Chapter 173: Air

The facility was located next to a cliff. Surrounded by magick, not many people would dare to venture into this part of the mountains. If they did, they would start to see fog and then would slowly lose their way. All supernatural beings were aware that humans would die inside this foggy area. And since this area was very cold, their bodies didn’t rot.

Matthew looked at the second body that he had seen tonight.

The stories in the town outside this place weren’t just stories. Everything was real.

Humans who would venture inside the fog died.

Unbeknownst to them, this was because the place was a facility where Trillium imprisoned their criminals underground.

Matthew just stood there for a few seconds. His senses were on high alert as his adrenaline spiked.

"Everyone’s in position..." a voice came from his earplugs.

"Stand by," he said.

Just as he finished speaking, he heard the sound of footsteps to his left. He turned around and waited.

Slowly, a silhouette appeared.

"Mr. Graydon..." It was a man with black sleek hair and a nervous expression plastered on his face. He stopped walking just a few meters away from Matthew. "I apologize for not being able to welcome you... I am Peter Miles, the head of the correction facility. May I know why you are here?"

"I needed the fresh air," Matthew answered.

"Sir?" Mr. Miles had a confused look on his face. He looked at the woman standing next to him then towards Dr. Mike Waterston who stood on his other side. "I— I don’t understand."

"The air is fresh... it’s cold. I like it."

"That— "

"Mr. Graydon, I am Mike Waterston."

"Ah..."

"I mean, this place is like a graveyard."

"I am well aware."

"So— "

"I like graveyards."

"That— "

Matthew narrowed his eyes. He knew that Ava wasn’t here. But for the sake of showing himself and fooling everyone, he needed to come here. Right now, Matthew knew exactly what he was going to do.

And that was to trust her.

"I want to see the bodies..."

"With all due respect Mr. Graydon, but this is the Trillium’s territory. Coming in here with... other Lycans is akin to declaring war against us."

"I am standing outside of your facility," Matthew said. "Are you going to tell me that Trillium is going to kill everyone who would stand outside of their building? So, Trillium is going to kill everyone who is breathing the air outside of their facility?"

"That— "

He wasn’t doing anything wrong. He was just standing there with all of his Lycans.

"Sir, the Lycans have..." Mr. Miles stopped talking when his eyes landed on the two people behind Matthew. "Sir, all shifters would cower in fear in front of a Lycan. I believe you are— "

"Lycans needed to breathe air Mr. Miles or are you saying that we don’t have the right to breathe in front of Trillium?"

"I didn’t say that."

"Then you should be more clear, Mr. Miles. We aren’t doing anything. Standing here isn’t a crime."

"But sir, you are well aware of the effects that you could give to other shifters." Dr. Waterston said.

"And how exactly is that my fault?"

"I—"

"Are you blaming me for your reaction?" Matthew snorted.

"Sir, I don’t mean any disrespect but this place is—"

"Oh, don’t worry. We are not planning to stay all night."

Again, everyone was rendered speechless because of Matthew’s words. However, most of the people guarding the place were shifters. Because of this, the guards and all shifters inside and outside of the prison could feel an invisible pressure that was weighing on them.

This was the pressure of a superior kind.

A Lycan.

Not just any Lycan.

"Sir, May I know why are you doing this?"Dr. Waterston asked. Just like all shifters, he felt like his throat dried up. His back was already drenched with sweat. "If you are here because of Miss Woods then..."

"You are thinking too much, Dr. Waterston."

"Then are you going to just stand in here and surround the facility?"

"I will leave once I am satisfied." Matthew looked at the moon. "The moon is nice tonight. It would be best to watch it with wine but since there is no wine... should I just settle for a sea of blood?"

"Mr. Graydon, what are you saying?"

"Oh... did you hear that?" Matthew smirked. "I didn’t realize that I said that out loud."

Dr. Waterston gulped his nonexistent saliva.

