ava’s direct head! How could you just—"

"And I am your direct head!"

"Father—"

"The Deputy Director got ahold of what happened and is now interested to know what she knew."

"What?"

"I am hoping she won’t tell them anything."

"So you are saying it was the Deputy Director who picked her up and not... Amore and the Elders?"

"You are right." Leonardo sighed. "I just informed them on my way here. Just as I expected, the Deputy Director didn’t inform them about the matter."

"Then what would happen if they put Ava in the facility?"

"Oh they will."

"And?"

"She needs to die, son."

"What?" Jude’s face turned ugly. "What are you talking about?"

"It is too risky. She knew about the Amore and the Elders. She needs to disappear."

"What about Mr. Graydon?"

"What about him?"

"His threats..."

"Are mere threats. There is no use in listening to a love sick man. Besides... we are going to make it look like an accident."

"A what?"

"This matter no longer concerns us. I thought we could use her because she did our dirty work and cleaned up after herself. And we can leverage her against Samuel. And— "

"Wait... what are you talking about?" Jude asked, confused. "What leverage? You— Don’t tell me that Samuel Sutton agreed to go to Cuba on his own accord because of... Ava?"

"Did you really think we could force him to go there?"

"What?" The more Jude listened to his father’s words, the more confused he became. "I thought—"

"Well you are wrong. There are a lot of things that you do not know." Leonardo finished his wine and gestured for another cup of alcohol.

"What about the Lycans?"

"That is not our problem anymore. Ava died after the Deputy Director arrested her. We don’t have the ability to control accidents."

"Father... I still think this is wrong."

"What is wrong is letting that woman live. Look... She is nothing but a useless piece. You have to look at the bigger picture, the game isn’t even starting yet."

"Bigger Picture..."

"And that is to eliminate the Lycans and create a normal society where witches and shifters can live with humans..."

"You— "

"The Lycan’s existence has been a problem to both witches and other shifters. They are arrogant, powerful and selfish. They look down on everyone and just think about their own survival. They don’t want to live with humans and— "

"Aren’t we living with humans now?"

"A little acknowledgement wouldn’t hurt."

"Humans would never acknowledge something that — something like us." Jude said.

"And we are going to change their minds."

"What?" What the hell is this absurdity? "How?"

"You will know soon."

"Father— "

"You have to understand. We are doing this for the future of our species. If we keep our species a secret, then our end is going to happen in the next few years. The shifter’s blood inside our body is losing its abilities. We need a solution and I— together with the others— believe that we can do it if we work with humans."

"That is impossible."

Leonardo shrugged. "Humans are ambitious creatures. They would want the power that we hold."

"So?"Slowly Jude’s eyes widened. "Hold on... the Hybrids."

"We are going to give them what they want."

Jude felt goosebumps around his body. His hand felt cold, chilly. All this time, he got it wrong. The witches didn’t just want to be strong. They wanted to change the whole system.

If the witches were planning to use the humans against Lycans then there was a possibility that — "Father, don’t you think that the witches are using us?"

Leonardo looked at his son. "You think so?"

"The only ones who will benefit from all this... are the witches."

"So you don’t think that the Werelions will benefit from this?"

"I—"

"Think Jude... Without the Lycans... who do you think can stop the Lions?"

"You—"

Leonardo only responded with a smile. "Isn’t it time that we reclaim our rightful seat?"

"So what about Ava?"

"As I said... she will die. But we have to make it look like an accident."

"Father... I think this is wrong."

Instead of saying a word, Leonardo just responded with a smile. He finished another glass of wine before he said, "You are not yet ready."

"What?"

"You are not yet ready to hear the plan..."

"What plan?’

Again, his father only smiled.

"What plan... father?"

"Alright, I have to leave for now. I still have some business to attend to."

"Wait... what plan are you talking about?"

"I will tell you... " Leonardo got up and fixed his suit. "When the time comes. For now... just watch everything unfold. Soon, the Lycans will vanish. They will become hunted. And will become a memory. While we... we become the new Kings."

With that, Leonardo slowly walked out of his son’s office with a treacherous smile on his face.
