Soon, Ava realized that dealing against a Demon is definitely harder than what Damon told her. There was a reason why Damon couldn’t kill Josef and it was already too late when she found out that reason.
She blinked as she stood in front of a large hole. The smell of sulfur and smoke filled the air.
This was the Arena.
It looked like a hole but she couldn’t really see it because they actually built a structure around the place. But judging from the smoke that bellowed towards the skies, it is safe to assume that the Arena is structured like a hole.
She turned her attention toward the two people standing not far away from her.
"You finally showed yourself," Josef Asad smiled at her. He was still wearing the dark clothes that he wore earlier. As to why he was here? Ava guessed that this man must have directly teleported himself here. "I told you I will forgive you, didn’t I?"
Ava said nothing. She turned her gaze towards Alexandra who stood next to Josef. The woman looked serious and definitely guilty.
"You tampered with the poison," Ava uttered. "Is that why it didn’t work?"
Realization hit Ava when she saw Alexandra unharmed next to Josef.
The reason why it was too hard for Damon to kill Josef wasn’t just because Josef was a Demon. It was because one of Damon’s trusted subordinates was Josef’s spy.
Ava turned towards Josef. "And you— You already knew why I was there."
"I knew you were there to kill me." Josef nodded. "Though I thought I could change your mind."
"The wound— "
"It wasn’t fake," Josef uttered. "Do you really think I would not harm anyone who failed to kill an enemy?"
Ava blinked.
From the start.
This was all a game.
A damn game!
"Does... he know?" Ava turned towards Alex.
"Not yet," Alex beamed at her in response. "But he will know it very soon. If you refuse to go back... he will know it very soon."
"That would surely break his heart," Ava said, her voice cold. "But you don’t care about that, right?"
Alex only smiled. "You know... I should thank you."
"For what?"
"For saving me from that hell hole." ƒreeωebnovel.ƈom
Ava turned her attention towards Josef. Seeing the latter’s nonchalant smile, she turned her eyes back to Alex.
"So it was true," Ava said. "You stabbed that prince."
"Of course," Alex uttered. "Though I was supposed to frame Damon for the sin. I failed. So the lord captured me instead."
"And punished you." Ava reminded her.
"It was natural. Punishment for a mistake and a reward for something good. It was only a part of life."Alex uttered.
"He took advantage of you. He made Damon choose— "
"Pfftt..." Alex burst into laughter. "You don’t understand, Eve. I belong to my lord. He could do whatever he wants with my body. He could kill me or torture me. It wouldn’t make any difference."
Seeing the woman’s crazed look, Ava sighed.
This was honestly very surprising. However, she had to be calm and judge everything based on logic. She couldn’t let her emotion win!
"Where is he?" Ava asked.
"In his palace."
"So... he still thinks you are wounded."
"Obviously," Alex rolled her eyes.
"Now," Josef uttered. "You can obviously— "
"Why?" Ava asked. "Damon asked me to kill you but I never asked why. Why does he want to kill you?"
"Aside from the fact that I killed his mother?" Josef smiled. "I believe that must be because... he is my younger brother."
Ava blinked. For a few seconds, she wasn’t able to stop the surprise on her face.
What the hell?
Brothers trying to kill each other?
"If you are confused I can— "
"No need," Ava cut him off. "I know you are lying."
"Well, what did you expect, my dear?" Josef responded. "Demons lie."
"We should just kill Damon," Alex suggested. "I could— Ugh!" Alex’s words were cut off when Josef suddenly held her throat.
"You seemed to have forgotten who is standing next to you," Josef hissed. "Shut your mouth if you still want to keep your head connected to your body. He let her throat go and gave Ava a smile.
"Where were we?" he asked, almost innocently. It was as if he didn’t just strangle a woman who had been working for him.
This man....
"Ah, right. Damon. Honestly... I don’t want to waste my time talking about him. The only reason why he was alive is that he was useful. The moment his usefulness... ah... you already know what I mean." He nodded. "I shall not waste my word. Then shall we go back?"
When Ava said nothing, Josef started taking a step toward her. Then like a blur, he approached her faster than the wind.
Ava gasped but she steadied herself and a light blue fire suddenly appeared on her hand.
This made Josef stop.
"Hellfire?" Josef asked. "Did he give it to you? Or..." Josef narrowed at her. But he stopped approaching her which was Ava’s goal.
"Stay away from me."
"Hellfire doesn’t work on me," Josef said. "It could burn this body but not... ME." He made sure to emphasize the word me.
"But it works on me," Ava responded calmly. She smiled. "The fire doesn’t belong to me, Duke. Meaning, it would burn me!" Hellfires aren’t something that any magick could create. To be more specific, only demons and sometimes Daemons as well as those with demons’ essence could create them.
Obviously, Ava didn’t just create the fire. Damon gave it to her.
The man frowned. "Alex, remind me make that brother of mine suffer when we get back. That man must have poisoned Eve’s head."
Seeing the man distracted, Ava immediately teleported towards the entrance of the Arena. However, Josef was quick enough to hold her wrist. She let out a curse but didn’t stop the teleportation, dragging Josef towards the entrance.
"You are not going anywhere near that entrance!" Josef hissed, and a dangerous glint appeared on his now red eyes.
"Yes, I am!" Ava uttered. The fire on her hand grew bigger and before Josef knew it, the fire already covered Ava’s body.
"You— It would burn you!"
"Then I would rather burn than be with you."
Disbelief flashed in the man’s eyes. Of course, Ava took this opportunity to kick his shin and remove his hand from her wrist.
This time, she didn’t hesitate.
She darted towards the entrance and jumped towards the hole.
