Matthew jolted up. Beads of sweat trickled down his forehead. Getting up, he immediately doused his face with cold water in his bathroom. Then he stared at his reflection.
Something was not right.
His heart thudded loudly against his chest, his senses alert.
This wasn’t the first time that he woke up in the middle of the night with only Ava inside his head.
What could have happened?
He frowned and used a towel to wipe his face. Then he walked out of the bathroom and poured himself a glass of whiskey.
He missed her.
After a while, he dialed Baba’s number and asked her to come to his room.
Luckily, he was able to contact her this time. Baba would usually turn off her phone especially if she was not in the castle.
"What is it?" Baba was wearing her long black robe. She looked like she hadn’t had any sleep for a few days now. "I assume you are calling me for something important?"
"Where is she?"
"Pardon?"
"Ava, where is she?"
"I thought you were aware of her current location," Baba said without an iota of expression on her face. Seeing the whiskey in Matthew’s hand, she also approached the bar and poured herself her own drink.
"The Shaman... is with her. I know that. But I want to know where is she."
"And you just assumed that I would know?"
"Yes."
Baba took a sip of her drink. "She’s not in this dimension."
That attracted Matthew’s attention. He lifted an eyebrow before he finished his whiskey. Then he asked, "Where?" freёweɓnovel_com
"In the Pits."
Matthew pursed his lips and for a long time, he was silent.
"I want to go— "
"You cannot," Baba interrupted him.
"Why?"
"I know you are aware of the Pits. It’s not a place for Lycans."
Lycans are the mortal enemies of demons and daemons. Matthew had read about that place in the past. Not many Lycans would actually visit that place as they would be immediately hunted by demons and daemons as well as the humans who received an essence from demons. In fact, he had never heard of a Lycan who survived that place and was able to come out alive.
"What is wrong?" Baba asked. "The other day, you were so insistent that Ava is still your Ava no matter what happened. I can sense your worry, Matthew. Tell me about your concern."
Matthew said nothing. Instead, he poured a second glass of whiskey and finished it in one go.
"What is it?"
"I have been ... I couldn’t sleep."
Baba scowled. "Did you perhaps call me here because you are going to talk about how much you missed her?"
"No."
"Good. Because if you are, I wouldn’t be able to give you any help."
"I want to talk to the Shaman."
"I can’t let you that."
"Why?"
"Please, you know why."
"We can teleport and— "
"They are going to sense it and assume that you are working with those rebels. Your father and brother are looking for a way to frame you. Are you really going to risk it just because... you missed her?"
Matthew frowned.
"Well then... since this is your only concern, I am leaving. I have more important matters to attend to."
Baba started walking towards Matthew’s door when suddenly she heard a loud thud behind her. She turned and almost immediately her nonchalant expression changed. The glass fell from Matthew’s hand. It made a loud thud as it hit the carpeted floor.
"Matthew?"
"I— " Matthew’s breathing was shallow and fast as he held his chest. His eyes were gold and the large veins that appeared on his face were prominent despite the low lighting.
Baba immediately approached Matthew. She used her palm to check Matthew’s temperature.
"You are— burning!" She immediately assisted him back to his bed and perform some magick that would cool him down.
"What is going on?" Matthew asked, his face was red, and his eyes had already turned dark gold.
"I— I don’t know. Are you in heat?"
"Impossible."That only happens to lycans or werewolves who haven’t marked their mates yet. Plus, this isn’t very common as all of their blood isn’t as pure as the previous generation of Lycans.
In the past, Matthew only experienced it once and it wasn’t this... extreme. It didn’t take away his strength and made him feel as if... there was a hot fire inside his body.
"Then..." Again, Baba examined his temperature. She mumbled some Latin words. "I will put you to sleep. I am going to find out what is happening to you." Of course, Baba already took into consideration that this must be because Matthew had been away from his mate. A Lycan and a witch. A very unique pairing. However, one needed to understand that despite their uniqueness they are still mates.
She couldn’t help but curse.
She already thought about this before this temporary separation. However, she didn’t inform both Ava and Matthew about it as she wasn’t so sure. Normal Lycans or Werewolves wouldn’t be comfortable if they are away from their mates for a few days. Baba thought that this wouldn’t apply to Ava and Matthew as Ava wasn’t a Lycan or a werewolf.
Seeing Matthew slowly close his eyes, she chanted a protection spell that would stop anyone from coming inside Matthew’s room. Then she vanished.
The next time she appeared she was already inside her own room which was just across from Matthew’s room. She used her magick to lift the carpet, revealing a large magick circle that she had carved underneath it.
Then she started chanting a spell.
The edges of the circle slowly lit up. Seeing this, she moved to the middle of the circle and soon vanished.
The next time she appeared she was already standing across an old wooden house. She blinked and looked at the light on the second floor. On the outside, the house looked abandoned. It had been concealed. But how could this simple concealment escape her eyes?
She started walking towards the house.
....
Shaman Gaas was not in a good mood.
It has been a few days since he had lost contact with Ava.
He stared at the candle that contained Ava’s soul imprint. This would show him if Ava was in danger or worse... dead.
The candle was burning brightly. In fact, it had gotten brighter since Ava had put her imprint on it. This means that she had gotten more powerful and that she was able to control her abilities better before she left this place.
But the Shaman hadn’t heard from her for a few days and this... this isn’t like the normal Ava.
Even though it was tiring, Ava almost always talked to him every day, giving him her reports about what she had discovered inside.
"Hm?" Shaman Gaas looked out of the window when he sensed someone out of his door. He vanished and appeared next to the main door. He opened it and looked at the flustered Baba.
"Why are you here?" he asked.
"Aren’t you going to invite me in?" she asked.
"No."
"How arrogant. Don’t forget, I am still her teacher."
"Please... you haven’t taught her anything." Shaman Gaas lifted his chin, arrogantly.
"You arrogant bastard. I have some important matters to attend to. We need to talk."
"Important matters? Was it the end of the world?"
"No."
"Then I am not in the mood to— "
"I think Matthew is suffering because he had been away from her," Baba said. Judging from the Shaman’s personality, there is no way that he wouldn’t extend this conversation until he gets bored with her response.
"Ava isn’t suffering," the Shaman said.
"But her mate is."
"Her mate... is not my student."
"You— " Baba squinted. "Alright... " she calmed herself down and added, "What would your apprentice feel if she discover that you didn’t help her mate? Are you certain she wouldn’t hate you?"
Hearing this, the Shaman scowled at her. Then he moved to the side.
"Thank you..."
Walking inside, Baba immediately noticed the array of candles that were around the house.
"What kind of— Why would you put this protection spell inside your house?" she couldn’t help but ask. "Are you protecting yourself from a nuclear bomb?" actually, the candle was just like a large magick circle that was meant to protect you.
"There is nothing wrong in sleeping soundly every night."
"How paranoid."
"I wouldn’t want to sleep with a gun under my pillow." Sarcasm coated the old man’s voice. "Well then, are you going to tell me what was happening?"
"Matthew is sick."
"Lycans don’t get sick."
"I know. I also happen to know that he had been having nightmares. He couldn’t sleep."
The old man squinted at her. "If he wanted to be King, he should prepare himself for more sleepless nights. Why was he complaining about this? He wasn’t even King yet."
"No. This is different. I believe this is because of Ava." Baba pursed her lips. "Is she... did something happen to her inside the Pits?"
