"Are you sure you aren’t going to go? This is the third invitation that you received from that person."
"No." Ava shook her head and stared at the knight. "Why would they invite an enemy into their lair?" she asked.
"Perhaps, they wanted to offer you the plaque to leave this place?"
"They can do that?" She lifted an eyebrow. They are currently walking towards the place where she would claim her prize.
"Yes, they can."
"Why?" Of course, Ava already knew the answer to her own question. The knight already said that some people in here didn’t actually want to go home. They just felt that this place was pretty peaceful. They could stay on the floors and be treated as a king. They get to have their own place, a safe place that cannot be accessed by their enemies.
If their enemies have the guts to fight them then they needed to climb to the floor on their own. They cannot fight in groups and would have no choice but to only use their abilities. And since only the strong survive inside the Arena, many of these people would perish even before they reach the fifty-first floor and fight against someone who is not considered a monster.
"Many of them wanted to stay here," the knight answered. "And they would like to keep the rankings. The strong ones thrive in this place. I could not blame them."
"What would happen if I decline the invitation?" she asked.
"None. But three invitations..." the knight looked at her. "It’s rare. They must have wanted a deal."
"Then I will consider it." Ava couldn’t help but wonder what kind of deal are they going to offer. "Hm?" Ava lifted an eyebrow as her senses turned alert. She could sense magick around her. She looked at the knight and just as expected, he was walking as if everything was normal. She silently wrapped a thin magick around her. Like an invisible armor.
"Hey... could they attack me outside of the tower?"
"No. The floor masters cannot do that. But their lackeys can." The knight must have realized something as he squinted at the road in front of them. "Did— Ugh!"
Ava calmly looked at the knife that suddenly impaled the knight’s forehead. She didn’t even see it coming. The knight is dead.
"You know," Ava said calmly. She had expected since she started defeating people from each floor. Because of what she did, the rankings had been changing. Many people who were around the fortieth floor are now on the fiftieth.
This must have been causing some issues for the people on top.
"I actually like that knight," she said in a low voice. "The man was pretty knowledgeable." The man even introduce the concept of betting and now, she had been winning every time she bet on herself. Her body had tripled because of her betting.
Silence responded to her.
But it didn’t take too long for the assassins to show some movements.
A breeze hit her cheeks then a sharp blade-like icicle almost hit her cheek. She was lucky, she was able to move and avoid it on time. If not, that ice could have ruined her face.
Ava pursed her lips. She increased the magick that surrounded her. At least, this time, she was sure that at least one of the attackers is a witch.
Ava closed her eyes and soon, she sensed the fireballs coming her way. This time, she took advantage of the fireball and created an even bigger fireball to counter the attack, creating an even bigger explosion.
**BANG!**
**BANG!**
**BANG!**
Magick bullets came from her left.
Are they all witches?
Ava didn’t move as the bullets hit her shield. She knew that people were surrounding her but for some reason, she couldn’t pinpoint their location. The assassins must be using some sort of magick that could avoid detection.
Should she play with them? She thought inwardly. It would be good to actually tire them out so it’s easier for her to beat them without killing them. Knowing the people who sent them would be useful.
But before she could make up her mind, a body was dumped in front of her.
**THUD**
**THUD**
**THUD**
**THUD**
**THUD**
Five bodies.
She frowned, an ominous feeling rose from her chest.
"They are dead," a man’s voice came from behind her. "You are too slow."
"Who are you?" she stared at the man’s eyes, most of his face was hidden under a mask. Even his hair was covered by a black hood. The outfit actually reminded her of a ninja’s outfit. The daggers on his belt and legs made the look complete. All she could see were his piercing blue eyes that looked unreal. How could someone’s eyes be so... blue?
"Next time you don’t have to hesitate. Just kill them." The man ignored her question as he approached and started examining their bodies. "Assassins from the sixtieth floor."
"I was planning to keep them alive," Ava said. And interrogate them, she wanted to say. But she ended up keeping those words inside her.
"Reasons," he didn’t hide the sarcasm in his voice.
Ava frowned. What the hell? But she didn’t sense any killing intent from the man.
"Since you already took care of them, there is no need for me to be here. I’m leaving first."
"Wait," the man got up and toss her another coin. "I am officially inviting you."
She looked at the coin.
"Ninety-ninth floor?" she asked. But when she lifted her head, the man already vanished.
She scowled and the coin vanished from her hand.
Ninety-ninth floor....
She looked at the now dead knight and waved her hand. Almost immediately all the bodies, including the knight’s disappeared. Then she went towards the hall for her rewards and made sure to give them everyone’s body. Of course, she told them the truth including the man wearing a mask. There is no point in protecting that man’s identity.
To her surprise, the man who entertained her just said nothing. In the end, Ava concluded that these things must be considered normal in this place. When she got out of the hall, another knight was already waiting for her.
"Shall I take you to the next floor?" he asked.
"No. I wanted to go to a higher floor."
The middle-aged man stared at her before he nodded. "What floor?"
"Ninety-nine," Ava said. ƒreeωebnovel.ƈom