The thing was, this Lycan could kill everyone in here. This wasn’t the first time that he had met with a Lycan but this was his first time seeing a Royalty who was set to inherit the throne. Not many people were unlucky enough to meet one in their lives.

It was public knowledge that Lycans were arrogant and had the tendency to look down on everyone. In fact, the reason why not many shifters knew about them was because not many of them had ever lived to tell about it.

"Alright... Mr. Graydon doesn’t want to be disturbed. Please leave." The man next to Matthew spoke. This was none other than Marko Calida.

"But—"

"We will call you if we need your services."

"I—" Mr. Miles had a hard time answering. He nervously gulped and looked at Dr. Waterston. However, before Dr. Waterston could say a word, another voice interrupted them.

"Mr. Graydon..."

Everyone turned and looked at the smiling man who just called out Matthew.

"Kenji Moore... Deputy of the Operations Department." Kenji walked past Mr. Miles and stood in front of Matthew. "It’s nice to meet you."

"I can’t say the same thing... Deputy." Matthew said. There was no humor in his tone.

"I see..." Kenji continued smiling. "It looks like the rumors about a Lycan Prince and a witch were indeed true."

"Rumors?" Matthew lifted an eyebrow.

"It was said that a Lycan lost his mind and had been having an immoral relationship with a witch," Kenji said. "The rumor had a few covens concerned. After all, a witch and a Lycan can never be together."

"Ah..." Matthew pursed his lips. "That— wasn’t a rumor."

"Is that so?"

Matthew smirked. "Though... I don’t think that this would cause a lot of concern for the covens. I thought witches were only good at tricks. It turns out... they are good at talking about other people’s business too."

"They don’t usually do that."

"Of course. I am certain that those witches just like to kidnap people and experiment on them."

"Mr. Graydon, I advise you against saying something without proof."

"Without proof? Matthew snorted. "You seem so confident that I have no proof."

"Did you come here because of your witch?" Kenji changed the topic.

"Who knows?"

Kenji narrowed his eyes and took a step toward Matthew. "Mr. Graydon, do you think that everyone here is scared of you?"

Matthew said nothing.

"I know that Lycans are arrogant but to think that they would actually come here and wage a war..." Kenji said in a low voice. "Two things. It’s either they are foolish or they are too strong. In your case, I’d say it’s both. You are too strong and confident with your abilities. Yet at the same time, foolish."

Still, Matthew didn’t say another word.

"How could you let a witch entice you, Mr. Graydon?" Kenji said. "A romance between a witch and a Lycan can never happen. I believed you to be smart enough to know that. It turns out, you are just like the most of us. Flawed."

"Is that so?" Matthew asked.

"Not only this, but you also think that Trillium would give her back to you. After threatening us, did you really think that Trillium would sit down and let her roam around and do whatever it is that she wants?"

"Trillium? Or you?"

"Mr. Graydon... it seems like you don’t understand something. Trillium and I are one. I am Trillium."

"Kenji Moore, I think you have lost your mind. Once the other shifter would know about your experiments– "

"I don’t know what you are talking about." Kenji smiled. Their conversation stopped when Lucille, who stood next to her boss, handed a phone to Kenji. His elegant hands accepted the phone, then he smiled as he listened to the person on the other line.

"Ah... look at that. It seems that we just had an accident." Kenji said after he handed the phone back to Matthew. "I guess you heard the news as well?"

Matthew’s eyes turned golden at the man’s provocation. Because of his superior senses, he had heard what the other person on the phone said.

The man just informed Kenji that the logging company exploded.

"It looks like you are just wasting your time, Mr. Graydon," Kenji said. The same wicked smile was plastered on his face. "The woman that you are looking for is not in this place."

"You–" Matthew narrowed his eyes.

"She’s in another secure facility." Kenji smiled. "We placed her in the logging company thinking that it was the best place to keep her safe." Then he stopped smiling. "But it looks like the ’safe’ place just exploded."
