Chapter 163: I Owe The Man My Life

Ava Woods

Ava felt her hand getting colder as the minutes passed by.

She glanced at her watch and realized she had been here for more than two hours now. She stared at the two way mirror in front of her. She couldn’t help but wonder who was watching her.

She pursed her lips.

She closed her eyes then slowly extended her senses. To no avail.

They were using handcuffs with iron and even the chair and the table in front of her was made of iron. The door and walls might be made with iron too.

But this was something that she already expected.

This time, she thought about the things that Shaman Gaas told her about lucid dreams or dream walking. The old man assured her that she could use her abilities even if she was surrounded by Iron. Of course, she found it hard to believe the old man. After all, Iron is a witch’s ultimate weakness.

Even the old man said that he was also weak against Iron. But that did not mean that he couldn’t use his magick around it. The old man claimed that he could still use his magick though it would be limited. But again, he could only do it because he was a dream walker.

Now Ava knew that she couldn’t do that... yet. Yes. Talking to the Shaman and Baba had opened her eyes about the endless possibilities of magick, specifically her magick. Ava actually felt like a small fly talking to an elephant. This made her realize how arrogant she had been.

She was too confident because of her abilities. She thought she could fight against anyone and live.

But the things that happened in the past few days made her realize just how wrong she was.

For instance, the Werecheetah that she fought with was the prime example. She was lucky that the Shaman was around. If the old man wasn’t there, Ava would have been dead by now.

She was always so careless when it came to fighting and she almost always underestimated her enemies.

But this time, Ava carefully planned everything.

This time, she was going to get the attention of the Deputy Director and the higher officials.

The sound of the electronic door caught her attention. She immediately opened her eyes and looked at the woman who walked in.

Karena Spencer.

The woman was still wearing her brown turtleneck. Something that emphasized the woman’s green eyes. It wasn’t as green as Ava’s. It was lighter. With the white lights inside the room, Karena’s eyes looked almost gray.

Funny how the color of the eyes changed, based on the lighting.

"Please don’t be nervous, we are not going to hurt you." Karena said as she sat across Ava. She placed a coffee next to her and another one next to Ava. "I am hoping you still prefer it black?" Karena smiled.

"Why did you bring me here, Karena?" Ava asked.

"I think you already know that, V?"

Ava snorted. She casually reached out for the coffee. Seeing that she was still in handcuffs, Karena immediately used a key to remove Ava’s handcuffs.

"Sorry about that. Protocol."

"For extremely dangerous... witches." Ava smiled. "Thanks. That’s oddly uncomfortable." She massaged her wrist before she got her coffee.

"How have you been, V?"

"I don’t think you brought me here to ask me that," Ava answered.

"I tried calling you."

"I changed my phone number." Ava said.

"Right."

"So... what is it that you want to know?"

"A lot." Karena took a sip of her coffee. "You can drink the coffee... I didn’t put any potion on it."

"Not even a truth potion?" Ava lifted an eyebrow.

"No."

"Right. My hands are cold so... I wanted to touch something warm."

"The room is too cold? We can..."

"No." Ava said. "Maybe I have gotten used to the heat that the Lycans provide. I find it... cold when he is a bit far away from me."

"The Lycans." Karena sighed. "They are not your allies, V."

"Right."

"You know that they still treat witches as slaves, right?"

"I do."

"And? Why are you working with a Lycan?"

"You tell me." Ava smiled coldly. "I thought you already knew everything about me."

"V? This isn’t the time for sarcasm. Look... we have worked together in the past and I always liked you. I don’t want to make this any harder than it already is." ƒгeewёbnovel.com

Ava pursed her lips in response. Karena Spencer and she had worked together for two jobs in the past. The woman was a shifter. A weretiger. She was fast and reliable. Especially in killing people. However, Karena started working directly for the Deputy Director just two months before Ava went to Alaska.

"What happened in the building?" Karena asked.

"I walked in. I saw a bomb then I got out. Then the explosion happened."

"We didn’t see you leave V."

"At some point, I left." Ava said. "Or I wouldn’t be here... right?"

"Did you... cause the explosion?"

"No."

"Then who caused it?"

"I don’t know."

"Now that’s a lie." Karena smiled at her.

"Eh?" Ava snorted and stared at the mirror. "You have him with you?"

Karena responded with a smile. "We needed someone that could spot lies."

"Right."

"Then I would really appreciate it if you just cooperate from now on."

"Am I not cooperating?" Ava said as she slowly calmed her heart down. The man behind the mirror is someone that could spot the lies from the truth. He was very well known inside Trillium. Dr. Waterston.

Dr. Mike Waterston.

Ava leaned forward. "I told you. It wasn’t me."

"I believe you."

Ava glanced at the mirror again.

"And the one who caused the explosion... it’s the Lycans." Ava casually said. Then she leaned back and smiled. "Now... that is the fucking truth."

Karena stared at her for a few seconds.

"So... why would they try to kill you?"

"I don’t know."

"You are telling the truth."

"Do I have any other choice?" Ava said.

"We are not going to hurt you, V."

"Right."

Karena sighed. "So... the explosion. Why didn’t it hurt you?"

"What do you mean?"

"We have confirmed two dead witches. Their deaths were because of the dust from the explosion. They live nearby."

"I— I didn’t know that."

"So why are you still alive?"

Ava sighed. "I was mortally wounded."

"You were?"

"I— I don’t know what happened. All I know is that... Matthew Graydon saved me. So you see... I owe the man my life."
